nice one mick  :)up

had a quick look online last night and surely savvas dog westmead lord must have a chance? 2 decent recent times at wimbledon and looks well blessed with early pace at 33/1 looks good value. need to get a post and study some sectionals and splits.

Title: Re: BLUE SQUARE 2007 GREYHOUND DERBY.
Post by: Slick Kid on May 31, 2007, 06:48:44 PM
Yes, Westmead Lord is an unusual dog for Savva because it has early pace and although early in its career it did not look as though it would stay strong 480's, it looks as though he has matured well in the hands of the competent Savva.

1. My first bit of Derby Advice is to stay clear of Ante Post Favourite, FEAR HARIBO. This is a class dog with everything a derby dog would want except one essential ingredient which is essential at Plough Lane, consistency at the boxes. He sometimes misses the break and no track is less forgiving than Wimbledon. If he had strength over a distance this would not be a problem, but he is no Late Late Show or Westmead Hawk. My decision is not based on his 2/7fav defeat in a Trial stakes the other night as no doubt this run will have been needed to blow the cobwebs out and the fact a pigeon chaser caught him after he lead to the line is not form l would bother with. I have watched him many times and for me he doesn't like to battle for Victory, which is something he will encounter several times in order to win the Big One.

LAY FEAR HARIBO

A dog i will be betting is called Droopys Robinho this dog has explosive early broke the track record aaround lifford for the 350 yards.
Fraser Black trains him so he will be well prepared he also had a recent spin over the 525 a flyin 28.46 around newbridge.

Early pace and stays get on lads he 16s at the min!!

We have three running tonight at Romford, Slick Sensation, Slick Soviet and Galdare Honcho.

Slick Sensation goes in a sprint and after posting a fast time in a comeback sprint the other night is in good form but he will probably need the run.

Slick Soviet was very unlucky in the Semi Finals of the Scurry, being wiped out at the first by a wide runner in three. He will go very well tonight.

Galdare Honcho is a brother of He Said So, and cost £700 after he broke a hock with Paul Hennesy. Great little dog, great draw tonight, fancied to go close.

went down bookies last nite to back micks tip he so kindly pmed me only to discover its gona be roughly evens.

not looking to lump on i decide to have a £10 fourfold try run up some money onto it.

the 7.30pm claimer was just about to start so i put the favourite in which won at 6/4
england and brazil to draw got lucky in the last min 9/4
and the last leg was dettori to win the derby at 5/4

unfortunatly micks tip trailed in a disappointed 4th 0f 5 after bad trouble.

shame really as came to a nice few quid for a tenner, never mind !

maybe next time

I am on the following antepost at various odds

Jaxerback
Loyal Honcho
Express Comet
Farloe Black
Astronomic
Tyrur Lee

on the basis that there is a wide and unjustified spread in the value available on a lot of the decent Irish dogs, and a lot of the favourites look too short to me, with some questionmarks. A couple have come in significantly since i backed them due to good trials, especially Comet and Farloe Black, but I reckon there is still probably some mileage in this approach.

I am also on these 2 a bit, just for fun. no theory.

Larkhill Jim
Calzaghe Boyo

I am very far from an expert on dogracing though so please don't put too much store in these thoughts if you might have, it should give me an interest for the next few weeks though hopefully, possibly with a view to a bit of trading on betfair as things go on.

Be interested to know what anyone else has gone for. Good luck all.

I love greyhound racing and have done for many years now. When I first started going my Saturday nights used to regularly start with the early meeting at Stamford Bridge (5.45pm 1st race), followed by piling into taxis six at a time at the end of racing to White City where you could just catch the last three or four races for half price admission.

Anyhow I put all that experience to good use this year when a puppy that caught my eye in January or February in a televised race and I had a few quid on him @ 300/1 on Betfair.

Meenala Cruiser, currently quite well fancied at around 25/1 after doing the clock at Sunderland a week or so back.

Unfortunately it was literally a few quid as that was all that was available, but he is an improving  puppy and  I've certainly had my money's worth already. Good looking draw in round one too, I just wish these heats were televised.

