Title: Bolton Poker 6 - Latest News
Post by: Jamier-Host on June 17, 2007, 03:45:03 PM
From a starting field of 72 players (12 x six handed tables) we now have started Day 2 with the twelve table winners from Day 1.

For those of you who are not aware the Poker 6 is a combined format event which starts as a shootout on Day 1 and become a regular short-handed multi table tournament on Day 2.  Sponsors Blue Square are adding a total of £21,000 to the event which includes a consolation tournament for all those players who are knocked out on Day 1.

Amongst the starters yesterday were Liam Flood, Ash Hussain, Lucy Rokach, Kevin O'Connell, Matt Tyler, Kevin O'Leary, Mickey Wernick, Jonny Hewston, Mick Fletcher, and last years winner (and fellow Blondite) Steve Read.

The following table winners have already locked up £2,000 and play has just resumed for the lions share of the prize money:

Jim Reid (The quickest table of the afternoon that also included Jonny Hewston and Lucy Rokach)
Kevin O'Connell (Dominated a table inlcuding 2006 European No.1 Ash Hussain)
Ramazanali Abbassi
John Sims
Mark Emery
Balvinder Nijjar (Blue Square online qualifier whose table included Ben Vinson and Malcom Muskett)
Chris Cancelliere
Matt Tyler (Beat Alan McLean heads up on a table that also included Paul King and Chris Bruce)
Carol Cotterill (Blue Square online qualifier and low stakes Walsall regular beat O'Leary after a marathon heads up battle)
Lee Atherton (Blue Square online qualifier)
Danielle Allen (Lovejoy's new lady - beat Mick Fletcher heads up after also outlasting Mickey Wernick and Liam Flood)
Dave Smith (The GUKPT Leg 5 Winner beat Womble heads up as well as reigning champ Steve Read)

We will add some (occasional) updates throughout this afternoon to let you know how these 12 are getting on as well as all those involved in the Grosvenor Plate which effectively has £12,000 added to the prize pool by Blue Square.

Due to technical problems (Jon broke the power cable for his laptop!) we are unfortunately unable to bring a full live update.

The Grosvenor Plate is now underway with 45 of the 60 players who were eligible for a free entry being joined by 33 direct buy-ins to make a field of 78 for this great value event.  Blue Square have effectively added £7,500 to this £100 tournament on top of buying in the 45 Poker 6 Day 1 casualties.

There are still 12 players remaining in the main event where all players started with 36,000 chips and blinds of 100/200.  We are now on level 3 at 300/600.

Kevin O'Connell is short stacked having lost a big chunk of chips to Matt Tyler with 77 v 99.

Short stacked Jim Reid who had lost most of his stack to Carol Cotterill was all in preflop with Ad Td v the Ks Kd of Chris Cancelliere and hit a flush on a 3d Ts 6d 3s Jd board to double up.

More news to follow......

A big call by Lee Atherton who won his seat by winning the May Blue Square League.

On a board of A T 9 7 Kevin O'Connell moves all in.  Lee stands up, clearly agonized by the decision.  Kev tells him he's off to have a fag while he thinks about it and several minutes later he does make the call with 88.

Kevin is on a bluff with only QJ and despite shouting for an extra 8 it does not happen and he is down to very few chips.

In the next few hands Kevin takes some blinds by moving all in uncontested and even manages to double up with K7 v AJ.  When he finally picks up a hand though he runs into another and his AK fails to outrace the 77 of John Simms.

11th place for Kevin O'Connell

Jamie, who finished 12th, if Kevin O'Connell finished 11th?

On the other table the ladies are taking over.

Chris Cancelliere has already bitten the dust taking 12th place and Danielle Allen has just despatched Jim Reid to take what looks like a pretty healthy chip lead on the table.

She held AA v QT and I'm pretty sure the money went in after they saw the T 2 9 flop.  A four and deuce on the turn and river were no help for Jim and so he departs in 10th place.

Just so you know these are the current table line ups:

Table 1

Carol Cotterill
Danielle Allen
Mark Emery
Balvinder Nijjar

Table 2

Ramazanali Abbassi
Dave Smith
Matt Tyler
John Simms
Lee Atherton

When we get down to 7 the tables will be combined until we lose one more player and reach the official final table where the prize money kicks in.

I've just had a phone call from someone in Bolton, they are down to 7.

Yes, they are down to 7 now and have gone on their dinner break. John Simms, who took out Kevin O 'Connell went in 9th, having apparently gone on tilt.

Balvinder Nijjar was out in 8th after pushing on a Q high flop with Q-9. Danielle called instantly withe aces.

The chip counts of the remianing players are:

Danielle Allen - 79,400
Mark Emery - 74,200
Dave Smith - 73,900
Carol Cotterill - 62,400
Lee Atherton - 59,800
Ramazalini Abbassi - 58,500
Matt Tyler - 24,100

Play resumes after a 50 min dinner break in which a chinese buffet is being served.

