Title: o/t Computer network help please Post by: Graham C on September 03, 2007, 06:51:46 PM Hi :)
I have a laptop that connects to t'net via a wireless connection. The modem is plugged into my main computer. I want to be able to get files from my main computer on my laptop, and visa versa and I'm sure this can be done, but I haven't a clue what to do. I've tried setting up a network but it didn't work so I was wondering if one of you kind souls could post an idiots guide on how to do it please? Assume I haven't done anything and don't know anything please :D May all your hole cards be aces ;) Title: Re: o/t Computer network help please Post by: The_duke on September 03, 2007, 06:54:48 PM Don't have a clue but I know a man who does -- PM Shogun he's a network guru

Right click select properties and select sharing, second option. You should be able to see it thru my computer on the other comp Title: Re: o/t Computer network help please Post by: wader leg on September 03, 2007, 07:03:29 PM I had the same problem so I set up different hotmail accounts on each computer, then send the files via messenger.

I have done this in the past but a while ago now and i no longer have the setup so it is going to be vague from memory. The network is already setup assuming both computers connect to the net through the same router. As i said create a folder on each computers desktop (the reason for 2 folders is so you don't get confused with what has been exchanged etc.) and name them so as recognisable, i.e. lappy, main. I was just about to go thru it then thought microsoft would be better to tell you: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301281 Title: Re: o/t Computer network help please Post by: RichEO on September 04, 2007, 12:36:20 AM Hi :) I have a laptop that connects to t'net via a wireless connection. Doesn't make that much of a difference to setting up the network but maybe a little. Are both computers windows XP? Run the set up a home or small office network wizard on both PCs. Make sure you enable file and printer sharing and also make sure they are on the same workgroup. Then you should be able to see the PCs in my network places both PCs should be there on both PCs - their names will show up, click on them and it will open and show the shared docs folder. You can either just use these folders by dragging stuff in, or you can share other folders by right clicking on them and clicking sharing.. If you wireless network isn't secure then be careful what you share. And if it is secure, with either a WEP key or a WPA-PSK key, be aware that they can be broken easily, so if you have a particularly high security job or something, don't share the files ;) Title: Re: o/t Computer network help please Post by: Graham C on September 04, 2007, 12:43:32 AM Cheers guys, haven't had time to try again yet but will look at it tomorrow.
It's a USB cable modem which plugs to the router for me to get my wireless. Both are running Windows XP, although my main PC is on Pro and the lappy on Home. I don't exactly have a high security job, I'm not too sure many people will be that interested in the high tech world of trophies :D I half expect our trade magazine to be on Have I Got News For You :D I think my files are |
