Title: Champions League Draw..
Post by: Suited_Jock on August 03, 2007, 11:24:31 AM
What no thread about this??

Anyway I feel the way I run in poker has manifested itself into my teams fortunes.. drawing the hardest unseeded team Spartak Moscow.. But if we're good enough to reach the last 16 we're good enough to beat this lot? right?

Rangers tie will be harder than it looks.  Crvena Zvezda were formerly known as Red Star Belgrade, and certainly no pushovers I'd imagine.

It seems all the British teams got tricky-ish ties but I hope they can all come through.

Would be a nice symmetry if Celtic get all the way through to the final in Moscow though :D.

I agree that all the British teams have the more difficult ties.  Then again, if they can't beat these teams, they aren't going to beat the teams in that they'd have to face later on.

Red Star are one of the better draws we could have got although they are probably thinking the same thing.

Don't fancy Celtics much :)

yes it was..be honest..Liverpool isn't much of a team really..fluked themselves into 4th in the league and only have one above average player in Stevie G..the rest of em would all struggle to get a shot in the first 11 at Leicester.

Getting to the final twice in three years is a fluke?  Beating the best teams in Europe on the way?

yeah but they had the easy side of the draw both times really and the odd top team they played was under performing.

and those guys are allright but not really top-class players...Maybe with some more investment and a new coach you'd get somewhere on merit instead of relying on luck.

*wonders how long kin will keep responding to what is quite clearly a wind-up.

If my team consisted of those 11 leaden hoofed clowns that were wearing blue shirts on tuesday night, I wouldnt fancy Celtic's tie either.

it's ridiculous a team that qualified for the last 16 last year and won their championship has to enter this stage of the tournament anyway , its like Patrik Antonius playing a satellite.

Nasty draw for Celtic, Spartak are half way through their season & are top of the league I believe, they also play on astroturf  ::) You really want to catch a team who are very early into their season who are trying to bed in new players & are still not upto full fitness.
The Russian league year is improving year on year due to new money being poured in, but at least we won't underestimate them as we have done in the past.

Rangers will struggle against most teams at this level but the Serbian league is dire, Red Star are nothing like the team they used to be in the days of Yugoslavia, they might not even get by the Estonian team!

Tricky one for Arsenal, no probs for Liverpool.

Rangers will struggle against most teams at this level

i dont know why celtic fans think there something special, celtic will struggle versus most teams at this level.
scott brown comes in and is instantly your best player, agree?
so by that logic the rest of the squad isnt up to scratch.
i really dont think there is much between rangers and celtic, so i think domestically it will be close.
in europe both are clearly sub standard, and so easy draws are the way forward, rangers have been really lucky, celtic really unlucky.
i actually think spartak would have fancied thier chances againt anyone even pool, arsenal, sevilla. i mean home advantage on a astro pitch

Not really sure why that comment wound you up, thought it was pretty obvious.

I didn't say Celtic were special or anything like that, I'm well aware of our limitations but we will sign at least another 2 players before the transfer window shuts.

Brown has the potential to be our best player but he hasn't even played a competitive game yet so keep telling yourselves that we're not up to scratch & we'll keep winning trophies tyvm  ;nana;

to be honest i always like it when both old firm are in the group stages, only happened once ever. i hope all brit teams get thru as britsh derbies are about the best games around, i mean who wants to see spartak, red star, toulouse or sparta prague in the daddi of all comps?not me

I'm having none of it.

If we are any good we'll pump them. We pulled Ajax out the hat in 2001 and beat them with ease.

we lost to Basle at this stage in 2002 when everyone thought going through was a formality.

We've got the hardest draw possible but Spartak are Unseeded for a reason.

Bring them on!!

p.s. The teddy's are out on their arse  ;D

At least Red Star have won it before and are current champions of their national league

As Mr Keegan would say..

I'd LOVE IT if we saw Red Star in the group stages

OK I will rise to the bait

do you really want a bet on that ?

This is the worst rangers team in living memory. Even worse than the jokers from the early 80's which included craig paterson, hugh burns, dave macpherson. Watching the game the other night was like watching football on sky plus when you slow it down. There is no pace in your team. I have seen more mobility in an 80 year old with a zimmer frame. That team the other night PASSED YOU: OFF THE PARK.

I will offer you a bet at even money that the gap at the end of this season will be even greater than last season.

I dont know what the question is, but Kirk Broadfoot and Marcus Da Beasley are not the answer.

quite funny how these threads always end up in a completely biased assesment of Rangers and Celtic..

someone who actually says Damarcus Beasley is not the answer when you are looking for pace obviously has not been paying any attention to the guy playing over the past few years, if Rangers keep him fit and in a bit of form he is a very formidable player and he'll do well for them.

Also, be honest and stop over estimating Celtic and Rangers, they will both struggle in europe as will most teams from small countries where the league isn't up to scratch with the rest in europe (unfortunatly for me this includes my beloved PSV this year. Admittedly Celtics home record in europe is nothing short of remarkable but the are still some way behind the decent teams in Europe and they, like Ajax, PSV, Rangers will always have to rely on getting a decent group which they can progress from.

You watching the same game as the rest of us laz?

And no pace? Beasley, Novo, Burke, Darcheville all have pace and Ive been led to believe Gow has pace also, in pre season we've been breaking up the park very quickly from defence so i dont think lack of pace will be a problem.

If I had a grand Id take your bet Laz, but I dont so I cant
