Title: O/T - computer problem
Post by: Triple X on October 12, 2005, 11:19:58 AM
Bit of an off topic one here - but i have an annoying computer problem

I have Windows XP so when you turn on you get a log-in page with your name.  You then click on the name and it takes you to the desktop.

However, on that log-in page below my name it says 17 unread e-mail messgaes which doesn't relate to my outlook but to my various hotmail accounts.

This is all very annoying.  is there a way i can stop this so that hotmail is not linked to the log-in page.  Shouldnt really have anything to do with it should it.

Any advice from any experts out there would be greatly appreciated

I had this problem once, and it weren't even my emails, it were my exes and my eldest sons.

Check on your account settings to see if you have registered your other email accounts on there, failing that take the password off the account and it will take you straight to your desktop!

I can't double check this at the mo, although we have XP at work, it's is on NT.

Trace

P.S.  If none of that works remind me to have a play when I get home and I will suss it for you.

XP can only get that info from Outlook, not from Hotmail itself.  How  many email Accounts have you got configured in OE ?  It could be one you haven't used for a while that has unread mail sat in it.

I beg to differ - when it happened to me it was my Ex's and my sons hotmail accounts.

Are you using MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger?

If it is Windows Messenger, then XP will be picking it up from their - I got so sick of Windows Messenger signing me in that I disabled it.

OK, I bow to your begging trace  ;)  I don't use Hotmail so it couldn't do that to me, and you are correct about it being able to use messenger ..

Not often am I wrong when it come's to PC probs, but Windows Messenger is a pain in the ...........  BUT I will be the first to admit it when something gets me stumped.

I shouldn't complain really tho - it's all I can use at work!

Agreed Trace, It isn't just outlook express. I have NEVER used OE (as it's rubbish!) and use to get this problem when others used my pc and had been on Hotmail, but not read all their messages. The only real way round it, as you say, is to not use the logon screen. Quite easy to remove and unless you absolutly need to have multiple accounts, I would recommend against having it there at all.

And on that note, Jane will now explain how to do all that, cos without my PC in front of me, I'll be buggered if I can remember this one off the top of my head!   lol

thanks guys and gals - the reason it must only show my hotmail emails is that my microsoft outlook e-mails arent unread - its only the hotmail ones from silly accounts that i dont even bother looking at.

I would like to set my message expiry as owner showed to 0 days but cant work out where to find it!!

OK this is a long shot, but I think if you remove those email addresses from the Messenger log in (MSN or Windows one), it should stop reading that there is unread mail.

But again  (Gawd I'm useless  lol), I can't remember how/where without being in front of my PC.

Triple X, you need to edit the registry to make those changes.  Have you done this before ?  Use regedit and navigate to the registry key in the link.

If you are not used to editing your registry you need to be careful as you can do serious harm to your comp !  ;D

I'm not sure that that will help Trace though I may be wrong, Triple, if you don't need to use the logon screen, simple change your setting under user accounts in the Control panel, remove the password if you have one, and there should also be a setting for going straigh to the desktop.

Sorry not to go into more detail right now, but I'm running on the late side of getting to Uni  :o

OMG Owner, if he has never done it before, now is not the time to start!! Don't muck with the registry unless you KNOW what you are doing!!!!

No need to do that anyway, just bypass the screen completely
