Title: Live MTT Advice Post by: Rod Paradise on September 28, 2007, 11:13:07 AM On another (football) forum a mate said he was going to the Sporting Emporium in Dublin to play his first live poker (he plays online). He was asking for some advice.
This was the off the cuff advice I gave him, any one got any more? Quote Don't put your whole tourney on the line on a coin-flip (ie all-in with 10-10 when you've more than 10x the BB etc) until you HAVE to. If it's anything like the tourney I played in Dublin & the other reports I've had from Ireland, then you'll find they're very aggressive. Hold fire until you've a premium hand in the early stages. The stack & blinds structure should give you time to do this. Consider stealing the blinds from late position, only if the players you are playing into have shown they have the discipline to fold. If a table maniac is building a big stack, don't worry - you'll get your chance to relieve him of it later. If you feel yourself tilting (either playing too loose and chasing losses, or having won a few & starting to overplay) take 5 minutes, go for a piss, wash your face with cold water and calm yourself down, don't worry about missing a hand or 2. Don't assume 'they're all experts' just because they seem more relaxed, used to the game than you, there's still probably a 60% muppetry quotient among them. Keep an eye on the play (ie make sure you know it's your turn). Announce your play before you start moving chips - chips go in in one movement so as not to string bet (unless you've stated the amount - then you can count them in). Protect your cards - (especially if sitting beside the dealer)- Take something like a medal, lighter etc to sit on top of your hand so that no-one can disrupt it and get it called dead. If it's not protected the dealer can mistakenly lift it & you're out the hand, losing all chips you've already committed. Enjoy yourself! Dont get fooled by theatrics at the table, use your intuition. Just using common sense it is often not too hard to put someone on a hand.
Also when i first started - i used to get paranoid if i was behind the average chip stack say halfway through the tournamnet. Whilst we always want to be ahead of average, its not the end of the world, and enough times when you are not short stacked in terms of the BB (i.e. more than 10-15 times) dont worry about it and wait for that premium hand to hopefully double up in. I think you have it spot on - tight to begin when the guys press the suicide button, loosening up in the middle and then aggression in the latter stages. Sounds so easy doesnt it!! The irish are notoriously easy to get riled. Question their heritage and bemoan their fall from imperial rule.
Call them all mad gambling alkies. Trap with every big starting hand you get, because I will guarantee that some maniac will raise with filth. Bet your draws, because (a) they never fold and (b) you aint getting any free cards anyway. dont try to fit them to a range of starting hands - their range of hands is any two cards. damn...just given away my strategy for waterford.....
