Am thinking oif buying a macbook pro laptop as I have heard good things about them, and I like the look of it. IN order to play most poker sites im going to need the windows operations system though. I Have no idea how I would do this so just looking for some advice/tips before I buy one. Has anyone here done this successfully? How difficult was it? and have you experienced any problems since doing so, all feedback appreciated, thanks in advance,

note, really want a new laptop as the sony I have now is plagued with problems, has been since day 1 and is driving me crazy

Why a mac?  Just for the looks?

I am in thailand at the moment, and am heading to australia in about 2 weeks time, so I have to buy from a shop. If i was home I would get a dell as ive had no issues with dell computer

If you need Windows then why on earth buy a Mac?

That's a bit like saying 'I'm thinking of buying a motorbike but need space for three kids and the weekly shopping'.

By a PC laptop - job done.

You can get free pc emulator software from the microsoft site which effectively turns it into windows for the sake of running windows software.
I do know it works for poker software but whether it is reliable etc. you need someone who has actually used it.

As i mentioned im travelling and the macbook is very slim, so easy for transporting around everywhere. I, and members of my family have had store bought laptops beofre and ive never been impressed and usually start having issues relatively quickly. I was just enquiring about the ease of the process as I personally dont know anyone thats done it.

I have a little baby Macbook that runs Windows and actually it's pretty good.

You have a couple of options.

I know a few people who have it, they say it's pretty good, runs a little bit slow but shouldn't be a problem if you're just using it to play poker. Awesomely wonderful because it doesn't involve any rebooting.

Option 2 - Buy copy of Windows and download Boot Camp - http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/ (http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/) - that's what I use. It's beta software but it runs beautifully. It partitions off a chunk of your hard drive to run exclusively on Windows. Runs faster than Parallels but you have to restart your computer every time you want to switch between OSX and Windows.

I strongly urge you to avoid

Option 3 - which is download Boot Camp and do not buy a copy of Windows but get your brother to nick you one from his office and then get in trouble when it asks you for an activation key after a month, and only get away with it because the call centre guy in India hates his job so much he can't be bothered arguing with your shameless lying on the phone at 3am. That's the least good option. Although I must admit, the cheapest. :)

Yes he does, but he's thus far been too lazy to get Windows working on it, he tends to use my laptop or Jen's when we're out.

I am planning on purchasing Parallels for around £30.

I don't know how much Windows cost these days, but XP should do the job. I was advised to purchase online where it'll be a lot cheaper.

It's worth it though, once you get used to it, Macs are a lot better, but you need a few days to become accustomed rather than use it for the first time at an important live update in Monte Carlo.

If you google pc emulators there are loads and will have reviews.
Party, full tilt, pacific, pokerroom and hollywood poker all have mac software for their sites.

Oooh, debatable. Macs are full of all sorts of amazing cool stuff that you just don't realise the value of until you're using them every day.

And owning a Mac will make you smarter and more attractive.

A Macbook Pro will cost at least £1300. For no more money than that you'll be able to buy a nice Windows laptop with which you won't need to bother with partitioning/dualbooting etc.

For example, here's a laptop with the same processor, RAM, hard drive and graphics card as the Macbook Pro, yet it's £400 cheaper.

The screen spins round and folds down so you can use it as a tablet PC. 

To add to the other windows on mac options you could grab a copy of the free VMplayer from the vmware site and get yourself a windows image (give me a shout if you need one I've got a couple kicking about). As far as I can see vmware are the dogs bollox for virtualisation.

The spec on the 17" macbook pro looks better than the link u posted. Big screen is pretty important to me, is a real struggle to get 4 tables on a 15" without strianing my eyes. Am leaning towards the parralels application, as i dont fancy rebooting all the time. Thanks for all the replies, no final decision made as of yet.

A friend of mine recently bought one from the Mac Refurb store for £899, same warranty etc as a new one and you would never know it is not brand new.

We'll shortly be trying out parallels, so I can't comment on that yet, but it generally gets good reviews.
