Ive got a dilema:) A rather good one! My work have mistakenly given me a 20k wage rise. They have completely messed up on an nhs-wide pay review and I appear to be a big winner(in my dreams). The thing is that it really is a mistake. So the question is; Do you say nothing and spend it? Then worry about paying it back later? lol; Or do you declare it today to the pay office and get them to take it back asap??

Been there done that and owned up. I am too honest for my own good, but wouldn't look good if you didn't make your boss aware of this.

The alternative is to not spend the money. Just lump it in a savings account and when they ask for the money back you can keep the interest.  :D

Yes, it makes you wonder how much this goes on and if companies are sophisticated to notice? I would also hand the 15k back as the karma is bound to catch up with you. One time I found a tenner in a supermarket. Instead of handing it in, i kept it. For about 3 months afterwards, I had such bad luck. My cylinder head gasket went twice, house flooded. You name it and it happened to me in that 3 months:) Honesty is the best policy.

lol..it's the NHS, they won't find out. There are Billions that go missing there every year..20k is a days worth of interest.

I've come across this many times at work since they outsourced the wages and it is the only occasion a company can deduct from your wage without permission (an overpayment).
I had it myself when i was overpaid £1300 one month but i made a deal to repay £100 per month but they *could* take it back willy nilly if they so choose.

I know someone who had a sharesave at work where the company deducted £200 per month and send it to the Halifax' sharesave account, he left work and cancelled his account with halifax and got his money out.
The company however forgot to cancel the halifax payment and as the account was closed they forwarded the £200 on to my pal every month for over 5 years after he had left!!!!

I'd say nothing and resign and find another job.

Yeah, you've got to fess up. The only way you might get away with keeping an overpayment of wages is if it wasn't reasonable for you to notice (i.e. it was just a few quid a month or something).

In answer to the original question, if I got a 20k pay rise I would probably spend it on poker :D

go back and demand more - your worth it..............

Keep it jil july/august fly frst class to vegas, stay in bellagio suite, buy yourself into Main Event and win 12 million minimum then pay it back, simple!!!!

20k is that a day week month or year?

if its more often i would wait for them to notice then slip off somewhere with the money and start a new life

Send a letter thanking them for the wage rise and ask them a question about tax, or something.

This way, you have pointed out their mistake but you have also given them the opportunity to make another mistake by confirming it in their reply to you  ;D

keep it youve been underpaid for years anyway infact 20k probably isnt even enough. i say keep it for the time being and stick it in a savings account if they come looking for it so be it but i wouldnt go out my way to give it back i just wouldnt spend it

Get it in  high savings acount and reap a few months interest off it .. 6% will pay you £1200 pa.. Thats £100 a month..

every month that goes by you gain £100.. if you can argue it out for 200 months then you both have 20k hehe

The missus was overpaid quite a few years back during her sandwich year at uni with Norwich Union.  Basically, they paid her an extra month.  When she received the money, she contacted them to ask if it was correct or not (she honestly didn't know when the final month's pay was coming in, but had thought this one was in error).  She eventually got through to someone in accounts who rudely told her she'd be paid what she was due.

So, as poor students, we thought nothing more of it, they'd told her that she'd receive the correct amount - and she'd made the effort to check and return the money if it was an error.

Then about 3 months later she received a formal letter requesting the money to be returned.  We didn't have the money any more, but spoke to citizen's advice and a solicitor friend.  We were basically told that the law is vague in this area but the main point is that if you weren't aware that the money wasn't yours, and if you'd be in a worse position if you had to pay the money back than you would have been if you hadn't received it in the first place, then the law is on your side - and what often happens in this case is that you pay it back within your means, and for a non-earning student this would have been about £3 a week...

Anyway, we stuck to our guns, and wrote a letter back explaining the situation.  Norwich Union wrote off the amount.

Not sure if that's always the case, but that's what happened to us. 

Man, I hate that. If you make an error, they charge you a fee.

You are within your right to charge them for the time you have spent to sort this error out....£35 an hour would be a fair rate

I worked in a call centre when i was 18, you started working for the agency then when u had worked there a while you could apply for a permanent position.  I did and got the job but the agency kept paying me.  I kept quiet didnt tell anyone...not even my mum!  it was awesome, a few months later the payments stopped.  I said nothing and nobody asked me.  I left the job before i went to uni and the day i left my team leader said "you owe me a pint" i said whys that then he said "it was me that kept putting in time sheets for you", i gave him 100 sheets and every1 is happy!  immoral maybe, but i worked for a company that charges 30% apr on its store cards!

When I got to work I contacted the pay office and declared the overpayment. They will take it back next month. They put it down to a human error. I thought the payroll was all electronic as well:) Maybe my karma will be good and I'll win some poker tonight.