Go on my cocker  ;sark;

Belly, just to let you know we purchased Trade Plate tonight for £20k plus of a large advert in the Racing Post today. All being well, and if he passes the vet tommorrow in Ireland he will run(albeit under the name of my Irish Uncle as NGRC RULES dont allow a transfer so close to a comp) for us this week. We had tried to buy him last year for a much larger sum but they would not sell.

nice one mick.

looking at its shelbourne times it has a bit to find on some of the other irish entries but i can only see 2 lines of form there so may have better before that.
decent 28.90 first look at the track should improve further. looks ideal derby type, one to get through a few rounds as it looks like he stays well.

early pace inside him in the first round , hopefully slip round behind unscathed and outstay the 5 dog.

good luck mate

Title: Re: BLUE SQUARE 2007 GREYHOUND DERBY.
Post by: Slick Kid on June 05, 2007, 06:37:00 AM
I agree with your comments mate especially the one about him staying. The Irish Derby is the Main aim with the 550yrd distance but he might stay further. Surprised he was not tried over a distance sooner, but John Tuohy has now become a very respectable breeder so that explains it. Irish breeders wont use stayers.

Go on my cocker  ;sark;

I was big into Dogs when I lived in London, 6 nights a week. Hendon (sadly missed, it's Brent Cross Shoping Centre now!), Haringey, Hackney Wick on Saturday mornings, White City, Walthamstow, Wimbledon. I could never find a winner at the City, but Derby night was just awesome there, never been as good since. In later years it was Watford BAGS, & Slough, where I don't recall ever having a losing night. Thats a Sainsburys now I believe. Catford was ace too - I loved the sprints there, & The Guineas at The Wick was my fave annual event. Crayford used to have 8 dog races I think.

The Savvas & their "Westmeads" ruled the roost in those days. I seem to recall Nikki had an Open Race dog that won 29 straight Opens.

When I moved to to Derbyshire, I tried Derby & Colwick Dogs, but after the London scene, it was as dull as dishwater, & a very weak market, £100 moved any dog odds on, Owlerton seems to be the best place in these parts.

Happy days eh Ralph?.

tell you like your dogs mate "bit of a tool" thats greyhound talk.

seriously though as good a start as it is you dont win the derby in the first round and the fastest animal doesnt necessarily always win it.

What do you mean, "a few years after you Tony"?

I quite forgot Romford, great little trck, & yes, Haringey with it's grass.

At Hackney on a Saturday morning, I never missed it in years, it was the best atmo at any dog track, the locals & punters were mostly dodgy villains & such like. Liz Frazer was alway there, she was a bit of a moll, & Ronnie Knight, who was later to marry Barbara Windsor, then done an 18 stretch I believe, after being extradited from Spain, I think he waa involved in the Brinks-Mat gold bullion heist at Heathrow, & a few murders here & there.

Derby Night at White City was just awesome, the place'd be packed, & it had the famous "Derby Roar" as the hare approached the traps. Many a dog missed the break because the Roar was so loud. I well remember Dolores Rocket  - a bitch - wiinning in, I think, 1970 or '71. She missed the break, but came off the rail on the last bend to due to crowding and ran round her field to win going away in a veey good time.. She also won the St Leger later that year. I also watched Patricias Hope win it back to back in, I'd think, '73 & '74.

I'm waiting for them to make crayford a supermarket, what a dump that gaffs turned into.

it's like a glorified pub/nightclub with 200 18-25 year olds and their girlfriends getting mashed on vodka and redbull inside the bar with no interest whatsoever in the dog meeting that happens to be going on outside, whats the point? go to a pub or a night club!

Ive popped over there a couple of times in the last two months on a Saturday night and if you've got any interest in proper dog racing i suggest you steer well clear of crayford, none of the faces are there anymore, no real punters at all.

because they're all staying inside and betting on the tote it fucks the outside market up,theres such a disparity between the tote and on course it's stupid, its so weak my pal had 60 pound on the 3/1jf which compelled the bookmaker to make it 5/2f, you just cant believe it.

I asked tony morris how much he took on the last race he said: 35 quid!!!!!!!!!!

I said why do you still come, he said "this is my game, its better than sitting indoors watching eastenders"!

I understand that with in betting shop and online gambling growing dog racing as a night out is becoming less popular and that maybe dog tracks have to start marketing there venues a little differently and appeal to people looking for a good night out but for me the dog racing should always come first at a dog track and at crayford its just not even funny how oblivious the drinkers are to whats going on outside of the bar.

do not go to crayford for a night out if you have any aspirations of having a dog bet!

