when you take the laptop to a wireless area, for example the airport. do you have to change the settings on the computer to be able use that  service?

Do you not normally have it wireless, if not then u need to enable the wireless connection on some.

Apart from that i have no idea.

the lappy (if wireless is enabled) will show all available networks -- just click connect on the one u want (it might not be free) and away u go

When you connect to a network remember to open a browser since you will have to pay for the service (Usually with a credit card).

True, although it is becoming more prevalant for Airports to provide free Wi-Fi...Las Vegas McCarran for instance.

Also, some Airline Lounges (not the public ones) offer free Wi-Fi.

Just check a few Airport Sites (BAA in the UK) or Airline Sites.
