Title: Re: For Sark and other penquin lovers Post by: tikay on May 11, 2007, 05:48:28 PM I believe that an Albatross, usually a Southern Hemishphere bird, has been living up on one of the Scottish Islands, maybe the Shetlands, or Orkney, for some years now. Evidently it got "lost" 20 or 30 years ago, & still lives there. They live to a great age, I'm told.

I heard that yesterday tikay on Radio 5, did you hear the report as well? It was a sad story to hear he has been on his own for close to 40 years I was out with my dogs the other day in Failford ( nice little place on the banks of the River Ayr ). I normally feed the Mallards old bread that I store up that I haven't eaten. Mallards are lovely birds and my favorite of the duck family. Anyway, I was feeding small chunks of bread to a group of four male Mallards and was just about to leave as my dog was growing impatient sitting around waiting on me feeding the ducks. Just as I was walking away a female Mallard with 7 chicks arrived on the scene looking for bread. Immediately all four male Mallards attacked the young chicks and took off after the female Mallard. I know this is normal behaviour in many wild animals to kill off rival young and try to mate with the female, but I always believed Mallards were peaceful birds. I still feel guilty that as I was feeding the males, this attracted the female to come and get food.
