Title: You all suck!
Post by: da_poker_monkey on May 17, 2007, 01:20:10 AM
Am I the only pearon in the Poker playing world who gets sucked in by the Casino games whilst waiting for Poker games to start etc?  I love Poker any play live as much as I can but I always seem to do my cash playing s**tty casino games before/during tourney breaks.  I know this is the dummest thing a poker player can do but surely I am not alone in doing this?  No offence is intended by the title of this thread, It is a genuine plea for advice.  How do sensible ppl approach this problem?
Again I find myself sat at home having lost playing roulette without ever intending to play the stupid game in the first place!  Do people listen to music, talk to friends in the bar, sit in the toilet wasting time, not enter the casino till the last minute or just excersize more will power that the average Joe?  Any advice regarding this problem would be great!  Posts from sensible ppl will be taken with a pinch of salt, I want to know what the idiots like myself do to avoid the Casino trap.

I would have the same sort of problems. Go with a mate, make sure you get a drink each, sit down somewhere away from the tables and chat about anything. Sounds simple enough. Try turning up with just enough time to join the poker and leave afterwards. Take a set amount of money. Anything

Work out the odds that you are receiving on the house games, works for me.

If im with my mate its easy, if im not with my mate i arrive quite late to register then get a drink and sit down and read the poker mags the casino put on. I would say i have more of a fascination watching the other people playing them than actually donking my own money off on them!

I think I might try watching the cash games if I turn up early, maybe this will help.  It's just that with another 2 Casinos and another 2 card rooms opening in Nottingham in the next few months that I fear for my financial future!  I was praying that DTD would open ASAP but now it looks like I will be busto before this happens  ;reallyamsorry;

I usually play blackjack while waiting to be called to the table and quite a few other poker players will be at the table. What surprises me is just how bad a lot of these guys play..... lets face it if you can play decent poker you can play perfect blackjack and at least cut the house edge to a minimum.

Oh and I avoid roulette at all costs....... well unless I've been drinking  ::)

to be honest i am so addicted to poker that the odds are fused in my head.
therefore, when i stand beside some roullette wheel or blackjock table i think immediately of the odds of winning against the house odds of winning and it's QJ v AK every time, so I fold. It would be very very difficult for me to partake in these games, and for that I feel blessed. I think in a civilization like our own, casino games should be banned, it is just the legitimization of a way to fleece people. Anyone who compares texas holdem to this sort of sh*t gambling needs their head checked.

so what do I do instead? I talk to the poker players I'm about to play in the tournament with. Normally they're nice people but also about 49 x the intelligence of your average member of the population, people tend to forget that.

85 pc of poker players are losing players but at least you go in with some chance of winning. losing bad at poker you will lose worse than against the wheel, but at least with poker you were safe in the knowledge that if you put your grey matter in gear you would come up smelling of roses. no matter what you do against bj or a wheel, you will lose. there is no dignity in that.
in reality, i know what you're saying though james

i dont gamble on any fruit machine and certainly wont in a casino

when i was a kid i was addicted to teh fruit machine in the chipshop but after i worked out how much i lost in the machine i stopped playing them

i used to put on 10p yankees with the horses but nowadays i am never up in time to get to the bookies
i will make small bets on betfair but normally i trade off for a a profit of 1 or 2 quid

but my rule is no gambling in casinos or pubs other than poker
when my friends play the fruit machines in the pub i refuse to watch

when your in the casino the easy thing to do is go to the bar and start talking to someone
preferably a poker player not a gambler even if you dont know them you have something in common
even if you dont like them the thing is talk to someone and you wont have time to gamble
during a break goto the toilet wash face come back and talk to someone that you met during the game
bore them with the talk of a hand you played together or about who you think is the better player russel anderson or john terry

but talk soon you wont have time to play the roulette as you will get called back
afyer you bust sit in the bar and soon you will find other muppets like me that have busted out
and have a few hours to spare and talk about the weather it passes the time

engage mouth not wallet

I lost my £6000 roll playing blackjack/roullete/fruities back in about November/December... taught me a lesson and I wont touch the casino games ever again..really not worth it! Taken months to earn it back grinding at poker again from nothing. -EV and boring.

