Title: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Trace on October 14, 2005, 08:39:01 AM Had a clean licence since I passed my test at the tender age of 17!
And now I think I just got caught - bloody mobile unit. I must have been away with the fairies, 'cos I looked to see if it was parked there, and didn't see it, until I'd driven past it. 55 in a 50 I think, but I was definitely only doing 50 when I came into it's range, I got pigged off with the moron in front doing 40, so overtook them, but not sure just what speed I was doing when I got past. Today is going to be a bad day, I can feel it in my bones. Anyone know if it is just one shot they take, or do they follow your car until you're past? I needed to vent - thanks guys! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Pontecarlo on October 14, 2005, 08:56:06 AM normally trace its a couple of shots , you maybe ok with 55 though , they usually allow 10%
Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: winkie on October 14, 2005, 09:21:28 AM Hope you were doing 55 or less...
A few years ago, I was caught by a mobile camera. I was in a hire car, driving up to yorkshire for a meeting, and as usual I was late. Missed the turning off a dual carriageway and had to go upto the next junction and turn around. On the way back I got zapped by the police doing 58 in a 50mph zone. Letter came through a few weeks later. £80 fine and 3 points. Plus the added bonus of another £25 'admin charge' from the hire car company...! Apologies for this bad beat story.... Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: vampitup on October 14, 2005, 09:43:25 AM I wouldn't worry about it at the moment. I have been flashed about 8 times in the last 5 years by fixed units and sped past mobile units and have had nothing through yet. Having said that I got flashed on the M25 the other day (There is always an operating camera between J16 and J15 anti clockwise everyone!) so no doubt will be getting one through my letterbox having said that!
As for the admin fee from the hire company, I would have told them where to go! If they start creating, pay them in pennies! Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: TightEnd on October 14, 2005, 09:49:03 AM Anything over 10% above the limit and expect £60 and 3 points
You must declare this to your insurance compnay when you renew (cos if you don't, trying to save money, then you have an accident, and the insurance company finds out they can void the policy in the small print..I know, my best mate tried it and got into problems) the camera won't follow you, it's one/two zap(s) and then onto the next victim Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Trace on October 14, 2005, 09:54:55 AM OOOOOOOOOO there's hope yet then?
I still can't believe I did it, I looked for the darn thing and didn't see it - maybe I need to wake up a little bit more in a morning before getting in the car! lol Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! I pass the same 30mph camera every day, twice a day firstly at about 6.30am, then at 6.30 in the evening..... A few weeks ago in the morning I was chuckling to something on the radio and thinking about something else when...FLASH!.....you feel like a complete plonker I was doing 34 in a 30 and of course the penalty points arrived in due course Now, to introduce a note of controversy. I've done 34mph at 6.30am...this carries the same magnitude of fine/points as a far more serious offence of say doing it outside a school at 8.45am, which I can honestly say I've never done... in this sense I do resent the blanket way these rules are applied and regard them as little more than a money making scheme for the authorities Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! That's so true. Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Trace on October 14, 2005, 10:11:08 AM No Ange!
It's just about to get worse! Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Decider on October 14, 2005, 11:10:06 AM Hello,
Rule of thumb is 10% + 2mph for a prosecution I believe. Better to be safe than sorry though! Cheers, Eoan Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! they can only give you points if you admit it was you ;D Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Nem on October 14, 2005, 12:16:48 PM If they don't have a frontal photo of your car, you could say that your distant cousin from India was driving the car, unfortunately he/she has just gone back to India (amazing) here is his/her address in India, take it up with him/her
I have been told this works everytime ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Dewi_cool on October 14, 2005, 12:50:35 PM I was in glasgow yesterday and using sat nav, lady told me to turn left, I turn left, pedestrian only area, with a police van in the lay by, on the spot fine £30. Funny thing was, just been in a meeting about transport compliance.
I agree tho the norm is 10% + 2 so u should be ok Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Bongo on October 14, 2005, 01:31:38 PM Also remember the speedo in yoru car will overread (ie say you are going faster than you are) so at 55 you should be ok.
I read a story on another forum about a guy who had his car vandalised (it is looking like it might be a write off now) along with 5-6 others in a station car park. The police stated that they didn't have time to check the CCTV footage. And they wonder why the average motorist has no faith in them. Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: ariston on October 14, 2005, 01:42:07 PM The not admitting you were driving loophole has been closed. They can now give the points to the registered owner if you will not admit who was driving. As someone who has lost his license twice down to speeding (younger and more foolish days) I can tell you not to try this trick. However if you "forget" to sign the summonse when it arrives I believe ahem there is sod all they can do to you- also you are not yet legally obliged to sign a caution that arrives through the post (this loophole will be closed soon no doubt)
Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: dan on October 14, 2005, 02:06:43 PM my father in law is an ex copper /:-| and he said 10%+2 is spot on and also like ariston said if you are the registerted owner of the car, if somebody else doesnt own up to driving you are ultimately responsible. an example of this was when 1 of our work vans was caught by a speed camara nobody owned up to driving it and the office manager had to take the points.( >:( >:( that was his face)

Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Trace on October 14, 2005, 03:29:13 PM Thanks for this guys, all I can say is it was the start of what has turned out to be a VERY bad day. (Including being hauled up in front of Line Manager on Monday for reducing the "boss" to tears!!! All I can say is she musta mended and turned on her tap at just the right time!)
