Title: WSOP $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha: Day 1 - At A Glance
Post by: Djinn on July 01, 2007, 04:05:18 AM
We are going to take a chance that this steep-buy-in, good structure, Championship Omaha event is going to attract yet another record crowd and provide all the action one could hope for from a Pot Limit Omaha tournament.  Plus Europeans are good at this game, so I've been told.  Coverage will start at 12pm here (8pm UK time).  The official WSOP schedule has this down as a two-dayer, but I'm not so sure...

This is the At A Glance thread - For the full interactive thread with pics, etc.:  http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=25222.0 (http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=25222.0)

Dave 'Dubai' Shallow is up to 27k after winning with 6-3-9-4 on an 8-2-5-4 9 board.

---------

Gavin Griffin is down to 10k, betting 4k on the Turn of a Qh 8c Th 7s board and calling all-in on the 3h River.

Bruno Fitoussi took the pot with Ahrt Kh 7c 9d

Table Lisandro just made an "oooh" noise like when someone gets outdrawn, and it looked like there were, in fact, no chips in front of Jeff Lisandro, just a Kh-Ks-x-x on a board of Jh Jd Kc Js.....Ad which no longer looked so good against Henning Granstad's Aspades-Ahrt-x-x.  I was just about to report one player as out, and one as having outdrawn, when I was made aware of two things:

1)  It was all-in preflop.

2)  This tournament is a Second Chance tournament, and while most players seem to have gone for the full 20,000 in chips (!) right away, some, like Lisandro, didn't, and he was all in for less than 5k.  A red chip which I thought was a card protector favoured by many of the players is in fact their 2nd chance token.

Late arrivals, or late spots:

Chip Reese
Max Pescatori
Chris Ferguson (who's found the right entry ticket and therefore his table)
Dario Minieri
Surinder Sunar
Erik Lindgren
Patrick Bueno
Sam Farha
John Juanda
Jennifer Harman
Davood Mehrmand
Johnny Lodden
Julian Gardner

And Mads Andersen, who apparently is topping the Day One chip leaders in the $1,500 NLHE which started yesterday too.  Will there be some multitabling going on later?

I saw Tony G check-calling 1,100 on a board of Aspades Jh Tc Qd.  The river brought a 9h, and Tony G checked again.  His in position opponent bet 3k, and Tony instantly announced, "Raise."  He just sat there for a minute, but eventually threw in two day-glo orange 5k chips, and his opponent passed.  He showed the 9d 9c, weirdly.  I think the other two might have been more relevant...

Dave Callaghan has used up his first set of 10k chips, beaten by two pair (tens and fives) on an 9-6-K-5-T board.

---------

Sammy Farha joins the 'take-a-decent-sized-pot' party by betting 2.4k on a board of 3s 6s 4c 4h board, then checking down the 7s River with Phil Laak.

Farha's set of fours (4d Ks Ahrt Ad) takes it down.

---------

Nice pot for Phil Laak, his set of Jacks holding up on a Jd Ks 5d 4s board against Mateyboy's 8d Ts 9s Kd, a blank 2h hitting the River.

----------

WPT final runner-upper and New Zealand pro, Kirk Morrison, is struggling with just 7.9k, his last confrontation seeing him bet 3k on an 8h 7c 4c 4s, checking the Kd River and losing to Mateyboy's 6c 5c.

Well, I guess this is the way many players dread exiting an Omaha comp, getting it in with Aces v Aces and being outdrawn in what would usually be a split pot.

A raising war pre-flop sees the Hendon Mob's Ram Vaswani get it all-in pre-flop with Ac Aspades 2h 4c against Mateyboy's Ad Ahrt 5s 4d.

Although the Qd Ts 8d Flop brought a nerve-tingling flush draw, it was the unlikely backdoor straight that did the damage, Turn and River coming 7c and 6d respectively.

Ouch.

Our ringside witness, Padraig Parkinson, added, "Most of the time it'll be a slit. If it's for a coulple of hundred in chips, you chop it, if it's for a World Title, someone always wins.

Andy Black - 12,350, looking a couple of crackers short of a barrel.

