Title: BT Broadband
Post by: snoopy1239 on August 12, 2007, 03:27:53 PM
Our BT Internet connection keeps cutting out, sometimes for 20 seconds, other times for a couple of minutes. Either way, it's made online poker impossible. Has anyone else encountered this problem and was there an easy way to fix it?

Have you recently changed to BT Broadband or upgraded to the 'upto' 8M service?

I think we changed to BT about 3 months ago.

We don't have a BT router.

When the connection goes, the wireless symbol on my Mac is still at full bar which I imagine suggests that it's not a router problem.

I was hoping it would pass, but it's been a week now. Terribly infuriating when playing poker.

I made the original post and still suffer from this problem.  Only way that I have found to get around an extended disconnect is to turn off/on my router.  At times it makes internet poker very frustrating.  I suspect I have a router issue but cannot get confirmation to the cause.

That's not the problem then... when first switching to / upgrading to BT's 8M broadband disconnections are quite common for a few days (usually no more than 10), as the system trys to determine the optimum speed for your line.

If you have a Sky/Sky+ box connected to the telephone line - unplug it, see if that makes a difference. My broadband falls over when it is plugged in, a common problem apparently.

Yeah, in the last week I have been getting cut off for between 20 secs and 2 mins...very infuriating. Have had Bt for years with no problems, will be making a call tomorrow!

It was fine for the first couple of month though, it's only this week it's started disconnecting.

We don't have a Sky box.

hmm. grr.  :P

I've had BT broadband for quite some time now, but last Thursday morning the 'internet' light on my home hub router was off and I couldn't connect as a result. I spent near to 2 hours on the phone to their indian call centre (despite what they may claim, basic communication is very frustrating with an overseas call centre). I was even told to get a screw driver out at one stage to gain access to the test socket within the telephone socket (didn't even realise there was such as thing!). Ultimately as they couldn't diagnose the problem, an engineer was booked for the Friday morning only for the service to miraculously restore itself around 9pm that same day?! BT reported no problems with my line, router or local exchange so god knows what the problem was. It's been fine since though.

Do a broadband line speed test using link below. I think most of you, like me who are supposedly on a 8meg upgrade are nowhere near that speed. In fact i think this site is being a bit generous with its results so you might wanna try another site aswell to compare.

My supposed BT 8MB is running at 3.4 MB.  It would be ok if BT provided an uninterrupted service!

if possible, try and find out what the max speed your router will handle is, some of the older models (like mine) dont like speeds over 7MB and will randomly reboot themselves, usually just as you pick up AA on the button.

bt are total lying knuts had a very similar prob about a month ago was 2nd in chips at final table for a $2400 package and got discoed, took 40 mins talking to some indian gentleman that was hardly understandable, finally got me back but was almost blinded away, no chance of any compensation as wasnt discoed for 2 days !!! they kept saying there was no prob anywhere with the line, but when i rang back the next day they said there was a prob.
happy ending was i did qualify via a live satalitte but that was no thanks to the lying fkers at bt

what's the difference between the speed up and speed down, and which one would  you use to measure your connection speed?

Title: Re: BT Broadband
Post by: Bongo on August 14, 2007, 01:37:18 AM
The speed up is the upload speed, or the speed at which you can send data.
The speed down is the download speed, or the speed at which you can retrieve data.

They won't be the same, the A in ADSL stands for asynchronous (i.e. different speeds).

The most relevant one to you will be the download speed, as most people will download far more than they upload.

My office BT connection went down today at about 3pm. Had to send my workers home.

BT hadn't got back to me by the time I left at 5pm. Hope it's fixed today!! It's amazing (or not, when I come to think of it) how much I rely on having a reliable internet connection in my job. Doing almost anything at work without it is impossible. (e.g. browsing blonde, playing sngs etc)... ;)

You need to upgrade your current gradings to a grading which is better before downgrading. One off payment of £84 pounds and then monthy installments of £19.60 for the next 48 months.

Ive just recently changed to B.T after this guy persuaded me on the phone      http://youtube.com/watch?v=_ekIIvfyfD8

My connection is now dying every half an hour.

I can reconnect if I reboot the router.

Any ideas?

I'm dreading the call to India, but this is silly now.

I also get the same thing which drives me mad.  I am tempted to go out and buy a new router to see if that is the problem since the power down/turn on gets me back on again which leads me to suspect a router problem.  If India is helpful please post what they say.

A new router has worked for some people I know who had problems after upgrading to the DSLMax thing - ideally you want to borrow one, or buy from somewhere that would allow you to return it, as it could be many other things.

I had a problem where the connection would keep cutting out from around 5pm until about 11pm, several engineers visited and couldn't fix it - consensus of opinion was that someone within a few miles had bought a new TV!

Eventually we got the "Special Faults Team" to come out, with some fancy line analysers (not the standard ones the engineers carry) and after many more attempts at fixing it they swapped the line... it works now.

My contract with BT Broadband expired, I renewed it and they sent me their new wireless hub which duly replaced my old router and the disconnects have disappeared.  Hopefully this will be the norm.

My PC has been going a bit slow for a while now but about a week ago my son started complaining his was going slow too (he has a much better PC than mine and has been designed for gaming). 2 days ago he could not log into the site he plays on at all and insisted it was a BT problem. So today I phone up the techies on BT, they checked the line, that was ok. I did a speed check and it came up 750ish which the guy said is good as I should getting around 512 (all of this means nothing to me btw). He said there was nothing I could do to speed it up and suggested I try changing the filters. He also gave me the number for sales and suggested I upgrade my package which would only cost a few pounds extra.

I phoned up sales and explained what the techie guy said, telling him the result of the speed test and he said you should be getting 2k so you are getting less than half what you should, this guy said there is no way to improve my connection unless I moved closer to my exchange, "Move the router you mean" I said. "No, move house" he said...very helpful !! I explained that up until a few days ago it was working fine and he suggested I upgrade my package which would make my connection faster  :dontask: OK, do that then I said. It will cost £9 extra for the first 6 months then £18 after that...gulp!!! Hold on let me see if your router is compatible....No it isnt...you will need a new router at a special price of £25.

Why do I have this nagging feeling that I have been done like a kipper !! Do I really need this if it was working perfect for my son up until a few days ago?

This does not sound right to me.  My renewing resulted in a decrease in the monthly fee and the wireless hub thrown in for nothing.  Check out the BT website and see what they are offering customers and ask them to match it for you.

I have to be honest BT have been the best provider I have had out of 4.

It depends what package you are on if you are getting over charged, IMO I cant see this happening £9 to upgrade to a higher speed does sound about ok, but dont pay for a router (if you need a wireless BT) i have a spare one, so dont pay £25.

I have been with BT for years and never had a problem with my broadband till now. I have just been checking out the website and it looks like for the same price I can get a home hub for free so I will be ringing them in the morning.

I already have a router Jizz which I bought off BT for £200 many moons ago  :D It was top of the range back then but aparently its not up to the job now  :dontask: I will keep your offer in mind tho if i do need one.
