What about a bigger club though? Like West Ham? ;)

Quality player.

He seems to be a quality player and has said that he is happy at spurs for now. Spurs have said he is not for sale but i seem to remember the same noises coming from Shite hart lane last year about Carrick.

I think Spurs need to keep hold of him if they want to try and break into the top 4 although I also think they need to get about 4 or 5 top quality players aswell. I think this will be hard for them,as although they always seem to have and spend alot of money, with Chelsea buying anything that moves and the money that Liverpool will have next year and Man Utd have always had getting high quality players wont be easy. Even the likes of West Ham, Villa and Man City (if they get taken over) will be splashing the cash about.

it seems these days that unless you have a foreign investor ploughing money into your club like its going out of fashion its going to be hard to compete.

Called "shrewd negotiations". Berbatov has 4 years left on his contract, Carrick only had 2. In 2 years time, Berbatov will still be at WHL and if we are not challenging top 4, then he will be off (he may be sold before then, but only if the club receive a bid in excess of £60million).

As for "you need money to compete" and "you need a foregin sugar daddy" Spurs have spent the 2nd highest amount of money on transfers in the last 3 years and we also have the 2nd richest benefactor in the league, in Joe Lewis.

More importantly however, we have a true fan as our Chairman, the best centre half in the league and we also have the best striker behind Henry

I beleive, as a complete netural, that times ahead are bright for Spurs

Keep Berbatov for a year, Dawson is excellent, Huddlestone is a potential star

Strengthen at left back particularly and more depth up front/central midfield and with a bit of luck in a years time Berbatov will want to stay

Really enjoy watching the lad play, guv.

Decent assessment from a neutral.
Yet to see the best of Lennon, too.

Decent side but I seriously can't see them breaking into the top 4 next year. Or the year after.

Only 8 points short this season.
And the season before.... but for deliberate food poisoning.....

I can only agree.

As long as they don't fall into the trap of always reducing their squad's average age they'll be a good side in the next year or two.

Even Jenarse is getting better.

SWP is better than Lennon. SWP has only been a failure at Chelsea due to lack of games. The season before he left for Chelscum, he was the best English RM and I still feel that is the case.

I don't get the SWP critics.

Other than his choice of club he hasn't done a lot wrong from when he was the most exciting young English prospect about.

I agree wuth Tighty's assesement.

I think Spurs have the potential to be a top 4 club.

Seems clear where Spurs have to improve if they are to really challenge for the top 4 next season and it's not up front!

Despite having what looks on paper a solid defence amazingly they kept the fewest clean sheets in the whole premiership this season and only the bottom six teams conceded more goals.   :dontask:

Must be a question mark over defensive organisation then and also maybe the lack of a Makele ( or maybe a Carrick  ;whistle; ) type player in front of the defence?

But unquestionably Berbatov has been fantastic, especially for a first season import.

They have been without Ledley King for the majority of the season, and the loss of him is equivalent to Terry, Ferdinand or Carragher missing out for thier respective clubs.

Title: Re: Berbatov

Spurs need to sign two left-sided players. Midfield and Full-Back. I expect Berbatov to stay another year during which we must make top 4, im[posiible in my view, or bye-bye. Lennon has forgotten how to go past players and is a dangerous liability when trying to defend as a wing-back which puts too much pressure on Chimbonda.  Jenas and Malbranque are not good enough and spend too much time on the ball. We missed King and surprisingly, for me, Dawson is a  better player when King is out. maybe he enjoys the responsibility. Defoe is a waste of space and is clearly an unsettling influence on the team.

We are still evolving as a team and I believe that under Jol we have a good a chance as any as maintaining our current position of "best of the rest". Until there are fundamental changes to the  way football is run and financed it is virtually impossible for any team to break into the top 4. It is reasonable to expect at least an ocassional foray by a "lesser" side into the Champions League, but the qualification process is designed to favour those teams who have historically done well and prohibit any progress by an "upstart".  If you believe anything else you are foolish in the extreme.

I'll get me coat
