Title: Help Im a beginner
Post by: SKIPPYSKIP on October 09, 2005, 02:59:09 PM
Im going to my local casino this evening to play in a comp and just to experience the atmosphere of playing against opponents face to face rather than on the internet games.

Silluy question but what signals or calls do i give to fold, call, raise, check, all in with out it looking to blatant that i am a total novice.

thank you in advance

Shouldn't be a problem, m8.

IF you have any trouble, just take your time and ask the dealer. It was everyone's first time at one point.

Just push your cards forward and let the dealer take them if you want to fold.

For the others, you can't go far wrong if you simply announce. Make a verbal action before you do anything and no one will be able to complain.

1 mistake that novices often make is that they forget they're on the big blind and pass when the action reaches them instead of checking and seeing the free flop.

Hope that helps.

Welcome to Blonde by the way.

Just say fold, call, raise, check or all in clearly. Dont worry about working out bets - thats what the dealers are there for. When you want to bet say either the amount you wish to raise or say "pot"  and the dealer will tell you how much that is.

Dont worry about making the occassional mistake with chips - there are plenty of us out there who still do now :)

Just take your time and most of all enjoy it........

p.s. keep your cards guarded at all times (use either a card protector or a chip) otherwise if its your turn to speak and you are not watching the dealer will muck your cards without asking

Matt when you say keep your cards guarded you means under my control right???

Yes. Just stick a chip on them to protect them. You don't want the dealer to assume you are passing and take your cards.

Skip, just accept the fact that you will be nervous, we all were, don't let them rush you, ask if you don't know something and enjoy it, they cant kill you (unless you go to Annabelles in Coventry)

Good Luck

Matt when you say keep your cards guarded you means under my control right???

yes - you dont have to sit there gripping them tightly but just keep something on top of them at all times. as soon as i receive my cards mystic monkey (my card protector) sits on them straight away, then when it is my turn to speak i will look at my hand and decide whether i am going to play or not. if i am then mystic monkey goes back on top of them otherwise i pass them to the dealer.

try not to get into the habit of protecting your cards only when you are going to play in the pot, otherwise other players at the table can soon work out whether you are going to play or pass.

First time i played live, I'm UTG but think that the person to my right is so of course I'm sitting there for a couple of minutes thinking Man this guys taking a long time to act, and I noticing a few people looking at me and I'm thinking come on mate hurry up, then everyone starts laughing and I'm thinking what are they laughing at... Oh no is it my turn? Now every time the cards are being dealt I tell myself what position I'm in.

The +2 is the charge the house take. You pay £22 then £20 for every rebuy.

I think I would have been happy with the 14000+ in the pot when it reached you. I actually liked your river bet...only problem is anyone with a "big" diamond will call. I was surprised your foe called with 9 of diamonds >:(

not mentioned yet but when you want to check you can just tap the table with you hand. You will see others doing it straight away. Still it's always best to declare verbally as well.

Whats that skip, Theres someone trapped down a mine?

Title: Re: Help Im a beginner

Yeah there is enough in this pot pre flop to put in a raise. If you get 1 caller then you can push on the flop, and if they call, so be it.

Yes, minimum bets don't scare people off I'm afraid, especially in a freeroll. Prolly best betting pot say 14-15k on flop to get the weak hands out.

"what's that skip? Jim's had an accident and is trapped in his car?"

skip, I found I did something when I first went to play live in a casino...I attached a little yellow post it note to my forehead that said "I never slow play aces", that way whenever I had a lot of limpers (people who just call pre flop, not raising) and I picked up a hand in the blinds, I raised the heck out of it and everyone folded. Soon it got to the stage where, by not overdoing the tactic, I could look down at  9s 2d in the big blind and really raise it if everyone just limped into the pot. I came to call this a "limpers tax". If they are not prepared to raise pre flop, and then you raise out of the blinds, the chances are most will fold.

Of course, poker being the tricky game it is, if one calls, the rest get priced in and then you are playing  9s 2d against six people having represented a big hand, an  ac comes on the flop, you are forced to bet it to represent your big hand and the people witrh the other three  ad ah asp call and suddenly you are in a massive pot with no outs and you have three options

a) fold, after a long delay to make it look like you've got a really tough decsion
b) go all in quickly, with a swagger and a "i don't give a monkey's I've got you beat" look. For me, this has added effect if  I imagine I am playing against my ex-wife's divorce lawyer
c) call, and then lose all your chips, stopping by the roulette/blackjack table on your way out, where you will reallllllly be in the mood to play sensibly

Of course, this is not serious but there is a moral to the story...don't limp with aces in a multi way pot

you are 88% favorite against any other hand with Aces pre flop, but your odds decrease for every extra player you have in the pot

sermon over, welcome to blonde  :)up

Interesting point about protecting you cards was underlined today with an incident at Notts in the £30 freezeout today. About 5 hands in a player limps UTG and then is raised to 300 (blinds 25/50) from a mid position player next to the dealer. It is folded back to the under the gun who calls. At this point the dealer accidentally mucks the cards of the raisor, he had them in front of him but no chip or protector on them. The floor is called and the rule in notts is that if the player can recall the cards and SUITS, the floor can retrieve them from the muck and the hand continues. Unfortunately raisor guesses wrong at the suits of the cards which as you may have guessed were aces (two red ones ironically, he said they were black?!). Then the under the gun turns over slowplayed kings. That has got to hurt. Hence the saying always protect your cards.
