Title: Is this Chip Trick Possible???
Post by: K9sixtwo on September 13, 2007, 09:41:24 AM
Whilst playing the other night a discussion started on the possibility of a certain chip trick being possible.... I appreciate that it involves a certain grasp of Physics to appreciate it but ..... here goes ...

I ask ... Is it Possible to balance FIVE poker chips free standing one on top of the other ..... A few clarities .. The chip must be a standard round chip, it must be standing , not laid flat, a flat surface must be used , i.e. a poker table and the chips must be put one on top of the other to form a tower five high... personally I think it's impossible a good chum of mine maintains that it is do-able but I think it's potty and can't be done without resorting to glue or some such other trickery...???
Most of the other players got the hump and it resulted in a straw poll being done where opinion ,as they say, was divided on the matter

Easy.  With some of the chips I've played with they're so sticky that I reckon you could build a tower like that 5 high and then lift them all up into the air holding just the top chip.

to attempt it though you'd have to borrow at least 4 chips from a neighbour..................

Don't judge others by your own standards or experiences.

What exactly is the qestion? Is it if 5 chips can be balanced? Or is it if any human can actually do it?

As I said before, it's possible, but no person can do it. I expect with perfectly machined and balanced chips, a perfectly level table, and an extremely accurate and well programmed robotic arm - it could be done.

I suppose if it's possible in the above situation, if you had an infinite number of people trying to do it for infinity then.... it'll happen eventualy. Then with the slightest vibration, they would fall over.

Enough babbling :P

yeah but robot arms built by humans arnt that great, you'd need a robot arm built by robots for it to work

Sounds good to me. Is that how most are made anyway now? What came 1st the robot or the robot arm?

This is getting a little sad... :P

I dont think its possible with the human hands, once you get to the third chip its nearly impossible.

Well, I suppose it's one way to stack your chips:
