A stupid choice by Chapple Hyam in my opinion...almost every single Derby winner has been beaten in the Eclipse (Motivator also couldn't do it)..and all of them at odds on..this is a good time to lay Authorized off.
he ain't gonna win...so also find something to back in the race :)

Why do Derby winners do so badly in the Eclipse?

good question.

The Eclipse is shorter than the derby..but that can't be the reason as most (if not all) derby winners have won over shorter).
the Derby is a hard race..no matter how easy you win it it seems to take a lot out of the horse.

Also..and this is the big one..The Derby is run by 3YO's..the Eclipse will be the first time they take on the older (and ussually top class) horses..a 4YO is simply more mature than a 3YO and more battle hardened.

A 4YO colt is more mature and probably more battle hardened than a 3YO colt which is why the 3YO gets about 10lbs from the older horses, but most good judges agree that the 3YO's have the better of this allowance by the end of June.

I have no real opinion here other than that Authorised looked to me like the best Derby winner for many years.

I think the older horses around this year at 10 fulongs are, at best, moderate.

Notnowcato v Authorized? I know where my money would be ;)

no doubt that he's by a mile the best 3YO this year and looked very impressive..but I also reckon this was a fairly weak derby judging by the standard of the other horses.

The Eclipse should be a good race but I don't get why Chapple-Hyam wants to go to the eclipse and not go for the Irish Derby. the field for this years Eclipse actually looks pretty decent and Authorised has hyet to tackle opposition of this quality.

and indeed..if it was a HU between notnowcato and authorised I'd go with authorised aswell..notnowcato is still a listed horse IMO. but...

George washington (expected to go), Dylan Thomas, Red Rocks, Sir Percy, Sixties Icon? That's a different kettle of fish.

Good shout mate, I like ststas when it comes to betting and everything suggested Authorised wouldn't win this.  I nver laid it but I never backed it I instead went with George!  oops!

I think an extra furlong GW nails both of them.  I fear though that GW has forgotten what its like to come first (pardon the terrible pun)  :)

I think the mistake was more riding tactics than placement.

riding tactics were shocking. It cost notnowcato about 6 lenghts to go over to the other side, he still beat them by a neck. We all know notnowcato is a decent horse but not as classy as GW or Authorised and, let's say they are 5 lenghts better than he is...and I hink I'm being generous on notnowcato...that means the ground on the other side gave Notnowcato an 11 and 1/2 lenghts advantage. Like John Francombe said..it's a disgrace jockeys and trainers who go for a 200k prize don't bother walking the entire track or even look up at the board in the jockey room.

Made me a nice bit of dosh though...I even got to lay it off at 1-2 on :)