Also at his table, Davood Mehrmand (stack uncounted) and Rolf Slotboom (18,500, probably).
______________________________________

Dusk til Dawn's Michael Greco and Dubai in the current break - Dubai has, "A bowl of rice.  Say 10k."  And this is after he'd reached 50k after one level...apparently no-one else had instantly taken all 20k in chips, and he'd forced about five of them to 'rebuy.'  And then lost it.  "It's a crapshoot," comes the inevitable judgement.

Counts from Table Greco:

Bill Chen  925 (can't see a Second Chance Chip either)
Jeff Kimber  15,400
Joe Beevers  20,200
Michael Greco  18,350
Thomas Wahlroos  20,300

Big hand developed on the far table, and although I only caught the very end, I was there quick enough to witness a double elimination, Great Dane Gus Hansen and bracelet winning German Michael Keiner both being sent to the rail.

I have no idea what Gus held, but I did spot a Kh 9s 7d Aspades, which had run into a superior set of Nines on a Ks 4d 9c 8h 2s board.

Double up for shortstacked Minh Ly, who enjoyed a brief spell on High Stakes Poker. Minh was all-in with Ahrt Qd Td 6c on a Flop of 5s 6h Qs, and although I didn't catch his opponent's holding, I do recall someone shouting, "You need a Queen" as the 5c Turn came. In true pre-empting circumstances, the River brought the Qh and Minh doubled up.

They were once table neighbours, but it looks like they're rail neighbours now, both their seats vacant. Will need to confirm these exits though as there is a lot fo moving around going on.

---------

Richard Ashby is OUT. Got it in with top set on a Jack high Flop, but lost to a flush draw which cruelly arrived on the River.

---------

Danish EPT final tabler (twice) Theo Jorgensen is a gonna, he ran into trip Aces.

Dubai doubles up Marc Karam - he raised preflop and found left-hand-side neighbour Karam re-raising the pot.  It passed back round and Dave called.
Flop:  5c Qh Jc  Dubai just plonks a stack of yellow 1k chips in, Karam moves in, and he's more than easily covered.
Dubai shows:  Tc Ts 5s 4c
Marc shows:  Ad Ac 3c 4h

The turn and river are 2s Kc giving the EPT double finalist the nut flush and a stack twice as big as it was at the beginning of the hand.

Button-wielding Henning Granstad is short stacked, but just got away with betting 2,600 on a board of Ts 8s 7d Th Qc without a call - he got the five or sixway flop down to one opponent for the turn (which was checked) and bet the river - he got a fold, but also, "I know you haven't got it..."

Oh, and the Mads Andersen who was leading the $1,500 isn't this one (the one we know) it's another one: Mads Wissing Andersen.  So no multitable.

Todd Brunson  37,250
Humberto Brenes  19,350

Brian Haversen bets 6k into a board of 2d 6h 4h 9s, leaving himself just 3 or 4k behind. After a lengthy period in the think tank, Jason Lester folds, only for Brian to show him Th 3h 7h 8c.

Roy Brindley (45-50k) says, "I've been up and down up and down. I'll be all right if I can get a beer."

Meanwhile, Paul Jackson pays off last year's Main Event finalist (3rd, in fact) 2k bet on a board of 7d 6h 7c 4s 3h, Binger quickly announcing Pocket Threes for a full house.

How about this for an eclectic table!

Jeff Kimber -- 12,100
Martin Vallo -- 43,700
Dave Callaghan -- 15,700
Joe Beevers -- 23,500
Michael Greco -- 22,500
Doyle Brunson -- 48,300
Thomas Wahlroos

And if you're wondering why I've left The Eggman's count out, it's because he's stacking his chips, a 5k Turn bet followed by 11k on the River of a Kh 3d 4c 2s Qs board being enough to get his neighbour to fold... reluctantly.

