Title: O/T: Nortons Internet/Anti Virus
Post by: jjandellis on May 13, 2007, 08:01:48 AM
Bit of advice please!

I have 2 computers - laptop and standalone. I bought them seperatley a coupe of years ago. They both came with Nortons Internet/Anti Virus, but boh ahve since had their subscriptions expire.

What is the best/cheapest way to get these upgraded to the current edition?

If I went into the shop/bought over internet would I need to 2 seperate packages (as I'm aware they're serialised) and thus have 2 pay 2 lots of x quid? Or, would it be best to just upgrade both online? (and agin would I ave to pay 2 seperate fees)

The reason I ask is because I have gotten infuriated with my research (a. endless Norton helpline and even worse b. spotty geek at pc world that i suspected was trying to fill me with sh*t!)

All help for this computer dinosaur is greatly appreciated (to think I was ahead of my time once upon a time, programming Commodore 64's as a 7yo!!!!!!)

If you had 3 computers its a no brainer as Norton do a 3 user license package for Internet Security 2007 (see amazon etc).

Personally I would ditch Norton and use something for free or at least alot cheaper. I use AVG software for anti virus and anti spyware with exceptional results.

Your PC will run better WITHOUT norton!! (and probably be just as safe lol)

I use Kaspersky

Is McAfee any good?

It came with my PC and now it's moaning that it wants renewed. :(

I would recommend AVG and it is free, the link below has a number of reviews of the software.

From 2 of the most intelligent men about computers in the world, nem and bongo, i was told to get rid of the piece of shit that is norton and get NOD32, it is regarded as the best in the world and as far as im concerned its faultless.

NOD32!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nod32 is great - just leave it to do it's job, runs fast, great detection rate etc etc.

Kapersky is also meant to be good, i've not tried it myself.

Is NOD32 just an Anti-Virus/Spyware package?  The website seems to suggest so.

I went for Kaspersky in the end as it was more of an all-round security suite, similar to the Norton one I was replacing.  Does NOD32 do thinks like anti-spam and anti-hack protection?

I think at the time I compromised some anti-virus protection (NOD32 appears to be superior in this respect) for more 'all-round' functionality, but I might be mistaken in assuming that NOD32 doesn't offer this.

NOD32!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

do they have computers in wales now?

I agree, norton is crap, PC becomes almost unuseable. AVG is pretty good, known to miss a few things though. I use Yahoo toolbar antispy and Google SheepPorn blocker for the welsh sites.

Ok I've now got NOD32

I now have a problem with it. It had detected a threat, but no matter what I do ie delete/copy to quarantine etc the threat box keeps coming back up straight away. It says it will delete the file at next restart but this does not happen and the threat box pops up again. Its a windows file it has a problem with, so I guess  my PC will now allow it to delete it, Any suggestions?

I'd try turning off system restore (this contains files that cannot be deleted by AV software) and reboot.
You can turn it back on afterwards.

START>RUN type msconfig and hit the system restore button, click on settings and "turn off system restore", do your scan then reboot.

Ifms suggestion didn't work. The threat is

File-C:\WINDOWS\Fonts/docweb.dll

Threat-Win32/Adware.Virtumonde.L application

Have you ensured it is up to date?

Have you run it in safemode?

Touch busy right now, but i'll have a look for more tomorrow.

Makes you wonder how long it's been on your system without Norton finding it though...

Title: Re: O/T: Nortons Internet/Anti Virus

ta for that. Its was up to date and not sure how to run it in safe mode .

it must be already running if that program won't remove it, as Bongo says run it in safemode.

START>RUN type "msconfig" and press enter, on the "BOOT.INI" tab tick the box next to "SAFEBOOT" click ok and ok again to reboot into safemode, run the exe file again and reboot normally.

I've restarted in safe mode but can't access the computer now. All I have is a black screen with safe mode in each corner. How do I get in to use it?

failing that if you can just tell me how to get it out of safe mode that would be great. I may have to reconsider NOD32 if I cant get it sorted.

Cont-Alt-Delete.
Select file tab, then New Task (run) Select browse - choose VundoFix.exe (or what ever it was called)and run the program

It isn't NOD32 mate, that has merely spotted a trojan that norton missed.

Have now managed to run the symantec program in safe mode, but it is not detecting the virus that nod32 says is still present but won't remove.

Title: Re: O/T: Nortons Internet/Anti Virus

Yes it just wouldn't shift. I have now managed to get rid of it but I had to download and pay for another antivirus package (spyware doctor), this also picked up and shifted an few other viruses that NOD32 missed aswell.

Spyware isn't the same as a virus...

Norton missed them all too - and that's meant to find spyware!

Title: Re: O/T: Nortons Internet/Anti Virus

im such an idiot, as soon as you say you have fixed it i remeber a site you should have gone to but its only for spyware not viruses. Should go to hijackthis.com and run a full system scan if you think you have malware/spyware embedded. At least you can bookmark it for next time lol.

Norton is famous for being difficult to get rid of, there was a whole side industry at one time selling products to remove the crap they put on your computer.
I have seen articles that say norton can slow your computer down by as much as 30%, i myself cut the bootup time on an old computer of mine by 8 minutes!!!!
Anyway there are some tools for removing Norton please read all the documentation before trying this or any other third party application because i don't know if it applies directly to your product.
