Title: Help needed on films
Post by: hector62 on May 20, 2007, 06:38:23 PM
My girlfriend is a member of a DVD club but is appalling at choosing good films- this has just culminated in the ridiculous " Children of men" being watched in about 25 mins in fast speed. I would like some recommendations for films to get sent. preferably not action films but ones with a good story, or good comedy ones.

For a scary movie,  you have to get ' The Woman in Black'.  It is a fairly old movie from about 15 years ago.  I have seen it advertised on a few DVD sites and one day I will rent it again.   I never find horror movies frightening,  but this movie is a real heart stopper

This film is awesomeness, so well put together, but you really need Denzel in that role, what a performance.

Just saw 'Crash' (recent oscar winning one), and it was really really excellent, a very different, interlaced film, but very moving.

'PierrePoint' (last hangman in UK) was superb also, not cheery, but a great movie nonetheless.

My other favourites include 'Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind', '21 grams', Solaris, Heat, 'Ivans Xtc' (black also, but worth seeing), American History X. 'Derailed' is good fun too, a good plot driven movie.

I just logged into imdb.com to check a couple of things, they're going subscription only grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

My girlfriend hates all of the movies above and not because she hates the plots, its because even though i have them all on DVD, i HAVE to watch them if they come on sky or normal telly.

Edit, cant wait for the new bourne one to come out.

I may also lose credit for admitting i f'in love the harry potter movies and cant wait for the new one of that to come out either!

La vita e bella / Life is beautiful (drama - must see)

I know it is a bit pretentious recommending foreign language films but I would echo this one.  Without a doubt in my Top 3.

Just to prove this bucks the trend though, 'Big' with Tom Hanks in right up there too.

:)

There are some great foreign language films out there - I'm a fan of asian films, these are all very accessible:

Farewell My Concubine
2046
Kung-fu Hustle
Chungking Express
Hana-bi
Battle Royale
Hard Boiled
Ring
Spirited Away

And of course Crouching Tiger...

Maybe subtitles are akin to on-screen displays of hole cards in TV poker programmes: useful, superfluous, a minor irritation, or vital to the plot according to your viewpoint.

Foreign language films can be a refreshing change from McHollywood fare: they are more than cultural marmite.

'The Prestige', one of the best films I have seen in ages and ages, have just watched it and will watch again before I send it back. Superb performances from Jackson, Bale and Cain. Brilliant script, costumes and direction. But spoooooky too.
A must see.
