Title: Rankings in Sport/Pastimes
Post by: MPOWER on September 03, 2007, 02:47:59 PM
Do World rankings in sport/pastimes actually mean anything.

Would you rate someone who is ranked number 1 in the world.

Do they deserve respect?

Is it hard work or luck.

Regards

Depends on the sport to be honest.

I wouldn't pick a fight with the world number one in any boxing division for starters.

I think ranking in poker is very strange and does not count for anything because of so many comps and different buy in levels.

How can you rank something that has an element of luck in it..?

Depends out of how many. I mean, if there were like, I dunno, 13,876 poker players Ranked, the # 1 would be some kind of God in my eyes, & be entitled to massive respect, & women should grant him his every whim. Would Flushy be in these Rankings, one wonders?

Flushy for God in Tikay's eyes.

It's kind of an abused term....Phil Helmuth is definitely 'Number One of All time' in his own eyes.

Sometimes you do get rare talents that just are clearly ahead of the field. Tiger Woods probably amongst his current peers.

In Windsurfing (my second love), it was definitely this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bjorn_Dunkerbeck for many years. Just untouchable.

If he were Ranked Number One, yes, of course.

it largely depends on the sport/pastime.

I would rate my chances of beating the top ranked poker player at around 100000 times greater than beating the no1 ranked chess player.

This is the reason I asked the question Tikay No1 in the World
on Poker Pages

 :respect:

2007 ProRank 2
Worldwide Tournaments with buyin of less than $1,000

Our Poker Player rankings use a very complex algorithm (Paul Samuel) and utilize 3 factors of a tournament.
Percentage of Prizepool won
Length of tournament in days
Relative strength of field based on all money finishers
For strength of field calculation we look back over the past 24 months of results to rate all players. All worldwide tournament results that are submitted to PokerPages that have the required buy-in amount (under $1,000) will qualify for ProRank 2. (Invitational events are not included )
