Title: Installing more RAM in a laptop
Post by: Graham C on May 18, 2007, 12:27:09 AM
Is it easy enough?  I'm happy enough taking normal PC's apart, but I've never opened my laptop.  An extra 512mb of RAM is only a £15 and I think I could use a gig rather than the 512 I currently have.

Easier than a pc, just slide open the cover and pop it in ;)

I suppose the same compatability issues exist with latops as Desktops ?

Obviously check your laptop has room for more ram and that the stuff you buy is compatable, but yeah it's really easy.

Sweet, ta guys.  I went to Crucial's website and they analyse your computer to see what type of ram is ok for you, I'll just grab one of the recommended ones.

Ta again :)

I've been planning on upgrading mine as well, where have found 512M for £15?

Then I did the system scanner and it said what I needed.

bit confused, went on the site and did the scan that silo said and it came back with

Available Memory Slots:  0
Number of Banks:  1

Does that mean i will have to take out the other bit of RAM in there or do i have a spare slot to just add another 512 in??

i'm sure if you push hard enough you can squeeze some in via the cd drive or thru the holes in the back of it.

Will the fur not cause it to overheat and break though?

Fraid so, means you don't have a spare memory slot and to upgrade you'd need to remove the current memory stick and put a new one it.

All animals have fur - some happen to have a longer more denser fur than others which may lead to it being given another name. At the end of the day though it's still fur ;)

is that a bitch to do or just a little bit harder than slotting a separate one in??

I was quite surprised by the fact my toshy only has 256 ram.

You just pop them out and pop the new one in I expect.  It's like that on pc's anyway.

Most laptop RAM is installed via removing a panel on the underside of the laptop - usually 2 phillips screws. There are usually 2 RAM slots there. Easiest thing to do is remove the panels to see if the RAM slot is there and how many spare slots you have. You can also look at the sticker on your RAM and see what speed it is and buy the same.

If you remove all the panels and there is no RAM visible, you just might have a laptop where the RAM is a bit more aukward to get to.

With a lot of older laptops the RAM can sometimes be under the keyboard which is not advisable to remove unless you know what you are doing. With regards to newer laptops it should be relatively easy to remove the memory flap on the bottom and either replace the existing RAM or add to the RAM if there is a spare slot. Just be careful because some laptops have mini PCI slots together with the memory slots which are for either wireless cards or modem/network cards.

If your RAM is DDR2, then this is a good deal: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deal/31639/crucial-1gb-ddr2-667mhz-pc2-5300-la

Caution!!

Don't forget to ground yourself before playing with the memory.  Otherwise static electricity can ruin it.

Well we're not playing with it so we won't need to bother.

Is this a case where a +ve will cause -EV  (http://members.shaw.ca/wenpigsfly/smileys/tumbleweed.gif)