1st = £31,680 (plus £4,000 added by Blue Square) (33%)
2nd = £21,120 (22%)
3rd = £14,400 (15%)
4th = £11,520 (12%)
5th = £9,600 (10%)
6th = £7,680 (8%)

Snoopy, those figures were based on 144 players paying £1000 to enter. As there were only 72, I worked out the prize money to be:

1st = £15,840 (Plus £4,000 added by Blue Square)
2nd = £10,560
3rd = £7,200
4th = £5,760
5th = £4,800
6th = £3,840

This is on top of the original £2,000 each player received yesterday for winning their tables.

If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong, but I think thats probably going to be the prize money.

And my money would be on Danielle Allen to win :D

I see, sorry, I assumed they had a full field. Shame that only 72 made it.

Well I was going to report that Matt was out but he has shown how slow I am today by beating me to it himself!

Well played Matt.

We also now have the 6th place finisher confirmed - GUKPT Brighton winner Dave Smith.

He lost practically all his chips in a massive pot against Danielle when her AK prevailed over his AJ.

A couple of hands later Lee Atherton finished him off with A9 v K6.

And just a couple of hands later Lee makes a great pass when confronted with an all in reraise from Ramazalini.

After doing the whole stand up, sit down procedure along with asking if his opponent wants a call and if he'll show if he passes the AQ finally gets chucked away face up.

He would have been in a lot of trouble against AK had he gone for it.....

Well played that man.

Another update from Bolton:

Down to 4, Carol Cotterill finishing 5th. Chips are pretty much even apart from one short stack who is on approximately 50k whilst the other 3 are on about 140-150k each.

A marathon heads up encounter - 2 hours 45 mins long, but anyway, it's over now and we have a winner...

Congratulations to Lee Atherton who is the 2007 Poker 6 Champion, winning £17,840 plus an additional £4,000 from Blue Square.

A full report of the event will be posted on the Poker 6 website tomorrow.

Any idea why this was only half full?

There were over 90 last year, and the capacity was increased from 108 to 144 in anticipation of more players. We heard nothing but good things about last year's event, about how it was something different from the usual festivals and yet attendence was down.

Title: Re: Bolton Poker 6 - Latest News

I think a combination of factors:

  • Clash with WSOP must account for a good 20 players capable of pulling up a £1,000 buy in
  • Clash with Gala event in Bournemouth which kept a few more players down south
  • Online rebuy problems - Playtech issue with rebuys at zero chips only limits online packages (being fixed v.soon!)
  • GUKPT - The tour has been heavily marketed and extremely successful causing the Poker 6 to be somewhat overshadowed
  • Flushie not making the trip - according to a poll, lifting the easy cash off James is more attractive even than Blue Square adding to the prize pool

So there you have it.  Despite the slightly lower than anticipated turnout though the event was extremely well received once again, and those who did make the trip got a great structure and tremendous added value - not to mention a Blue Square stress ball.

:)

I'd be 95% confident of us running the event again next year and will be expecting a queue!

Agree with most of that, & I hope it continues, especially as they add money.

Clashing with Fathers Day was another negative, but the main problem I think is that there are so many high buy-in Events these days, & a goodly portion of the players on the circuit are hurting financially. Supply & Demand will have it's wicked way, as always.

Not like the old days when they would have the fish to themselves - now the internet hotshots turn up and take all their monies, leaving slim pickings for the old guard.

Lee Alfiesdad Atherton here....
Thanks very much for that comment Matt....seem to draw you like a magnet on my live appearances and everytime its been an absolute pleasure. Very impressed with the 77 read to boot mate!
Obviously delighted to get the live breakthrough, it meant a hell of alot to me to get my hands on that trophy as the length of the heads up should tell !

Ive really got to hand it to the runner up Mark Emery........i really could not have wished to spend a marathon battle with a nicer happy go lucky sort of guy (would imagine that attitude contributed greatly to his result, as i believe hes only been playing 18 months.....he should have fell over, he was that laid back!)
I can honestly say, i was owed alot of luck live and unfortuntately Mark was on the receiving end a couple of times (albeit busting my rockets to win the tourney aswell) but he took it superbly and has my full respect.

This tourney is a cracker, hence me making a rare direct buyin (id been pipped in the bsq league, despite jamies earlier post, but decided this was the perfect structure for my game) it was superbly run and i would like to thank Jon, Jamie and all at bsq, and all the staff at Grosvenor. Thanks also for the support Byrney.
The day had started perfectly with my adorable Alfie Atherton and wonderfully understanding wife Emm and finished with a trophy ill always treasure.

Hope to be posting a similar post again in the near future!
