Title: NON POKER: Is this a scam? Post by: I KNOW IT on October 07, 2005, 11:18:27 PM Earlier this evening I had a phonecall telling me my mobile phone contract was up for renewell and this company
(not existing Co I use) would like to offer me a better deal. Firstly they asked how much my bill is at the moment, then they give me a figure which is half of present, they give me xtra 200 mins a month, free latest mobile worth £300+, free texts (forgot how many) . So of cause im intrested , who wouldnt be. They ask for name, adress and proffession, then comes the worrying part. Bank sort no. plus acc number. I tell them there is no way im giving that to someone who has cold called me on my mobile, but send me a direct debit mandate in the post and Ill be wiiling to oblige He then tells me there is nothing to worry about as its only for the direct debit and they wouldnt be able to to do anything with out my authority. I repeat that there no way im giving that info over the phone , but ill join if you send it in the post. At that point he said he wouldnt be able to offer the deal then and he hung up. I know it sounds dodgy or is that the way these good mobile offers are done appreciate any input for future ref Craig Title: Re: NON POKER: Is this a scam? That is just a scam posing as a phone deal!! Ty for the warning m8. Title: Re: NON POKER: Is this a scam? Post by: Ginger on October 07, 2005, 11:56:51 PM Sry, but I don't see the problem. I have taken out 3 contract this way over the last several years, and those details are no different to the details that are on a cheque, and we all hand those out on a daily basis without even thinking about it. Now, if they asked for your card number (the long one across the middle) I may be a little hesitant, as this would NOT be needed to set up the mandate.
TBH, you can get some REALLY cracking deals this way. Another tip, last time as I had not heard of the company b4, I asked for the website URL, then you can look them up whilst still on the phone!
