Title: tech help required
Post by: amcgrath1uk on May 14, 2007, 10:59:12 PM
Hi all

I'm having pretty serious connection problems, and I'm TOTALLY stuck

I am on Virgin/NTL and use a Belkin 54g wireless router as I have been for 2 years, through my laptops internal wireless card

In the last couple of days my wireless connection drops from 54Mb right down to 1Mb, and eventually all the way up again. sometimes my poker stays ok, and it drops the rest of my net connection inc msn, other times msn is fine and everything else drops.

i've run full checks on my system ( virus/spyware etc), have had my line and my router fully checked out, rebooted, restarted and reinstalled. I've also changed the channel several times.

I'm now at a total loss, anyone have any suggestions?

Bought anything electrical lately?
Cordless phones, new tv etc.?
If not most likely culprit is either router or lappy wireless card, try connecting via cable (they look like a modem plug but slightly larger, if that's the same then it's probably time for a new router.
If you have another try it or try yours on someone elses connection or even try someone elses lappy in your house.
Failing that buy one and return it if it doesn't solve the problem :)

Thanks for the quick reply

Checked everything you've suggested...  ( 3 laptops and 3 routers and counting) and nothing new I'm aware of

HOWEVER as is always the case Virgin/NTL dont know what one part of it is doing, when the other part does is

FINALLY got onto their website and apparantly they are overhauling their internet services this week. LOVELY of them to let their customers know as well as LOVELY of their call centre to not have a clue!

Internet works by them shouldn't affect your wireless connection speed - that is purely the connection between your computer and your wireless station.

You could try down loading a program called net stumbler which will allow you to investigate your wireless network and any others locally.

You could also change the wireless channel it broadcasts on... this may stop any interference that maybe causing the problems. This is done via the setup page on your router.. usually on the same bit where you change the SSID (wireless broadcast name)

As Bongo says, it's nothing to do with your internet connection - it's your laptop's connection to the router. If you've tried different channels without success, that rules out interference with other networks. You've tried different routers, and different laptops, all to no avail.

It seems to me you've individually ruled out every piece of hardware. Have the different routers you've tried been different makes or all the same model?

The only other thing I could think of would be the location - you are using the laptop in different locations in your house, and not from the same place the whole time, aren't you?

I had an issue with a power supply once that effected the power of my wireless router, I replaced it with a one from Maplins and it solved the issue.

Check on he Belikin forums etc

Thanks for the replies all

The truly annoying thing is I've been online since midday without so much of a hint of a problem.  And THIS is why I'm stumped when it does go down

Does it mainly happen in the evenings?

sounds like it could be interference...
