Title: OT Technical Computer Help please
Post by: jbsc7769 on October 20, 2005, 03:58:43 PM
I have spent the last two hours trying to find out how top open a file I donwloaded. With hindsight, I should have actually come to the "Central Blonde Library" for assistance as i suspect it will be quicker. The clock starts from the post time. Lets see if we can beat 2 hours.
OK, the file name is something along the lines of hdtv-lol.r01 (although there is also R01, R02 etc etc.)
Can I view this on my DVD player? Or PC only? If so, what program will open it as I have tried ervything.

It's a rar file (form of compression, like zip) spanned across several files.

A program called WinRAR should sort you out.

Edit: It will get you the uncompressed contents which you will then have to work with.

Is this a free download like Zip? Never heard of it (not that that means a lot!) Thanks for a quicker response than even i had hoped for! Still means NOTHING to me but.....a "rar" program. Right, just what i was thinking........Can you dumb this down a little please....

dumb it down!!
ok, click the link>save to disk>open saved file and follow instructions.

http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar351.exe

when it's installed doubleclick the last file in the group (it'll be different from the others) and choose "extract to" and choose where you would like it placed.

i am sure this will come as no suprise but i think i messed this up. the first one now has a link to Quick Time as i tried to open it with that (after real player and windows failed). I found that program but it is $150 and strikes me as a little excessive......any ideas....winzip is free!

winrar is completely different to winzip, it has it's own compression method and you can only open .rar files with it.
a shareware version is above

If there are any "par" files as well, you may want to get "Quickpar"

A "par" file (with the use of quickpar) can re create any missing "rar" files or repair any corrupt ones.

Hope this helps :)

if you have associated a the file with quicktime you need to open the directory it's in with winrar!!
If you doubleclick it will open quicktime instead

OK, progress, in a funny kind of way. Most of the icons have now changed so they look like books. The last one looks different (hdtv-lol.sfv) so i clikced on it and it asked me which prgram i wantde to open it with.....
I also have one at the top which looks very different. Its icon is a computer screen with an "I" on it. simply called201.hdtv-lol
Thanks for this help guys, its appreciated.

SFV is simple file verification, simply it's a list of all files in the archive and their sizes and can be used to check you have everything.

I imagine you have it set to hide file extensions for known types, if this is the case you should be able to get the file name (including extension) by right clickong on a file and selecting properties.

Once we know what the extension is we'll be able to tell you how to view the file.

I double clicked one and can see it is Windows MEdia PLayer (which I think I can play on my DVD player, I hope).
You said the last file should look different but they all look pretty similar other than the two mentioned.....

sorry about the different looking file thingy, there was always a file with a slightly different name to the others (though still a RAR file), it was the "key" for want of a better word.
It may not use this anymore, i don't download so much these days

With WinRar you can just open any of the archives and it will extract all of them for you, no need to use a particular file.

Si Chicken

I'm sorry I only just found your PM about this.  I could have sorted you out in seconds flat.  Thanks guys for helping him, I forgot to warn him that he would end up with RAR files.   :blonde:  <<< Permanently.

BTW Si, I watched episodes 3 and 4 last night - WOW!!

5 is on its way, and I'm hoping to watch it before I leave.  I somehow don't think First Choice will hold up the plane cos I was watching Lost.  lol

Not true. WinRAR also opens ZIP (pkzip format and the extended winzip), ACE, LZH, BIN, ISO plus many more that escape my mind. WinRAR 'pwns' winzip.

If he has norton- has he tried turning the ad blocking off?

Other than that I can't think cos my head is in the clouds thinking about being in the clouds soon.

I presume he has everything set right in his profile, and that he has the option to show images checked in IE?

He could try viewing the forum with Mozilla Firefox, see if the pics show with that.

OK that's my brain worn out for a few hours now.

EVERYONE should use Firefox IMO, well it's not just my opinion. It's a known fact that 90%+ of all spyware, malware and viruses and created to get though the security holes that are rife in IE.  People just don't know enough about how to keep their systems running smoothly and all it generally takes is a little reading, or asking a few questions.

Norton.... ( ad blocking shouldn't make the pics disappear!) I used to swear by it, it is a very good piece of software but to me the resources it took up were not worth it (not to mention the cost of it), there are enough programs around to keep your system in perfect health WITHOUT paying a penny.

Another reason for the missing pics, although not my area tbh, can't the acceleration on the graphics card produce this problem?? not being set correctly? I have come across this before, but for the life of me I can't remember off the top of my head what caused it. Trace's point about allowing images to be shown is also a good place to check.

Good luck with it  :)up

2 small points.
IE will always attract the most abuse from spotty teenagers writing code in their bedrooms because of it's proliference (sp?)
Firefox damn near destroyed my computer!!!
nothing against it of for IE, just killed nearly all my programs (anything running when it flipped got toasted)

When I installed FireFox, it started messing up my installation logs, then it started my automatic updates, in turn I had to restore my computer, I will never use firefox again.

Does anyone know where I can download or switch on 'Auto-refresh' option for firefox?

Title: Re: OT Technical Computer Help please
Post by: Bongo on October 21, 2005, 12:48:54 PM
Just found this auto refresh extension:

https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=115

Never used it so I don't know if it is any good.

Norton really seems to be going down hill more and more recently, It's not at the stage where I'd recommend getting rid of it but I wouldn't renew a subscription if I had the choice.

For antivirus I use Nod32, it costs around £20 a year and is damn good (even if no one has ever heard of it). It consistently performs best in industry tests for detection rates and yet it still manages to perform scans very fast and use little resources.

Quote from: Virus Bulletin.
For more than seven years, NOD32 remains the  only antivirus system in the world that has not missed any 'In the Wild' virus in the prestigious tests performed by the international authority on virus prevention, recognition and removal
