Title: Bank of England notes
Post by: Royal Flush on June 26, 2007, 02:27:36 PM
Why is the £50 note the largest? Surely its time to get some bigger notes.

Quite agree, fed up of having loads of £50's kicking around :D

Switzerland has a note worth about £500 - that's more like it.

They are unlikely to do it because of money laundering.  The larger the note the easier to smuggle to jurisdictions with dodgy banks and dodgy merchandise.  Apparently Spain has a huge number of €500 notes in circulation on a per capita basis and this is linked to the emigre criminals of the coastal regions.  Scotland can get away with larger notes because they aren't easily accepted anywhere but the UK.

Apparently it's because they have to send them back to Scotland and can't recycle them.  Some places won't take them at all.

BofE withdrew all notes larger than £5 during wwII as a bid to stop the germans devaluing the curency. They have never bothered re-issuing anything more than £50 AFAIK.

not sure how much demand there would be for larger notes anyway.  I rarely walk around with more than £50 in my purse.

Flushy rarely walks around with more than £50 in his purse and it didn't stop him getting robbed.

America ($100) & the UK (£50) are similar, but up here in Derbyshire, shops don't recognize the £50 note, or accept it. I had a bunch of Scottish £100 notes for a while, but only Casinos would accept them.

The biggest note in general circulatrion so far as I know is the €500, a real beauty. (Helps muggers be more productive). But it's also the world's most counterfeited note.

Notwithstanding the security issues, it would be nice to have a £250 or £500. I needed to get £4,000 from my Bank today for some business, and squeezed the wedge into my pocket, & even though it was in £50 notes, girls were asking if I was pleased to see them.

in 89 years and 6 months even electronic currency will be replaced by chips in the brain that you use to pay for your milk.

Should have snoopy on it somewhere, with his fushia or even salmon shade to boot

I think it's about time we got rid of the scruffy little £5 note and replaced it with a coin - it's barely 2 pints and therefore officially loose change.

On that note, (boom boom), perhaps we need a note for the 'buy one get one free jobbies...