1st  Jeff Lisandro -- $134,000
2nd  Terrence Chan -- $113,000
3rd  Patrik Antonius -- $100,000
4th  John Duthie -- $95,500
5th  Sam Grizzle -- $90,000
6th  Chan Ping -- $76,000
7th  'Miami' John Cernuto -- $65,000
8th  Davidson Matthew -- $61,500
9th  Fabrice Soulier -- $58,200
10th Steve Sung -- $57,300

Jeff Kimber is OUT - Short stacked JaffaCake re-raised Doyle Brunson preflop (sandwiching one caller in the middle) t0 6,200 (blinds are now 200/400).  Doyle made the call, and this left them heads up for the 6h 5h 3c flop.  It was pretty irrelevant what came on the flop, because Jeff only had 3,400 behind, which Doyle now bet out, getting an instacall.
Jeff showed:  Aspades Ad Qc 3s
Doyle showed:  Ts Td 9c 7s
Turn:  5s
River:  Th

Jeff gets up, stopping to relate the tale to Paul Jackson sitting at the table behind him.  "At least there's something for my blog," says Jeff, planning the entry How I Got Rivered By A Legend, or some such.

Paul Jackson (pictured here trying to out-dour Juha Helppi) just got paid on the river like so:
Small blind Paul had called preflop, as had Juha.  The Qc 7s 9s flop was checked to the raiser, who declined to bet, but bet the 5d turn.  Paul flat called but then quickly bet out the Ahrt river for 3,400.  His opponent took a long time before calling, and being shown the 6s 8d 5c Kh for the straight (which won).

An announcement was made in the Amazon Room during this last level - that there were 314 entries, "With 314 rebuys...36 places will be paid, with 36th place being $22,137, first prize $768,889, and everything else in between."

Some wiseguy on the table behind me shouted out, "What place does the Rio come, 3rd or 4th?"  ::)

Dave Callaghan has doubled up, but it was a close one, Thomas Whalroos the man to push him to the limit.

With just 5.5k in chips and facing a board of 7h Aspades Ts, Dave bets 2.5k only for The Eggman to put him for his remaining 3k.

EggMan = 5s Qd Ac Tc

Callaghan = Jc Ks 4d 9s

Turn = 8c

River = 9d

This leaves Wahlroos with 29,900.

Meanwhile, on another able, another Irishman (although Northern) is Marty Smith, currently struggling with 15,500 but still well in touch.

Peter Charalambous, the Londoner who I believe Jen pictured earlier, is slying high(ish) with 66k.

Meanwhile, everytime I pass Dubai, he has come chips in the middle, but it's working - he's currently sitting on (actually, sitting's the worst possible word) around 5-60k.

---------

John Kabbaj is OUT.

6 way pot on Table Dubai including Dubai himself, Kabbaj, Duthie, Ted Lawson and two mateyboys. Everyone checked the Turn and awaited the River, the board reading Kh Qd 3h 5h Aspades. Checked around to Mateyboy who pushes all-in with Th 9h for 5.9k, only to be called by Kabbaj who had Queens (although John may have been in before the River). Either way, he's a gonna.

----------

Rumour has it that Bruno Fitoussi and Phil Laak are both OUT, pretty sure about the former, but the latter will need a double check with the grapevine.

Post by: snoopy1239 on July 02, 2007, 05:29:51 AM
Michael Greco is OUT. Ran into Aces which held up.

---------

Juha Helppi is OUT.

A multi-way pot saw Juha push over the top of an early position bet (there were 2 other initial callers too, including Todd Brunson, who folded) with a rather weakish hand, but somehow found himself ahead.

Juha = 7s 8d 5s Jd

Mateyboy = Ts 6d 9c 8c

But, unfortunately for the flying Fin, the vulnerable lead was short-lasted as the board came Tc 3h Ks Ac 9s, Helppi slapping the air in frustration as he left.

----------

Stuart Fox is up to 14k after coming back from the lunch break with only 1,700. He was all-in three times and won them all.

His pre-dinner hit was a standard one, set of Kings outdrawn by a flush draw.

Dubai goes bust:

I was literally just asked for a chip count for the popular maniac, when I got to his table to see 20k in front of him which he'd just bet at Thien Phan on a flop of Qd 8h 2d.  A brief pause - then call.  Instantly Dubai announces, "All in in the dark," shoving his last 23,500 in as the 6h hits on the turn.  Thien Phan thinks for a minute and makes the call with Aspades Ad 4h Jh, while Dubai flips Kd Jd Kc Ac.  The 2s on the river looks very brick-like and Dave Shallow's dramatic run is at an end.

