I just got mugged outside Gran Casino Barcelona for €4k, what a bunch of fucking bollox, scum of the earth.

kudos to blondeite RobS who was with me and chased the twats down, sadly they were too good at what they do to get caught.

I know someone else that was mugged in barcelona & think there was a scooter involved. Police seemed powerless to do anything.

Very sorry to hear about this, but as you probably know you are not the first.  It really is time that something was done about it.  Organisers of tournaments should specifically warn participants about this.  There should also be a facility in the casino to book a taxi so you don't have to wander about outside trying to find one.

They do already do this and still this seems to be a regular occurrence, these low-lives seem to have it down to a fine art around the casino.

James, it's damn annoying about the money, but it's only money at the end of the day. As long as you are OK and physically unhurt, that's all that matters. Look on the bright side (if there is one lol) you can compare notes with your brother now!

I went out on a stag do last year, we had two people get mugged, four pickpocketed, and one threatened our resident martial arts expert with a pipe - and got a beating.

You are now the third player to suffer this outside the Barcelona Casino (to my knowledge). The casino must do something to protect their visitors... I know they were steadfastly uninterested when the other 2 incidents occurred. Perhaps players should boycott this casino until they can provide some security.

I watched a euronews show about a year ago about that region,  it discussed gangs of immigrants from North Africa attacking people and taking their belongings.  They tended to stab their victims on the buttocks with a knife before robbing them.  At least this didn't happen to you mate.   Not only is it terrible to be robbed, but to get stabbed on the buttocks has to add insult to injury

I think it was 4 or 5 years ago me and the mrs went on a day trip around Barcelona when on holiday from Malaga and there was an attempt to steal the wifes purse. a woman asked for a light, the wifes hand bag was over her shoulder, and a guy was behind her waiting to put his hand in her bag when she drew her lighter. At this time i was about 15 feet away. The thing is that the wife was suspicious and gave her the light cig she was carrying, the guy clocked me and i shook my head. They then both loked at me and walked off. It was a close thing but there all over Barcalona, this was early afternoon with thousands of people about.

btw a little tip for those carring alot of money on them

in a location they are unfamilair with is a 2nd wallet with only a few pound in it

so when your mugged you hand over the fake wallet not the one with the money in it

2nd tip in a mugging never fight back money can be replaced your life cant

Something I always try to do is to keep money in seperate pockets. That way if you get robbed you hand over the contents of one pocket and hope that they don't get you to empty your pockets.
Barcelona is full of scam merchants as well, a guy I know fell for a fake policeman scam and handed him his credit card as ID and disclosed his pin to prove who he was  ::)

Mr Robjent was mugged in the same place a few years ago, as were Matt Tyler & Nick Slade last year. It's a seriously dangerous place, Barcelona.

I got done a few years ago coming out of Nottingham. It prompted me to write an article about it which I submitted to Tikay but it was about the time of the change over from the old site to this one. If I still have it somewhere it might be worth a look.  Don't know if Tikay still has it on file antwhere.

Just thought to make it clearer i said mugged what i meant was pick pocketed, one guy was distracting me pretending to football tackle me (how did i not see it coming) the other chap was obviously lifting my wallet, i straight away checked my pocket because it didn't seem normal, i felt it was gone, myself and rob gave chase they tossed the wallet so at least i have my cards!

Karma will sort these mugs out, they'll get their comeuppance eventually, even if that won't bring your money back...

When I was in barca (with flushy as well) I foolishly got in an unmarked cab to get back to my hotel and although absolutely wasted still had more than a few alarm bells go off when it pulled into an alleyway and the driver met up with a few of his mates. Luckily I can run pretty fast otherwise they'd have almost certainly got the couple of thousand euros i had on me.

Also had a guy pull a knife on me in Ibiza when I left the group I was with and try and get money off me.

Definitely a warning for when you are on hols, drinking a lot and your guard naturally goes down as you are having fun, remember that you're a target for the robbers and thieves who prey on the fact that you're in unfamiliar territory.

As beautiful as it is, Barcelona is full of scum. Whether it's pickpockets (I saw one Geordie bloke get pickpocketed by a girl on the train from the airport), African prostitutes built like hodcarriers trying to drag you down an alleyway or gangs of knifed-up Moroccans there is plenty you have to watch out for. Obviously late at night is dangerous for the robberies, but the pickpockets will work in broad daylight in busy areas.

18.    I, too, was a victim in the Ramblas. This event occurred in broad daylight. 2 young men walked up to me, smiling, one guy wearing a nylon sports outfit, and started to say something regarding "Futbol", which got my attention since I play soccer and know that soccer is really popular in Spain. He proceeded to show a soccer-like move (a ball-dribble move), which put his body close to mine. This quickly alerted my instincts, as well as my friend. In a matter of seconds, I saw my wallet dangling from my jeans. Fortunately, I was wearing a wallet with a chain connected to my belt loop. Having noticed that the wallet wouldn't budge, he left with his partner and brazenly approached an older couple. At this time I was just astonished at the boldness with which they try to commit this crime. This was my first time in Barcelona and this experience has really soured me. Can the US State Department do something about this?

similar thing nearly happened to me and chubs in barca a few years ago

but i sussed it before it happened .

i was spiked in a club ,i was only drinking cokes .

 i was of my nut and had to get a taxi ,i had 40k in a bag lol.

luckily i got out while the going was good .

I just saw this as an exceptional circumstance & situation, & chose to turn a blind eye on this occasion, "one of ours" had gone through a shocking experience, & vented his feelings, & it'd be tough to censure or Delete under the specific circumstances, as well as, possibly, unreasonable.

Had the exact thing tried on me outside the casino during the EPT...one guy originally asking for a light then saying "ohhh English" and trying the football move while shouting "Ronaldinho Ronaldinho". I managed  to push him away when I eventually realised what was going on but close call

flushy, I'm sorry this happened to you, and I'm sure you've heard enough of comments like this, but these guys all go round armed and you got lucky just to lose cash. A friend of mine has a nice beard to mask the nice ear to ear job he got from two 'undercover cops', and I lost £200 once with a few automatic weapons pointed at my nose.
Force of habit now makes me carry £40 in one pocket, the rest somewhere near my balls, and if I'm stopped I hand it over and never, ever look them in the face. Let alone chase them.

On a serious note, there's some sensible advice on here about basic precautions to take when carrying anything of value.

As well as the decoy wallet, I'd suggest a money belt to be worn under your shirt, when carrying serious amounts of cash.

I think that poker players become numb to the amounts they are dealing with, and forget just what a target they could be.
