Title: Pair of Aces Post by: Graham C on October 11, 2005, 11:00:09 PM is it fair to say that you should be betting big time prior to the flop on a pair of aces?
I seem to lose out making lame calls prior to the flop then getting caught out by 2 pairs (not that I always get pocket aces of course) I'm just annoyed at my newbieness sometimes Title: Re: Pair of Aces Post by: jezza777 on October 11, 2005, 11:08:57 PM well it depends , the important thing to know is that the more people in the pot the less chance you have of winning . So it is usually a good idea to raise or reraise with them preflop to hopefully get it heads up or just 2 callers. If you are 1st or early to act though you can limp with them and hope for a raise so you can reraise. if you do limp in though and see a multiway pot you have to be prepared to lay them down against a co-ordinated board or if there is a lot of action.
just my thoughts for what they are worth good luck Title: Re: Pair of Aces Post by: Graham C on October 11, 2005, 11:10:13 PM cheers
its just frustrating sometimes >:( Title: Re: Pair of Aces Post by: TightEnd on October 11, 2005, 11:13:39 PM you've got to raise most of the time to thin the number of players down, in a tournament situation. AA is 88% favourite vs 1 random hand, but that %age falls away proportionately with the number of extra callers you get
you can get fancy and limp, hoping a raise comes behind you and then re-raise, but there's not much deception about what you've got. Whereas with a standard raise people might put you on a wider range of hands or an outright steal if you are in late position if you limp and see a multi way pot, you must define your hand quickly by betting and BE PREPARED TO FOLD in the face of heavy action. This is crucial! good luck! Title: Re: Pair of Aces Post by: Graham C on October 11, 2005, 11:18:50 PM thanks, I'll get there
Title: Re: Pair of Aces Post by: snoopy1239 on October 11, 2005, 11:21:28 PM My theory is that it is nearly always correct to raise because if someone has a hand that will raise after you've limped in, then you'll probably get action from them anyhow.
Title: Re: Pair of Aces Post by: jezza777 on October 11, 2005, 11:33:36 PM See you point snoopy but one of the benefits of limping is from early is that if u get a raise from say seat 6 and a call from the cutoff and bb then you can really push the boat out hopefully still get one caller and the pot is swollen from the other 2 calls. Worse case senario all 3 call but you are still a favourite to win the hand v 3 players. just my opinion
Title: Re: Pair of Aces Post by: The Baron on October 12, 2005, 01:26:40 AM If you are playing pot limit, sometimes the early position limp works best as Mr End explains. In NL just raise straight off if you are unsure.

In fact I can't remember the last time I saw, after an utg limper, a raiser and then two callers. Lovely if it happens, but so rare it shouldn't really be taken into consideration. Reasons to go back to Yoda: (i) He's a better likeness. :D ;) (ii) As a former student of recent years, the whaky backy is more appropriate (iii) I'm the only one here who is on a par with the Fonze with reagrds to coolness. The Fonz, the king of cool, would be a better poker player IMO. The Fonz could theoretically go blonde. Yoda has no hair.
