I'm currently in Vegas.. There are plenty of sites that I can't access out here (Betfair, neteller)

I was thinking about using an IP masker so I can access them..

Has anyone any experience with them? How well do they work? Do they affect the running of your computer? Any advice as to which one to use?

Any advice/thoughts appreciated.

Would a proxy server do the job?  There's plenty around you should be able to google one easy enough.

are a couple if you get stuck, not sure what they are like but I guess they all do what they are supposed to.

Personally, I'd be very leery about using a 3rd party proxy/VPN for financial stuff.

I have a PC at home turned on 24/7 and VPN into that when I'm overseas. If you're on ADSL over here you can replace your modem with a VPN-capable router (Vigor are a good make that support VPN) and do away with the need for the always-on PC.

It depends what you mean Keith.  If you mean browsing in a web browser their are online services such as http://proxify.com  who provide a limited service for free. There are also numerous constantly updating lists of free http proxies such as http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html - just google "Proxy List".  These are of variable reliabilty and unknown security.  If you want something with known reliability and security you may have to pay for it.

I remote desktop to my own PC too. But it certainly isn't fast enough to play poker on - well just about. Also, if you connect using remote desktop then the data isn't encrypted. Not sure about VPN data, but when you connect to online banking etc you have that secure link from you PC to the banking site, it's no good sending you passwords etc to the 1st PC un-encrypted (like I do all the time with remote desktop  ;djinn;).

PS, can't help with proxies or IP masking. Tried to use a free proxy a few times for poker but with no luck, just for port 80 traffic I think.

Can you not play on a site that you can connect to... there must be 1 or 2 !

It's Royal Ascot next week... and I want to play!!!

The message I get when I try to log on to Betfair is: "Our software detects you may be accessing the Betfair website from a country that Betfair does not accept bets from."

To circumnavigate this do I need an IP masker or a proxy server?

You could use a proxy service - Google lists hundreds. I wouldn't trust them though.

https://www.steganos.com/uk/products/home-office/internet-anonym-vpn/purchase/ looks OK. £9 a month gets you VPN software that will route all your traffic via their servers. It looks like the servers are in Germany so as long as Betfair don't have a strop on with them too, you should be OK.

Indeed. Which is why I don't use remote desktop to play poker - I run VPN server software on the home PC and just route all my laptop traffic via that.

A couple of years back I was stuck getting home when I was supposed to be playing a $1500 entry online tournament. Pocket PC connnected to the net via Bluetooth to mobile phone and GPRS, using www.logmein.com to remotely control a home PC running the table in mini-view.

Only time I've said LOL! out loud on a train...

You could set Keith an account up on your VPN.

I did think of that - and you're probalby right about the PMs - but he doesn't know me from Adam so didn't want to come forward and offer to route all his Betfair traffic via my little network  ;)

He'd probably be able to print out rude messages on your printer too.
