Title: Is it possible? Post by: ACE2M on August 12, 2007, 02:10:58 PM Is it possible to work full-time, spend time with your other half, do some other self enriching activities and be a big winning poker player?
Anyone know of one? Since the mrs moved i think my game has gone to complete shit, is there really no substitute for playing 1000's of hands, 80hrs+ a month? Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: kinboshi on August 12, 2007, 02:14:15 PM Big - not sure. But you can be a winning player.
Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: Graham C on August 12, 2007, 03:16:05 PM No, you need to put the hours in. When my missus was away for a few days, I had better results
Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: Sark79 on August 12, 2007, 04:18:10 PM How many hours on average does an internet pro play in a week? over 40 hrs?
Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: kinboshi on August 12, 2007, 04:24:44 PM It's table hours that are important as well. So 40-hours 4-tabling is obviously a lot more than 60-hours on a single table. That's assuming the win-rate doesn't suffer significantly when multi-tabling.

Post by: Nem on August 12, 2007, 04:42:25 PM Is it possible to work full-time, spend time with your other half, do some other self enriching activities and be a big winning poker player? No. Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: Longy on August 12, 2007, 05:18:29 PM How many hours on average does an internet pro play in a week? over 40 hrs? It really does vary in my experience, one week you can play close on a 100 hours. Next week its like 20, the joy of the job is you decide how long you want to play for. I think most internet pros are lazy sods and play less than you think. There are of course exceptions to this. Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: Sark79 on August 12, 2007, 05:32:32 PM Some of the well known stars players seem to play constantly. Makingmoves for example must play well over 40 hrs per week. He has an interesting story compared to other players profiled on p5s

Would I exchange it for a sunday morning .... not sure - how sad is that?! Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: kinboshi on August 12, 2007, 07:00:34 PM Nah - not sad. More to life than poker.
But great results :)up Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: TightEnd on August 12, 2007, 07:11:15 PM I honestly think it is so difficult to juggle..I would never put anything before my kids and that means I miss festival after festival, comp after comp
Add to that a "job" that I give a lot to, and my desire to maintain some balance in my life (some, and I often fail), and its tricky Do I begrudge it? no It either lengthens the date until I go skint or it reduces my earning potential! No. agreed..my game has gone to pots since I got married..and most of it has to do with spending poker time on non-poker related bollox like going out and pretending to have a life. Post by: The_nun on August 13, 2007, 02:16:38 AM I have to admit that my online results have gone way down recently due to commitments at home ..ie change of life style..I can no longer choose when to play ....but have to try and play as and when is possible really. My live reults are still good as when I get that time out I try to maximze it to my full potentioal but like I said my online is a different matter ..maybe picking at loose ends ...when i get 5 min's..which as we all are well aware is no good.

This is probably the key reason why it is very difficult to work full time / be a big winner. How many of us work all day, then, after spending time with the kids, get them to bed and try and play our best game (after being awake for 14+ hours already)? Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: M3boy on August 13, 2007, 10:25:10 AM My online results have suffered due to work committments - so I choose not to play so much online.
Live results getting better and better - but too many bubbles for my liking atm :( Title: Re: Is it possible? This is probably the key reason why it is very difficult to work full time / be a big winner. How many of us work all day, then, after spending time with the kids, get them to bed and try and play our best game (after being awake for 14+ hours already)? During 2004 & 2005 i found no problem in working full time and being a winner playing online (with the occasional girlfriend thrown in :D), sometimes it meant i changed my sleeping patterns to fit round the tournaments on Pokerstars because they were mainly geared around the US market - apart from the 8pm $50 freezeout and the 9pm $10 rebuy there wasn't much else by way of mtt action. They did have a decent $100 rebuy which kicked off at 12.30am monday morning (3 hours after big one kicked off) which meant making final table at around 5am and also they had $100 freezeouts on Wed and Fri at 4am which meant setting the alarm clock for 3.50am and playing the first 2 levels half asleep waiting for the coffee to kick in. The freezeouts were ideal because if you got knocked out in first hour you could go back to bed for another 2 hours, if you made it deep then the tournaments used to finish about 8.15-8.30 which gave me enough time to get ready and get in work for 9am. This meant that it was still possible to go out Monday, Tuesday and Saturdays with Thursday being a complete day off from poker and chilling out with mates at home. Not really played the bigger buy in tournaments recently with arrival of babymonkey but that is something i am trying to rectify now - have put some of the bankroll back into stars having pulled it out incase it was needed for extra bananas or something but now because most sites have tried to gear tournaments around the European market it is easy enough to find decent tournaments at any time in the evening so i can keep a decent sleep pattern too. Whether i can get back to making the kind of figures i did in 2004 and 2005 only time will tell :D Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: The_nun on August 13, 2007, 12:35:02 PM I also find it very hard to play online with distractions, this is something I have always had a problem with, Darren likes the TV on, I don't really do TV and I find the sound to be very disstracting, I prefer to play whilst alone with total peace and quite, which is a rarity now in our home, once we have found Stacey and Reece a new home a little normality may return and maybe I shall start playing more online again, but there's no rush much more important things to think about. But I am missing it badly.
Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: ACE2M on August 13, 2007, 01:38:50 PM lol. I have thought that for many years. I wish i had the balls and had a go at pro when i didn't have all this baggage. Title: Re: Is it possible? Post by: Graham C on August 13, 2007, 01:47:32 PM lol baggage :D

Post by: fearisthekey on August 13, 2007, 07:41:29 PM I don't think it's just the immediate distractions when playing online, it's whatever thoughts are hanging over from the workplace or whatever emotional state it's drawn you to. If I'm playing online I need peace, quiet, no distractions, and my head needs to be clear.