Go on my cocker  ;sark;

Happy days eh Ralph?.

a few years after you tony but i also spent most my early years visiting the london tracks. thats how i fell in love with the game.

my local track was romford so 2/3 nights a week there.haringay friday nights (the best track around for dogs in them days with grass straights) saturday mornings were hackney where they done the meanest full english going prior to racing.wembley saturday nights.

when we eventually went into ownership our bitch ran at crayford and then later catford. being an open racer i see her run and win at wimbledon and the stow.

i was to young for white city unfortunatly and heard that derby nights there were a bit special.

so many tracks are now supermarkets such a shame

JESUS CHRIST Bolt, l put this thread up to get a bit of interest generated in one of our dying sports. Anyone reading your post that was thinking of going for a night out to the dogs will be REACHING for a rope or the nearest Stanley knife. Also Bolt, all who are involved know of these problems AND ARE TRYING TO CHANGE PEOPLES VIEWS. Most people like you and l enjoy a punt on a good percentage market and YES, l agree with ur points, but if the promoters don't get these 6/10 packers through the doors then they cant afford to run the amenities. The track will run itself especially Crayford as its promoters are the best in the dog game for taking care of the trainers and dogs welfare. The revenue generated from BAGS /BEGS for Crayford and sister track Monmore is simply UNREAL ensuring their long term survival. The internet markets are much better than the bookies on track mate, so why go as they only want your hard earned. Bookies are SLIM BALLS who l enjoy cleaning. This was not a dig at you Bolt, as l certainly know what you are referring to, but PLEASE lets keep this thread about the Derby and the good things in Greyhound Racing.

The Derby is well under way and my god there have been some fantastic runs, Barnfield on Air being one of the many. What a great Competition it is and if any of you require tickets please let me know.

Good luck with your BETS

Mick.

Looking forward to Friday Mr Belly.

I'm so glad that you told me about the coverage on BSq, it makes such a difference when you can watch every race many times.

I've also had a little dabble on Killer Keane after his first run, big price I thought 160/1 on BF, only 40/1 with some bookies.

Good luck !

still looks like the dog has a big future if it keeps improving.

Has everyone lost interest already? :-)
Looking at Tuesday nights card I think there is value to be found in Nervous Woody(T3) at 7/1 to win his heat.
It is a tricky heat, but I give him a better chance of victory than the three market leaders at a better price than all three combined. He did extremely well last round to qualify after taking a bump at the bend still posting a 28.94 in the process and his 28.59 in the previous round was blistering. He had everything his own way then and has a good chance of getting out ahead again in this heat.
He should go clear of Calzage boy (T2) and Caulry Fast Trap(T4) by the first bend on all but his worst trapping form and traps 5&6 could easily come together at the 1st bend. Trap 1 Express Ego is the main danger for me, he should turn for the bend on the rails upsides Nervous Woody, but if Woody can get clear on the second bend he has the all round speed to see off T1's fast finish.
Not a banker by any stretch of the imagination, but if this dog was from one of the more fashionable kennels you would be lucky to get 5/2.
I have also invested on Droopy's Robinho before the last round at 10/1, if he can keep improving (which he should as he has had only 3three 4 bend races this year) I should get a run for my money, my main concern is his early pace, which is good but not in the same league as the market leader Phoenix Paddy(I have had a small saver on him). I am just hoping that P Paddy has peaked too early, though I may well be clutching at straws. After having an in depth look at Nervous Woody's form I have also had a bit of the 50/1 available about him for the whole event (e/w naturally).
EDIT- 10/1 currently available with Corals.

and there in lies the reason why i gave up on greyhounds many many moons ago - Droopy's Robinho odds on to win, 2nd ante post favourite and finished stone cold last behind the 25/1 outsider of the race, yes got battered all over the show but til they put monkey jockeys on board they're never going to run in a straight line!! :D

had a quick look online last night and surely savvas dog westmead lord must have a chance? 2 decent recent times at wimbledon and looks well blessed with early pace at 33/1 looks good value. need to get a post and study some sectionals and splits.

not bad advice before the tournament started now 3/1 2nd favourite with 12 left!

shame i didnt take my own advice! >:( never had a penny on it!

Back to the drawing board for me, all of my ante post bets went down the swannee on last nights card :-(
Good luck with Farloe Premier. I might just save my money until the night of the final when we will be making our annual pilgramige from the North East to Plough Lane for the best nights racing of the year,

Out of my ante post picks only Loyal Honcho still going, is now time to trade out though?  In particular I'm a bit worried about all those wides in the semi, some possibility of a pile up I think. Although he should be ok where he is in that one, if he gets through there will be loads in the final so again possibility of a tricky draw. Think the whole thing is very open, with no dog a class above after Paddy got injured. Logic dictates that makes it time to get off the favourite.

Yep Farloe is lucky as most dogs that can lead him on the inner are now out, thats why i fancy his chances. Ullid Conor can lead him up if drawn inside him but he has been drawn T2 for the semis so that is a bonus.
Would like to see Farloe in T2 if he makes it through to the final as thats where he seems to break better from - and his form over 6 bends hopefully means if he gets on the bunny its OI OI!!