Hellmuth vs. Matey vs. Appleman hand:

A flop of Ac 8h 3c gets them going - looks like either Phil Hellmuth or Mickey Appleman bet, the young Matey on the button raised, and found Appleman shoving in response.  Stuck in the middle, the man with Poker Brat emblazoned across his back was clearly displeased at having this decision (the hands shoot up, "Jesus!" is invoked).  Eventually he passes leaving Matey committed to call and showing the unexpected Ahrt 4h 7c 6c.
Mickey Appleman's hand:  Kd Tc Kc 8c.
The turn:  6h
The river:  9h

The obvious flush draw missed, and Appleman is down to 44k.

Also on his table Hellmuth has 28,500 while Stuart Fox is short, holding on to 13,500 or so...

A couple of other counts:

Markus Golser  19k
Annie Duke  42k
Martin Wendt  59k

Mr. Wendt just lost a pot and kind of left the area less than delighted - it was Johnny Chan who bet out 6k on a Aspades Tc 8h flop, called by Martin.  The turn brought the 2c, and Chan bet the pot - 22,800.  Eventually, call.
River:  Qs.  Chan slowly checks, after counting out his remaining stack (around 22k).  Martin Wendt checks behind and stares at the Ad Th 4d Ks which Chan shows him for about 30 seconds before mucking his own hand and stalking off for a minute.

A quick browse around the room informs me that Iwan Jones is missing presumed lost, as is Hassin Habib. I also spotted Mark Vos in another tournament, so he's definitely pushing up the daisies. Most worryingly, however, British star Stuart Fox seems to be hiding, hopefully he's just changed seats, although he was very shortstacked.

------------

Dave Colclough is enjoying a very steady tournament, well above average whilst still staying in touch with the people at the top. Around 80k for the blonde one.

------------

As Doyle Brunson adds more chips to his ever-increasing stack with a 13k bet on a Ts 2c 3s Qc 2d board, let's take a quick look of some of the chip counts on his table:

Doyle Brunson -- 100,700
Joe Beevers -- 53,500
Dave Callaghan -- 28,000
Thomas Wahlroos -- 19,200

------------

One table down is Julian Gardner, sometimes forgotten but always a fearsome opponent in any event. He's currently 58,400.

Speaking of Julian Gardner's table, there was an odd hand between Patrick Antonius (who is chipped up to the max) and the chap in Seat 2, Mateyboy check-calling a 4k bet on an Ad 8s 9h Flop before moving all-in (virtually, he had 5k behind) for 11k on the raggy heart Turn.

The former tennis player/model thought and thought in a real calm and composed manner (the Fin barely even flinches) before making the call. However, Mayeyboy assumed it was a re-raise to put him all-in and went to turn his cards over, Antonius stopping him just in time.

"Did you see my cards?" he asked. I think Antonius answered in the negative.

River was a 5h and Mateyboy confidently chucked in his remaining 5k, which Antonius called, reluctantly.

Antonius = Kh 3h

Mateyboy = Kd Qd 2h Ahrt

Antonius still has 180k though, so not much of a dent made, more a scratch with the car keys.

While Jen kept an eye out for any big hands or amusing anecdotes, I was tapped on the shoulder by a fellow blogger, keen to report a tale of good fortune from former World Champ Joe Hachem, now on 44,000. Apparently he teased a comment out of Scotty Nguyen, the Vietnam pro asking, "What you call that for (no baby thou)?" after Joe Hachem got it in with A-J on a Jack high Flop. Well, it worked, and Hachem got that double through he'd been after.

Meanwhile, another story of woe came in the form of Sam Grizzle, who could only look on as a near 100k pot went sailing over to Robert (I think and hope) Mizrachi, the less famous of the siblings delighted to see his Tc 9s 7d 6s provoke Grizzle into mucking on an 8c Jd 7c 6h 2s board. A little dance and woohoo later (they're either best friends or worst enemies) and Grizzle was left to cry into his remaining stack, even though it's still a rather healthy 65k.

Finally, there was a chop chop on Table Elezra, the High Stakes Poker Man splitting up the spondoolies with popular Frenchman Jan Boubli after the two of them caught trip fours (both with Ace kicker) on a Ks 2h 4h Qd board. Jan was freerolling with a flush draw, but Eli survived. As a result, their counts are pretty much the same, Eli with 43,300, Jan just pipping him with 44,800.