Stick to poker  *g

I either go to the casino to play poker, or bet at the tables. I don't mix the two and this seems to work for me.

1. Only bring enough cash for Poker and drink/food
2. Never bring your credit/debit cards into a casino

I think its a mindset and all the diversion tactics in the world will only lessen the chance of you doing your money on bj or roulette. I think you need to work out why you are doing your money and attack the route of the problem.

I actually play 1000's hands of blackjack a month but they are all on the internet casino bonus chasing, I personally cannot see the sense in playing a game Im not +ev in. That is my nature i think, im not gambler as such even though i spend my whole life engaging in gambling activities.

Thats how I got into this in the 1st place.

While bonus chasing, playing BJ, I was introduced to poker and have never played an online casino game since (I know there is still profit to be made but I can't bring myself to spend the time needed when I could be playing poker).

So when I'm in the casino waiting for a tourney to start I play a little BJ and when you have spent a while bonus chasing you know how to play every hand perfectly reducing the house edge as much as possible (but never removing it completely). Watching some of the other poker players decisions at a BJ table does make you wonder if they will gamble so much at the poker table.....  Oh and I see any of them playing roulette I guess they defiantly will  ;)

Again I find myself sat at home having lost playing roulette without ever intending to play the stupid game in the first place!

No-one has pointed it out yet but, to me, this reads like problem gambling behaviour.

If you have set out with the intention of not doing this the next time, have failed to do so and have done your money again, then I'd question whether its a good idea for you to be in the casino.

Perhaps the problem is not as serious as you describe (perhaps the wording of your post makes it read worse than it is - only you know this) but you need to understand what is causing you to return to the table games.

For the record, I've spent more hours in UK casinos than I'd care to count up.  Apart from 30 minutes at the Gala Maybury enjoying the novelty of a craps table I've not bet a single penny at the table games.  Its easy to do.  If its not then you need to question why.

Sorry to sound so moral about this, but I feel I have to point this out.

 :goodpost:

If you can't be in a casino and avoid playing the pit games, then you shouldn't expose yourself to them - in other words don't go into the casino.

Same as an alcoholic who can't go into a pub without drinking an alcoholic drink.  The solution is not to go into the pub.

I personally don't see the allure of the pit games.  I'm not a gambler as such, so maybe my mentality is different.  When I go to a casino to play a poker tournament, I'll usually read a magazine, chat to other players and watch sport on the telly - whilst maybe having a cheeky pint. If someone I know is playing the pit games, then I might go and watch, but I never feel tempted to play.  If you're someone who can't resist them, then this would obviously be a bad idea.

yeah but if nobody was stupid enough to play roulette then casinos would have to put up the tournament entry fees, start charging session fees and introduce tipping for the dealers. We wouldn't want that would we.

What if you want money for Poker Cash Games after the tourn. Its ok to say only take enough money for that aswell, but that could be over £100 and if you blow it early on youll want your card to play more. And then some people will get tempted to use that money for blackjack anyway.

I used to play blackjack a lot, but when in Stoke i came 4th in the Poker tourn but only broke even for the trip due to blackjack losses, i realised it wasnt worth it and have managed not to play since.

In reply to the "it sounds like problem gambling behaviour" (sorry I don't know how to do the quote thing) you might be right, but I don't ever feel the need to play these games unless I find myself at a loose end during tournament downtime.  I think the problem is that I simply get bored standing around doing nothing.  Maybe I am just addicted to not being bored - If that makes sense!  :dontask:

It doesn't sound like an addiction from what you've said here.

You're just bored!  Get yourself a PSP or something similar and take it with you to the casino.  It'll cost you whatever they cost - but it'll pay for itself in due course.  Just an idea....

Not sure if you can take them in to a Casino, I will ask next time I go, not a bad idea that.  ;carlocitrone;

Don't see why not...:dontask: - but you never know.

You could also take a book in with you to read - depends if you're a big reader or not.
