Title: Why do Scotland always play the same teams?
Post by: Sark79 on September 08, 2007, 08:20:57 AM
I am not a massive football fan, it is ok, but I would not threaten a taxi driver to put his foot down so I could get back in time to catch the beggining of a game.

I think Nemesis answered this for me before, however I can't find the PM.

Why is that Scotland always seem to play Latvia, Iceland, Lithuania and the Faroe Islands at football?

Does this have something to do with rankings or are we very, very lucky in the draw?

they want to try and give teams like latvia, iceland, lithuania and the faroe islands an outside chance of being able to qualify for their first big championships.........

random draws aren't they?

there was a stage where we drew Poland in five successive qualifying groups and had long runs of Moldova and Austria too

not completely - the nations are still seeded before the draw is made

Yeah the number of time England have played Poland in the recent past is remarkable.

We were drawn together in the 86 world cup and then qualifying for major championships in 90,92,94,98,00 and 06.

Seeding does drive some factors, how the hell did France and Italy end up in the same group, are Italy in the 2nd seeds for this?

Yes, Greece as champions automatically got placed in top group to try give them the easiest possible draw

Pool 1: Greece, Netherlands, Portugal, England, Czech Republic, France & Sweden
Pool 2: Germany, Croatia, Italy, Turkey, Poland, Spain & Romania

scotlands group at time of the draw had 3 teams in the worlds top 10 in it scotland wont quailfy but to still be in with a shout with 4 games to go is unbelievable

what people forget is although we are in ther fighting we have to play 3 MUCH better teams in out last 4 games

Are you saying that drawing world cup finalists Italy and France when we could have gotten Sweden and Poland instead is inconsequential.

That it is more fortunate we drew Georgia and the Faroe Islands and dodged the likes of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

England are far more lucky in their draws. They still seem to struggle to get through even though they get the easisest fo groups every time. I mean look at their group last time, Poland, Greece etc... f*cking easy, then this year they get Israel etc... and still struggle. Oan the Tartan Army, we make a group of death look easy!!!!!