I'll take the points and the fine, serves me right for not concentrating, and getting pigged off with the idiot in front. At least I wasn't doing 70 down there which is what I used to do before they installed cameras and mobile units.... Incidentally there were two Gatso's on this stretch of road, facing in either direction, someone chopped the head off one and the other had recently been set alight. lmao For those of you that travel to Preston from the Blackpool/Lytham direction, please be warned that the mobile unit sits on the opposite side of the road facing the Blackpool direction just outside the first set of traffic lights adjacent to all the car salesrooms. Perfectly placed for catching idiots like me that should know better. I'll let you know if I get done or not. T Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: JustJo on October 14, 2005, 03:55:22 PM I heard a corker on the radio this morning (anyone in Manchester buy the MEN, it's on the front page apparently). A couple were done twice by the same camera and instead of paying the £120 fine and getting 3 points each, they made up a bulgarian guy and said he was driving. They then took this one step further by the Mrs of the couple going to Bulgaria to send a postcard from said made up guy!! She apparently made the mistake of writing the card as if it was from her......they got a £4000 fine and a nice criminal record to boot. >:? >:? >:?

Post by: tikay on October 14, 2005, 04:52:36 PM When I was working (proper working) I drove 80,000 to 100,000 miles a year. A few speeding convictions are inevitable at that mileage, even if you are "steady". So I always seemed to have 6 points on my licence. I came out of Gala Notts one day in April 2004, it was 4.35am, on a deserted A610, & got caught by one of those cameras that time you between two specific points (not one that flashes). The very next day - the "saturday morning after Giood Friday" - I apparently repeated the trick. Two weeks later, two letters in the same post. 38 in a 30 at 04.35, & 37 in a 30 at 04.55. Went to court, this should be easy-peasy, pleaded guilty, but used the time of day the offence was committed as mitigation. 7 days, 21 days, maybe a month at worst was my expectation. I never engaged a slocitor, I had nothing to hide, the facts spioke for themselves. "Tell us why we should not ban you for 6 months" boomed the magistrate. Bla bla bla. Pleae exuse us while we discuss this, they said. I returned 20 minutes later - banned for 6 months. It seems it's 6 months or nothing. If I could have proven "exceptional hardship - such as loss of my job - they would have banned me for a lesser period. I did try that tack, but they said I could afford to hire a cheuffeur. Two morals to that story. Don't speed at ANY time. The law does not differentiate between 0430 am (when it's, arguably, safe) & 4.30pm - when it's patently NOT. Engage a solicitor - a solicitor WOULD have got me off, for sure. Maybe 14 or 21 days, but better thsn 6 months. 6 months was, I warn you, sheer hell. Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: ariston on October 14, 2005, 05:25:48 PM I have lost my license twice. When I was 22 and a bit of a boy racer type I managed to get to 22 points before I ran out of excuses/loopholes and I got 28 days and a £300 fine. I was then squeeky clean for a good few years when I got stopped by an unmarked car in the back of beyond (highlands and islands of scotland) on a completely clear road. They had followed me for miles and I wrongly assumed it was another rep on his way home because it was a nice bmw 8 series. I was clocked at 100.2 mph and I again got 28 days and a £300 fine. How you got 6 months gawd only knows Tikay (and I didn't use a brief I just blagged it).

When I was 22 and a bit of a boy racer type I managed to get to 22 points before I ran out of excuses/loopholes and I got 28 days and a £300 fine. This must have been a very long time ago, cos now this is a very very very very long driving ban. Quote I was clocked at 100.2 mph and I again got 28 days and a £300 fine. How you got 6 months gawd only knows Tikay (and I didn't use a brief I just blagged it). I am very suprised that they only gave you a 28 day ban going on your previous, maybe because it was in scotland! ;D :o Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: tikay on October 14, 2005, 05:33:10 PM Ariston. How did I end up with 6 months?
1) Because that's the law these days, except in the case of exceptional hardship. 2) Because I never engaged a solicitor. Robert - am I correct on BOTH points? I know you'll agree on the 2nd point....... Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Robert HM on October 14, 2005, 05:56:04 PM I have to admit that my days of mitigating speeding convictions are a little way behind me, but when I have to go back to traffic courts I use the trusty Wilkinson's on Road Traffic Law to update myself. 6 months is not unheard of at all.
