I've got a tickly throat, a bit of a cough and I'm starting to run a temperature. What's your best remedy for stopping a cold before it gets going.

I've checked my supplies and all I've got is 2 chocolate doughnuts, 6 cans of Guiness and a packet of cheesy doritos so if it involves any of these so much the better.

2 grammes of vitamin C and zinc disolved in water every 4 hours. and hot water, honey and lemon in between.

Bin the doughnuts and the doritos and double up on the Guinness

Drink lots of water, lots and lots of water.  Go to bed and put lots of layers of covers over your bed. Sweating it out works best for me.

I read recently that a girl had an OD after using lemsip and asprin together.  She was told she almost died.  I have lost count how many times I have taken both together.  It was scary to hear that.

Dont do what I did. Eating a whole packet of Fishermans Friends in five minutes actually makes you feel worse, now there's a surprise!!

Well I've made a start on the Guiness, are you sure the doughnuts won't help they look gie tasty. Urgh I feel awful, but cheers to my manflu support group for your suggestions. Just remembered I got a bottle of wine kicking about somewhere, I'm gonna try drowning the bugger with alcohol, see how that works out. Screw it I'm going to eat the doughnuts as well.

the easy way to kill a cold is suicide but i dont recomend it

you won't be able to kill it, but i always find lempsip helps with the symptoms

I'll maybe try get some, wish i hadn't thrown a sickie the other week, means I'll have to go in tomorrow regardless

As everyone knows, there is no cure for the common cold, to catch a cold you must come into contact with a new cold causing virus but you ill never have the same cold twice.
Vitamin C in clinically tests is not proven in any way to decrease the symptoms of cold or help you get over it when you contract it.
Lemsips main active ingredient as many other "cold relievers" is paracetemol so just pop one of them instead of wasting your money. Your better off spending your money on a decongestant which targets the sinuses and doesnt pretend to kill the cold.

As sark said sweating it out is probably the most effective way of killing a cold as you increase the core temperature which takes the virus out of its optimum envirnment but in truth you have to reach fever temperatures for that to work.

So in a long winded way, just tough it out, but buy some decongestant tablets.

Lemsip, honey and whisky. Early night with lots of bedding.

My farther inlaw swears by boiling lots of lemons and drinking it all night warmed up. Does the trick 4 him but not yet worked 4 me.

Any early night with something warm inside you is your prescription.

Spot on...best cure for a cold is to go at it hammer and tong and sweat it out.

If you are really good she wont notice that the sweat dripping from your forehead is mixed with snot ;-)

Seems to be a very common problem atm.

I have suffered from it for well over a week now, came on very suddenly and after spending a day or two in bed dosed up with no effect, I have decided to "get on with life" and wait for it to pass.

Terrible in this day and age that there is no cure for a common cold/flu - I actually believe that there is a cure already! But just imagine the revenue the drug companies would loose if it ever came out! - Just read the contents of Lemsip (cost £3 ish) - its just paracetamol with a decongestant (which you can buy seperately for about £1.50)

I was ill with this last week. Got a really sore throat at work on Tuesday, took Weds and Thu off as it had reached my chest, felt better on Friday, so went in to work. However it then went back to my chest on Saturday afternoon and knocked my weekend on the head.

Moral: just stay away from work, it's unhealthy.

Is this the wrong time to write a smug post about me not having had a cold for about 3 years now?

Can't be 100% sure, but I think it's related to me cutting down my milk intake to a very small amount.  I don't eat breakfast cereal any more (which is when I had the most milk), and since I've cut down on milk I haven't had a cold and any allergies (to house dust, hayfever) have not bothered me anywhere near as much as they used to.  I still have milk in my tea, have the occasional chocolate, etc.

It could just be coincidence, but it seems to have worked for me.

From what I've read it could be to do with the mucus production.  So although I might catch a cold, I don't get any of the symptoms. 

The problem with curing the common cold is................its not common, the virus mutates so quickley that some colds are only exist in 1 or 2 people before they change again.

throat lozinges - i havent had a proper cold in about 3 years as for me it always starts with a sore throat, if i dont get rid of it then it turns into a blocked up nose then a cold then as the cold is going i get a tickly cough.

If i get rid of the sore throat however it never develops into a full cold so plenty of strepsils and soothers during the day with one lemsip before bed usually does it for me.

He had to tell you that, as you wouldn't actually know from personal experience... ;whistle;