Thomas Wahlroos is OUT -

Short-stacked, he was all-in on a Ks Tc 5d 9s 4c board against the nuts: Wc Js Ahrt 9c.  He had, "A set of Kings and a King high flush draw when the money went in."

One, two, three..."So sick."

Didn't catch the hands, but as I trundling back into the cardroom, I couldn't help but notice (1) a vacant Johnny Chan seat and (2) a Barny Boatman milling around the rail looking none too chuffed.

Fellow Brits Dave Colclough, in the meantime has jumped up to 115k in what he admits is "a bit of a rollercoaster ride".

Even then, as I departed, he took another nice little pot with a 6k to 20k re-raise on a 9s Ks Aspades 2h Kd board, his young opponent folding with a grimace.

I was going to mention Patrik Antonius and Annie Duke as players with leading stacks...

But then this enormous hand went down in which a short stack busted and Fabrice Soulier was knocked to the felt, and to give you some idea of the size of this pot - Fabrice had 160k at the beginning of the hand...

It all kicked off on the flop of 9h Th Jd - bet, raise, re-raise, Fabrice moved in with the nuts and a flush redraw - Jc Qh Kc 7h - and the gent pictured below called with Tens in his hand for a set of Tens, no redraw.  I only heard the "oooh!" in both celebration and sympathy coming from that table and Paul Jackson filled in the details.

There is a new American chip leader by a good ways with 355,000, mid-stacking, saying, "You have to excuse me, this is my first Pot Limit Omaha tournament," with Paul Jackson giving him this look:  http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=25222.msg512241#msg512241 (http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=25222.msg512241#msg512241)

The Anti-Hellmuth Association are going to love this one, the Poker Brat going barmy after being outdrawn by his table neighbour, the massage cushion even taking a pounding as Phil hurls it at his chair in disgust.

"F***ing hell," he exclaims. "Unf***ing believable."

A quick glance at the board and we see K-Q-A-2-9. There are no hands available as they've already been mucked, but Hellmuth was there to fill the world in on his misfortune...

"What a sucker. Call my raise with Ace Jack Five f***ing Three. Amatuer."

But how did he lose, I hear you cry. Well, once again, Phil provided me with free commentary...

"(To dealer) You found diamond diamond for him. Thank you, dealer! When do we change the dealer?

Lots of action during these latter stages, first Phil Hellmuth's exit, which he took semi-well.

Down to around 20,500, Hellmuth announces , "raise it up" and bets the pot.

Early position limper and Monte Carlo EPT Grand Finalist, Kristian Kjondal, makes the call after already investing 3k, clearly keen to get rid of the Poker Brat.

Hellmuth = Ac Qc Js 8s

Kjondal = Kh Ahrt Jc Ts

"I'm all-in!" he exclaims to a player on his former table.

Flop = Qd Ks Th

"Hey, we've both flopped the nuts," he observes.

Turn = 2d

River = Td

"(To player on former table) Don't worry, flopped the nuts and still lost, nothing unusual about that."

To make matters worse, Hellmuth had to pay the masseuse and hang around while she went to find some change.

Climber of the day is one Mr John Duthie of Poker Million and EPT fame. Down to just 8,500 not too long ago, the Duthster now finds himself on the enviable sum of 150k (circa). After doubling through a couple of times, he crosses swords with Tim Phan, all-in with 2h 5c Ac Ahrt vs. Qs Qh 4s Jd on a 3d 5d Jh Flop, the Kd Turn and Aspades River was enough to elicit a "Yeah, baby (apt with Scotty Nguyen next door)" from Duthie and, of course, the pot.

A couple of counts, estimated as they were being shoveled into their end-of-day bags...

Dave Colclough  96,500
Annie Duke      150,000
Martin Wendt     42,000
Dario Alioto         66,000
Joe Beevers       54,000
Patrik Antonius  210,000
Thien Phan        64,000
Scotty Nguyen   190,000
Greg Raymer      125,000
Paul Jackson       62,000
Roy Brindley      231,000

I also heard that chip-leader (probable) Kenneth Strandli just won the Norwegian Pot Limit Omaha Championship, and so was encouraged by the Norwegians for this one... thanks to Henning for the tip off that this is the man on Omaha form...
