Title: Gretna deserve their crack at SPL
Post by: damon on May 17, 2007, 03:37:36 PM
What is the F..king problem with the SPL?
Gretna have got to sweat it out to see if they will be allowed to play in the SPL. Where is the justice?
Gretna may not have a suitable ground and may not generate much cash as a buisiness but they deserve their crack at the SPL because their business has been done on the park. They have climbed through the leagues with ease and lets be honest none of the lower league clubs have any money and the majority don't have stadiums suitable for a SPL club.
Ground sharing is ideal for these newly promoted clubs, to give them a least a chance of having a crack and who knows might even survive the in SPL.
I reckon Gretna would hold their own and if they keep improving at the rate they have been a 6th 7th or 8th place finish is on the cards, which would buy them some time and who knows maybe fighting for a UEFA place in two or three years. The problem Gretna have is their team are ahead of their own schedule.
They might even do the unthinkable and finish 2nd to Rangers and then they'll be able to rake money in from a Hollywood Blockbuster.
Good luck Gretna.

I read a story that they've been allowed to play in the SPL next season because they've already agreed to switch all their home games to Motherwell's Fir Park.

Maybe my jungle wires have been crossed somehwere?

That's right.

And it wasn't the SPL to blame here. There were objections to Gretna lodged by St Mirren and Dunfirmline, so the SPL had to look at it.

Of course, St Mirren and Dunfirmline may have had a vested interest in denying Gretna promotion...

Maybe Dunfirmline should have got the English Premiership to look into it - they are good at keeping teams in top flight football when they don't deserve it.................  ;whistle;

The Gretna fairytale will ground to a shuddering halt imo.  They were able to steamroller through the lower leagues by throwing a few thousand about, when no other club can afford to throw a few hundred about.  Different story now they are in the SPL (as bad as it is at the moment) guys like Boyle at Motherwell and Keane? at Livingston tried it and while they had short term success there were long term consequences (both went into administration).  Simple fact is Gretna have no fans, therefore cannot generate revenue therefore will have to be continually bankrolled by Mileson and I think its fair to assume he doesnt have an endless supply of money.

As for them being promoted..if they meet the criteria set out then yes, if not then no

Sorry, the SPL have accepted their offer to play at Fir Park.
It is the basement boys who are objecting, and the SPL are notifying them as we write.
I would have liked to see Dunfermline stay up,but they have themselves to blame ( playing 2 months out of 10 is not enough)
Maybe Gretna will finish 2nd,qualify for the Champs League and beable to buy some fans.

Maybe buying a share in Gretna instead of Leeds Utd ( as in Leeds Utd thread) for £35 a pop would help their cause.
The fact they will be playing in Central Scotland might attract a few neutrals, you might even get a few Hamilton, Airdrie, Motherwell and Albion fans jumping ship for the Gretna Gallacticos

Not saying they aren't better than all of those teams, just no chance of any of those supporters going along to see Gretna

.... Anyway everybody knows that Clyde are the best team in Lanarkshire.... :)up
