Title: Cost of tournament poker?
Post by: Sark79 on August 11, 2007, 12:41:26 PM
As I sat watching Dominic Dale win a brilliant match against Mark Selby just now, I began to wonder much it costs for a player such as Dale to travel the length of the country/globe playing snooker for a living.  So I have put my yummy bowl of two day old mushroom soup to one side to ask the same question regarding UK based tournament poker.

How much does it cost for a player to travel for one year playing the big UK based events?

Obviously hotels and food eat into any profit made by placing in an event, would it not be possible to travel to each  event in an old camper van and eat beans on toast?  :)

possibly if you want to gas them at the table.

LOL :D

Doesn't Red sleep in the back of his van sometimes?  I'm sure he's posted that he has before.

Yep he does, but oddly rarely smells.

yes he does and it's a good way to go I think..If I had the money to do all the travelling for a year I would be tempted to take a campervan or something like that. It'd give you the luxury of having showers and a decent bed and not have to worry about hotel expenses.

Yep, totally agree.

The problem with hotels is that if you don't make day two, you waste the price of the room, and if you do make day two, you don't get to bed until 6:30 am and they want you out at 10am

I have a nice bed in my pickup, when I wake the next day I drive to the nearest cafe or motorway services, have a wash and a shave and eat a good breakfast.

Saves me a fortune and I enjoy it. Sometimes, if I'm in a quiet spot, I open the tailgate and listen to the dawn chorus and watch the sun come up, at other times I lie there all snug in the dark with the radio on while the rain pounds on the tin roof, I can't decide which I like best.

This is what I will do if I ever get to a decent level at poker ( possibly sometime in the next 70 years or so  :D ). It makes a lot more sense than paying hotel bills

Reminds me of a holiday I had with a few lads when I was younger, sleeping in the back of a van was great and you are right Red, opening the back doors in the morning was great, tho prob just to get the 'bad air' out and some fresh air in.

I think it's the smart way to go. If you have a comfortable bed you'll be better off than you would be in 80% of all hotels

Simon Trumper wrote a brilliant, scary and honest article about this once.

In short, it costs loads:

Are there any non sponsored players who play the full UK tour?

Call me a skin flint, but when playing a 2 day comp, I often lay the seats down in my car and snuggle up.

In the morning, I have a bottle of water, soap, tootpaste to wash n brush up with, get changed in the car then into the casino.

Lets face it, as Red has said, in a 2 day comp you will not get to bed until 5-6am and have to be out by 11am - so whats the point?!?!?

I hd a fantastic bivvy-bag, ex army. I used to sleep out in it often, but the mice got into it while it was in the shed and they turned it into a keep-net. I can't find another.

He'll smell better soon... when he gets his nose fixed.

I know pete singleton told me he worked out how much it would cost to play all the tourneys at all these fetivals over europe. It wasnt far off £400,000 for entries if i remember rightly and thats not including petrol/hotel/flights/food

Surely if you're in your car, you don't really need a bivvy bag - surely any old sleeping bag or a duvet would do?

:dontask:

I reckon you need around £300,000 to do a full year in the uk with no wins.

i love the campervan idea, you could rent it out to horny players that want a hooker but dont want to take them back to the hotel.

I may do that "Mike's whores on tours" bring a couple of working girls park them in the winabego in the casino carpark every break it would have a que.

Look out Plymouth here we cum

£300k? Hmm I can't be bothered to go through the whole calendar but if you're just talking about UK this seems very steep. How many £1k comps are there each month in the UK? Not often more than 2. £100k in buyins should be easily enough for you to play every festival tourney plus other local ones.

Could a full time player not take out $600 each week from their winnings and enter a satallite to a big event?  ( I am referring to regular proven winning players )

I have never entered a satallite to a live event so I have no idea what the cost is, $600 was a guess  :D .  $600 is a lot for me, but a $5/10 or higher NL cash game player could manage this I am sure.  By doing it this way they have a chance of playing big events and not going broke.  They could scan all sites looking for a soft satallite field each week and deposit purely to play that event.

Question -  Does a satallite win cover all costs?   Is it a completely free experience ( besides the satallite entry costs ) or will a player be out of pocket even after playing a tournament with a satallite win?

There are a few who i've noticed at a lot of the GUKPT's that i've been to in a working capacity. But I'm not sure how many of these rely soley on poker for a living. For instance I know, from talking to some of the Welsh players such as Roberto Rommanello and Martyn Cavanagh that they pay their own way whenever they play the circuit, but i'm also sure they've business interests outside poker which help finance the poker.
