Title: Medium pairs out of the small blind.
Post by: Tragic on September 20, 2007, 02:42:22 AM
I've been messing around recently at micro stakes NL to try and fix some leaks in my game, PT so far is showing 88 and 77 to be my biggest losing hands by a fair margin, and the only position I am down from, (and I am down significantly from it) is the Small Blind. These are my stats over 11k hands. 24.59 VPIP  17%PFR 2.34 AF and 2.7BB/100. The opponent in question is one of the few tricky ones at this level and has a 23.5VPIP and AF of 1.53 8.5% PFR winning 9.7 BB/100 over 2k hands. Should I be reraising preflop with this hand? I can't help but feel I was dead from the beginning here and I think my overall approach is pretty awful so what would you do differently, is any of the play OK?

Simole rule works for me, oop, no set, no bet with 88 and down. 99-JJ are a little trickier but i dont mind rr preflop.

Small pairs OOP (I'd include JJ) - I'm with the no set no bet.  Although you can always send out a probe bet on a low flop to see if you can take it down without opposition.  Otherwise, get in cheap, get out cheap.

I agree with the no set, no bet rule here especially oop. Position is key in NLHE cash and you should be playing v tight from the blinds.

As for the hand itself calling preflop is standard this deep but we are set mining for the implied odds it gives us. On the flop i check/call by betting out you are allowing our opponent to play perfectly by dumping overcards or even raising with them and repping an overpair. He is going nowhere with a hand that has us beat.

Im not sure what you are achieving on the turn this guys aggression means he is hardly ever floating us on the flop to bet the turn and the check raise only ever gets called by a hand that has us crushed. I fold the turn and the river against this opponent, I may well check call it down against very aggressive opponents but even then it may only to send a sign to an over aggressive regular.

on a low board like that i'd prob check call and see what he does on the turn. if they fire again release.

I think I've been getting a bit carried away tryin to play too much poker at this level is the thing. Thanks for setting me straight is certainly helping my profits at this level. Most of poker is adjusting to each specific table needed reminding ;).

the check call on the river is pretty horrifying. the only hand you beat is  Ks Aspades

to be more helpful however i check raise the flop. if he checks along it control the pot size. if he fires a continuation bet you take it down. very prepared to lay this down on the turn if he bets strong again
