Title: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: Dingdell on October 01, 2007, 02:49:41 PM There are some players who lack in the personal hygiene department.
I'm sure there are times when I have come straight from work and not smelt quite as fresh as I would like so I guess everyone can have their off days but I do carry deoderant in the car for those times when I can't be sure I'm smelling rose like. The same goes for the breath - I chewed gum last night as I wasn't sure. However there are some players who are always smelly and it makes playing with them unpleasant to say the least. I was discussing this with a player on Friday and he suggested that it could be tactical, a sort of tilt mechanism. Question 1. As a woman I would want to be told, as a guy does it really matter - do poker players really care if they smell at the table? Question 2. What if its a dealer? Last night one player was not happy because the dealer smelt of spicy food and he found it difficult to sit next to him. Is it cause for complaint? Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: TightEnd on October 01, 2007, 02:56:24 PM 1. Just tell me straight, no need to hint on here!
2. No its not, I know who you meant last night but its not a cause for complaint Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: Dingdell on October 01, 2007, 02:58:21 PM 1. Last night one player was not happy because the dealer smelt of spicy food and he found it difficult to sit next to him. Is it cause for complaint? Wow! Trace, I have a confession to make. I was playing the competition at Luton on Friday and someone at my table hummed. I don't mean a little bit whiffy, I mean proper reels of cotton, but it didn't matter too much, I went bust in the first level and moved to the cash game. Incredibly, the smell somehow followed me, how could that be? then the horrible truth dawned, it was me. AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I immediately went to the loo to investigate. I locked myself into a cubicle and sniffed every part of myself that it was possible to sniff without recruiting you as a helper. believe it or not, I had one smelly foot. I never ever have smelly feet, I could wear the same socks for a week and you could pack your lunch in them, I still can't understand it. What makes it even more baffling is that the left one was it's usual fragrant self, it was just the right one that smelled like a burp from Satan's bottom. What can I say except sorry to all concerned, Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: TightEnd on October 01, 2007, 03:07:28 PM how to put this, its a cultural thing though isn't it? An Asian gentleman dealer obviously had strong spicy food earlier that day, I don't see a problem with it.

Post by: Snatiramas on October 01, 2007, 03:09:23 PM I remember once at a festival at the old ground, I was sat next to a young Geordie bloke who stank beyond belief cos he was living in his car all week.
I told him straight......... Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: Dingdell on October 01, 2007, 03:12:25 PM how to put this, its a cultural thing though isn't it? An Asian gentleman dealer obviously had strong spicy food earlier that day, I don't see a problem with it. Exactly - but does culture mean its ok to smell unpleasant to others? If I eat garlic i try my best to ensure it doesn't offend anyone else, and last night I chewed gum. But had anyone near to me said "Tracey you stink of garlic I" wouldn't have been surprised and would have apologised. No offence taken - I know I had eaten something that could make me wiff a bit but had done my best to supress it and not eaten too much of it. If the smell is 'cultural' why does that make it ok? Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: TightEnd on October 01, 2007, 03:16:26 PM because I do not relate it to lack of hygeine or even something the person will be aware of.
Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: Dingdell on October 01, 2007, 03:21:25 PM because I do not relate it to lack of hygeine or even something the person will be aware of. Why wouldn't someone be aware that a particular food makes them smell? if you work with the public you have a responsibility to be as acceptable as possible within that environment. I work with people and their smells all day - all i do is talk about what makes us smell every single day - and every single one of my clients is aware what foods make them wiff either orally, from the bottom or through their skin. I dont need to tell them that - they already know. This discussion could come perilously close to looking like a racist one and its really not meant to be. My point is whoever I spend time with - whether personally or professionally I expect and hope that they will be clean and inoffensive and I would expect that they would like the same from me. I shower at least once a day sometimes twice - especially on hot date nights... So let me rephrase the question - is it ok to say anything if a person is smelling offensively - whether it be from hygeine or foods they have eaten? There is a difference between smelling when you get their and having general disregard for others and smelling as the day goes on.....so i dont think it's a problem! To be honest I carry antibacterial wipes - but i am a bit Howard Hughes about germs because of my job and if I'm eating in the card room I dont want to eat with my hands having handled all those dirty poker chips... I work with germs all day so I am a bit over informed..........guess it makes me more paranoid. There are more germs in a persons mouth than in the bottom - think about that next time you go in for the good night kiss! Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: Geo the Sarge on October 01, 2007, 04:55:11 PM you collect aeroplanes? got enough hangars? Link to "Spruce Goose?" Anyway, Yes Tracey, I would like to be told. Complaining at the time might rock the boat a wee bit, think it best brought to the attention of management to have a quiet word with the staff member, after all it's not a personal hygiene thing but the guy probably doesn't know that the after-smell from his meal upsets some people and if brought to their attention would more than likely take steps to rectify. If it's really bad hygiene, I would be likely to complain. Geo Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ I always have used a paper towel to exit loo's or loo tissue if no paper towel there....no point in washing hands then touching possible infected areas. Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: The_duke on October 01, 2007, 07:08:03 PM I would absolutley want to be told if I had an odour problem, sometimes over the course of the day we can increase humness and not notice.
However I have a point about "hygiene" I seem to remember reading somewhere that there has been a huge increase in the numbers of children with asthma and allergies worldwide, particularly in developed countries. I would go out on a limb and suggest that the rise in allergies might be due to higher standards of cleanliness; providing young children with less exposure to germs. This will give children's still-developing immune systems less practice in fighting off intruders. I believe this was called "the hygiene hypothesis". This does not however excuse people not washing their hands after toilet time or taking showers often and having an acceptable level of 'presentability'. Sorry it was off the point really but when I grew up it wasn't dirty but probably less 'scrubbed' than todays obsession with cleanliness and seriously I don't ever suffer colds etc.... Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: kinboshi on October 01, 2007, 08:21:41 PM I wash my hands at least twice a week.
Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: suzanne on October 02, 2007, 04:27:36 AM One of the funniest moments ever in a poker game.
After playing in a live MTT and getting knocked out fairly early, I hit the bar and the STT tables along with a few other blondes who were there. As the drinks flowed so did the banter and we were having a great laugh. A bloke sat at the table was munching away at his toasted sandwich watching what was going on but not saying much. He was sat next to a female blonde who we all know and love and she said to him "is that a tuna sandwich you are eating?" He said "yes it is" she then said "thank god for that coz you smell like you just went down on a dirty women" ;gobsmacked; I swear I could not see my cards for the tears streaming down my face with laughter. I bet he will think twice before ordering a toasted tuna sandwich at a poker table again rotflmfao rotflmfao rotflmfao Title: Re: When it gets a bit smelly................ Post by: Snatiramas on October 02, 2007, 09:01:53 AM It just wasn't to be............I terrorised my first table with a wall of silence. Quite unsure how to deal with it they donked off a few chips in my direction. We get to level five and I am dieing from boredom as we get down to the last 14 players. At this point I weakened. It was just too tedious. You are at the poker table as you are in life. In life I am a loud boisterous salesman with a sense of humour (however warped). At the table I am going to be the same.
