Title: If you were Skalie now.....
Post by: Dingdell on July 16, 2007, 04:52:55 PM
If I was Skalie now I would be on the loo (a lot) and trying to breathe.....

What would you be doing? Avoiding poker? Mixing with poker players? Getting away from it all?

im Gt'd 500k ... and nice as an additional 100k would be, I would sacrifice it to keep the blonde shirt on :)

but as this is a hypothetical situation, if it ever happened in reality, i would like to think I would be of the same opinion.

and it would happily be on me mate. Last year we swapped % in every event and this year I dont go out there- poker is a game of timing and I have none lol.

chuffed to bits for him though and as he only qualified late and played day 4 I would imagine he doesnt have to many swaps out there (would be shocked if he had done 20% tbh).

I just hope he manages to get some rest before the final- I dont know if I could without getting completely banjoed. If I was him it would be rhino all day today drink myself silly and get in bed by 8 or 9 tonight and have a full alcohol induced nights sleep.

One way of looking at it is that he might be thinking that he's just won half a million dollars, and is now freerolling for the chance to win $8M and the main event title.

Place Prize
1st $8,250,000
2nd $4,840,981
3rd $3,048,025
4th $1,852,721
5th $1,255,069
6th $956,243
7th $705,229
8th $585,699
9th $525,934
10th-12th $476,926
13th-15th $429,114
16th-18th $381,302
19th-27th $333,490
28th-36th $285,678

How would u guys play this and how do you think skalie will play it?

I think I would pay fairly tight early on and avoid the other big stacks unless I have a big hand and play them fast to avoid any potential suckouts. I'd be happy so take on the shorties and my first target would be 4th for close to £1m ($1.8m). I would then unleash hell and go for it!

If I were Skalie, I wouldn't change a thing!!!  He's doing a brilliant job of it already, so no point fixing something that ain't broke.  Do whatever it takes to relax until it's time to get back in there and win it.

Title: Re: If you were Skalie now.....
Post by: boldie on July 16, 2007, 07:25:31 PM
I'd go do some dishes..that always makes me calm and relaxed..then I'd try to get a decent nights sleep.

As for how to play it?...I dunno; he's got a big stack at the final table and it's been ages since I've had one of them :) Probably just watch the table for a few rounds and then I'd decide on how to play it...but his game is what got him this far and he probably won't need to change a lot..if anything

Title: Re: If you were Skalie now.....
Post by: Dingdell on July 16, 2007, 07:26:47 PM
There is a lot of difference between 9th place and 1st - I know that's an obvious comment - but what I mean by that is the enormity of the difference in pay structure. Short stacks are going to have to make moves, do you want to double them up?

I think I would have to play it like a final table at the £50 rebuy at Luton otherwise I may not even turn up.....I would definitely be having some Bachs rescue remedy to help ease the nerves.

at the dublin ept 2006, skalie was a big chip leader with 20 runners left. he had accumulated his chips by playing his usual, hyper aggressive game. he decided to tighten up and didn't even make the final table.

it is his one regret in poker. he has sworn that he will never change his game plan again. he will play the game that got him there.

he has been sitting with these guys for days. he knows how they play. he is afraid of nobody. he loves the attention. this is his finest hour.

bring it home mate

I'd spend the day enjoying my five minutes of fame. Do all the interviews and stuff to get completely comfortable with the set up. Have a meal with a few beers and some mates and head to bed relatively early 9because I would be recoverign from the night before!) I'd aim for a good 10 hours sleep or more - either way tomorrow night wouldnt be ending before breakfast! I'd be climbing the ladder to fourth tbh. A millionaire in sterling would be nice enough then freerolling on the win! Not sure I'd want to win it - my boss would probably find out i play poker!!

I was very ante deals, BUT it would be almost impossible to refuse to "lock up" £1mill and play for the title + $3mill extra.

£1mill is defo life changing.

Any thoughts?

I know he still says this is one he would've really played differently and he was gutted when he went out ( I was there and watched him literally fall apart by the end) but there were other reasons as you know norm and I really do think he has learned a lot from that experience . He wont slow down for sure and will play his own natural game and try to take them apart. I wouldn't like to be the guy who tries to run over the " english station"  as most american forums/sites seem to be suggesting. They seem to have forgotten he made the last 100 a couple of years ago then led the cruise from start to finish coming up just short and finishing 3rd after a bad beat at the final table. Show em how its done Kal

How long ago was that?  I think if he was going to make that calculation today the figure would be nearer £2,500,000.

I agree that a million quid isn't quite enough to provide TOTAL security AND continue playing big tourneys given todays lifestyle costs...

This figure applies to my area which has a lower cost of living than big towns and cities and also excludes degenerate gamblers!
Obviously if it was tax free then you could live off the interest alone anyway for the rest of you life, i know its not quite as simple as this but even at 3-4% interest your talking 30-40K a year.

My point is, £1mill is ALOT different from £250k - £1mill = no money worries ever, whereas £250k, hmmmmmm

I am not sure what I would do if offered that deal, I dont think anyone can be unless you are in that position.

Anyway, whatever John is doing,,,, i am as envious as hell and wish it was me! lol

I will say it again, "ONE TIME!!!!" Come on Skalie m8

My old maths teacher, when asked by us lot to skive some work time off the maths lesson, worked out how much you would need from the age of 18 to live comfortably for the rest of you life and the minimum he said was 1 million quid (Tax free)

So there's my answer. Sit tight for 4th.

I was very ante deals, BUT it would be almost impossible to refuse to "lock up" £1mill and play for the title + $3mill extra.

£1mill is defo life changing.

Any thoughts?

If he wants to lock up £1 million and play for $3mill+ he could theoretically do that without any agreement form the table.  Find a bookie that will allow Skalie to lay himself at 5/1 for a million and that's exactly what position he would have.  He might have to convince the bookie that he was playing to win, but one of the poker legends out there would understand what he was doing and take the bet....???
