The larger the note the easier to smuggle to jurisdictions with dodgy banks and dodgy merchandise. Apparently Spain has a huge number of €500 notes in circulation on a per capita basis and this is linked to the emigre criminals of the coastal regions. Scotland can get away with larger notes because they aren't easily accepted anywhere but the UK. They have never bothered re-issuing anything more than £50 AFAIK.

I had a bunch of Scottish £100 notes for a while, but only Casinos would accept them.
The biggest note in general circulatrion so far as I know is the €500, a real beauty. (Helps muggers be more productive). But it's also the world's most counterfeited note. Notwithstanding the security issues, it would be nice to have a £250 or £500. I needed to get £4,000 from my Bank today for some business, and squeezed the wedge into my pocket, & even though it was in £50 notes, girls were asking if I was pleased to see them.