I had the "joy" of representing a famous comedian once who had been charged with Driving without Due Care and Attention on the M4 and speeding to boot, it was a Bentley and I am not sure he knew how to drive at the correct speed. He walked from the Due Care charge but got 28 day disqualification for the speeding. He could afford a chauffer.... and a helicoptor As for having a solicitor, there is usually a Duty Solicitor at Court each morning (beware if it's a pm court as he may have been long gone) but it is no longer in remit of a Duty sol to look after non-imprisonable matters but he may be amenable to a quick private matter. If you want to save your licence or keep a ban down, it would be a good idea to use a solicitor local to the court, travel times increase costs. If you are just worried about the amount of the fine, using a solicitor maybe a false economy. Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: ariston on October 14, 2005, 06:02:04 PM I got to 22 points because I pleaded exceptional hardship (can only be used once) ie I would lose my job when I was at 12 points. Next offence I pleaded exceptional hardship for my brother (my partner at the time) as he would lose his job- firm couldnt survive without me. Next offence I used the staffs hardship- they would lose their jobs. next offence I held my hands up and pleaded for leniance. I must be a reasonable blagger because I expected longer.
When I got stopped doing 100.2 I had a clean lisence (it comes back clean after a ban) and the record of the ban was wiped off completely after 4 years so no record of it shows. As far as the magistrate (or scottish equivalent) was concerned I had never been caught for speeding before and I did have a good reason for rushing home, never do it again etc. I was gutted to be banned as I had taken legal advice and was told I would probably get off with slapped wrists and big fine/many points. If you add the fact I had driven to scotland on my own it made the journey home rather twitchy ;) I behave now and have not been done since the last one (about 5 years ago that one). Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Kaibobble on October 14, 2005, 06:21:59 PM LOL same thing happen to me this week trace. I had a clean license since i passed my test and was going 57 in a 50 zone. oncoming trafic kept flashing at me (now I know to warn me) but i was too busy trying to figure out why they were flashing to notice the mobile camera.
Now I am opening every letter through the door with fear :( Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: RED-DOG on October 14, 2005, 06:27:27 PM Mine was clean for about 10 years then I was flashed twice in a week, (3 times if you count Kaibobble)
Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Ironside on October 14, 2005, 07:27:52 PM i was flashed last timei was in blackpool
as myself and another blondite trawled the town for a lap dancing club that was open some drunken female from glasgow liftedd up her skirt and asked us to "sort that for me please" i declined on health ground as i didnt know what i would catch Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Coca919 on October 14, 2005, 09:32:56 PM I've been flashed 3 times without ever receiving anything through, so I wouldn't worry too much till you actually receive it. I've been told only 1 in 10 camera's actually have film in them as their too expensive to maintain. This sounds a little high to me but still I know there's a good chance you get away with it.
Recently I think I've gone through quite a few during the day time, but not been flashed.... do they even flash during the day as I can't tell? Again nothing. Also, I went through a mobile one at about 80 on the motorway 8 weeks ago, certain this time I had no chance of getting away with it! Never got anything through though. Right, I really do need to look out for them more or I'm getting caught for sure soon! Hope you manage to get away with it ........ Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Trace on October 14, 2005, 09:33:23 PM Awww Kaibobble - that's awful.
You'll not forget that one in a hurry. If it weren't for trees separating this duel carriageway, I'm sure oncoming would be doing the same on this road too. Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Aria on October 14, 2005, 11:21:29 PM Watching some kind of east midlands news recently and I think a survey found out that in Nottingham only 1 in 5 speed cameras have film at any one time.....however we do have a dew digital ones popping up on the ringroad. And of course the times you do risk it THAT camera is always active!
About the speeding fine - hold your breath for 14days and if you havent received a noitce from the police you've escaped! :D Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!! Post by: Scottish Dave on October 15, 2005, 01:09:00 PM how about 90mph in a 50mph zone, thats what happened to me! 5 years ago.
PS its not as bad as it sounds, it wasnt in a high street etc with kids running about, it was on a motorway. The M8 to be exact, but the speed limit had been dropped to 50mph for a few hours that night, at a certain section of that motorway, and i was going nightshift, so there were exactly Zero other cars on the motorway, and i was running slightly late. I was caught, recieved 6 points and £250 fine. As i only had my licence for less than 2 years, the 6 points put me through the newbie drivers thresh-hold limit, so my licence was revoked and i was forced to re-sit my driving test, (Both Written and practical) What a hastle! I paid them up £5 per week for 50 weeks! Title: Re: OT: I think I just got caught!!!
