It depends what you are looking for, basic or luxury. We went last September and stayed in the Travel Inn Hotel on 515 W 42nd Street which is right in the heart of the Theatre district and 5 mins from times square.  The Hotel is fairly basic but the rooms are clean and big and in a great location.  It's is not a high rise hotel either so you are not always taking lifts.  We paid £121 per night (for 2) through Expedia and at the time that was a pretty good rate.

Personally if I was going back I would try and find somewhere around Greenwich Village as the Theatre district is very touristy.

I would recommend not staying at the Hotel Pennsylvania.

Have fun!

Going back a few years.. but myself & the missus stayed at the Novotel just off Times Square.

Nice hotel (think it's a 4 star jobbie), good sized room overlooking Times Square, all at a very competitive price (booked direct on the Novotel website).

Slightly strange tho, coz the hotel reception's on the 5th or 6th floor...

My wife and I stayed at the Time hotel, surprisingly just off times square. It's a smaller boutique hotel but very nice and within easy walking distance of most of the tourist sites.

I'd be more concerned about walking around Greenwich Village at night if you don't know the area.  Times Square and all the other tourist spots are loaded with police, so they'd be safe enough.  I used to work not far from there at the Four Seasons Restaurant and would take the subway home to Queens after 1 am on my own...because there were so many police around, you didn't have to worry.

Recommend the Grand Union for the budget traveller.

Kind of small and basic but clean.

Enjoy...Great city!

I stayed there a couple of years ago.. and was very disappointed. A throwback from the 1920's. Needs renovating IMO.

Also stayed at the Hilton, Times Square. This was absolutely superb. Highly recommended.