Just want to say a big congratulations to Caulry Fast Trap on making it to the final despite his big odds. His owners are great friends of mine and I was with them at Wimbledon last night. The dog was 25/1 for his heat but ran a stormer to qualify in third place. It's a great reward for the hard working trainer too - Rab and Liz McNair have done a great job steering this dog to the final.

Next Saturday there's no real pressure as once again he'll be the complete rag of the field, but I reckon he'll run a stormer and do everyone proud. I can confidently predict he'll have the biggest set of supporters and it will be a night to remember.

Go Caulry............... ;yippee; ;yippee; ;yippee;

Although he hasn't shortened at all in qualifying, I still think Honcho is the best dog left in it and should win with a clear run. I await the draw with interest.

Derby final draw
1 Forest Scholes, 2 Ullid Conor, 3 Dilemmas Flight (w), 4 Caulry Fast Trap (w), 5 Loyal Honcho (w), 6 Westmead Lord (w)

Looks a good battle between 5 and 6 down to the first bend - based on the running in the semis I'd fancy Honcho to lead Westmead up but Savva has a great record in finals.

A good draw for Caulry - he's not an out and out wide runner and I hop he gets a split just behind the inside three.

The draw has worked out well for as clean a race as possible - Dilemmas won her semi from trap 3 and won the Oaks from trap  2. I fancy Forest Scholes to reverse semi final running with Ullid now that he's drawn inside him.

If you have no money invested cheer on trap 4 in the final - he's 25/1 so up against it but stranger things have happened. I'll be there for what is always greyhound racings best night of the year.

I will be heading down with a few mates from Newcastle, we go every year for a lads weekend on the beer :-) .  We always go on the far side which is cheaper to get in (not the reason we go there) and less crowded. There are usually at least 6 or 7 bookies standing and it is a lot easier to grab a price about your dog without having to wade through scores of punters.
The one and only time I went in the other side it was like sitting in a green housei  in that glass fronted stand and very claustrophobic. We prefer to watch from outside, high up on the 3rd bend, which is a decent vantage point, though not good for calling close finishes from.
Don't know what I am going for in the final, but I will not be investing heavily as I think this race is wide open. Currently I fancy backing the bitch to finally win a derby at Wimbledon, she has certainly been the most consistent, though I will have to sit down and go through the form properly.
Bit cheesed off that I missed the price on Geordie Parker, I wanted to back him for the plate but got held up at work and didn't get home in time to get on :-(
I recommend Derby Final night to anyone, the best nights dog racing of the year hands down.

I'm setting off in half an hour... hotel all booked, 30 of us going and all cheering Caulry Fast Trap on. OK, he's the outsider, but he is there on merit and will not be phased by the Derby roar. All connections are delighted to be part of this great event and I'm confident the dog will run a stormer. 33/1 with Hills is a price I've taken each way, as his running style is such that he wont lead but would benefit from first bend crowding which is likely and he'll be running on strongly from the 3rd bend. To me the obvious danger is Dilemmas Flight - her run in the semis makes her the favourite going into the final in my eyes.

My other selections for what it's worth:

Unique Option (t5) 7.26
Westmead Aoifa (t6) 7.45
Zig Zag Dutchy (t3) 8.05
Shelbourne Laura (t4) 8.25
Executive Memo (t4) 9.25
January Tiger (t5) 10.55

Oh, and Rookies dog to win in 2009!

Come on Caulry, run your heart out but most of all come back safe and sound.  :respect:

Agreed Dilemma's is the one I'm worried about, I don't think Lord is as big a danger. I think you're getting plenty of value with the each way on CFT, anything could happen in this race.

Title: Re: BLUE SQUARE 2007 GREYHOUND DERBY.
Post by: Karabiner on July 07, 2007, 12:53:38 PM
I think Westmead Lord will run much better from trap 6 and seems overpriced to me @ 4.8 on Befair.

Of course he'll need to pop out which my selections have not done in the derby thus far...

Didn't see it, but so it goes. Hope you guys enjoyed it and can give me a good report. Had a nice run for my 90s there, but I think Paddys was the class dog, great shame.

I think Westmead Lord will run much better from trap 6 and seems overpriced to me @ 4.8 on Befair.

Of course he'll need to pop out which my selections have not done in the derby thus far...

Good prediction!

Thank you that was a nice result which more than compensated for my earlier "investments".

I also managed to win the laddies $9k tonight for $2700 so all in all a fair night  ;yippee;
