Title: What % says thanks?
Post by: DaveShoelace on October 11, 2007, 04:57:37 PM
Hi all,

When I started playing many years ago I was as s*&% as the next man, just plain gambling like any other casino activity. Then my best friend at work took me to one side and taught me how to play properly. He was only a low limit cash player but had a very good, textbook style and he taught me all the fundamentals. From that I spent the next two years improving and talking poker with him at work.

He turned me into a winning player and slowly but surely I got better and better. Last year not only did I leave my 9-5 job to play poker but I was lucky enough to discover a love for writing (about poker) and I now write for WPT and Pokernews as well. More recently I am about to start my own poker 'business' (Its a bit hush hush at the moment) as a little side project. Cant say what it is right now, but Alan Sugar has nothing to worry about.

Im currently sat at home just finishing a very good Omaha session and have just had one of my best months at the table ever. Tommorow I'm off to Australia to play in the Pokernews cup. I feel very very lucky and think its about time to thank my friend, as I think I would have none of this without him.

Sooooooooo, Im going to give him a share in my upcoming business venture, he gets a percentage of the profits (if any) and doesnt have to do a thing.

But I dont know what % to give him. I think between 5-10% is generous. Is that too much/too little?

Or should I just buy him a crate of stella?

cheers

Bazza

what, you're going to sell good electrical equipment?..Your stuff will actually work?

Best of luck to you with your venture..but if you're comparing 5-10% of your business with a crate of the shittiest lager ever made..I dunno. ;)

As a thank you gesture I would personally go for 3%

2-3% sounds fair to me

or a crate of a decent german beer which ever is the lessor but would be more apreaciated

10%. Minimum.

I agree...10% is a good thank you..2-3% doesn't say thank you..it says "I thought I had to"

A 2-5% is more than generous, and will be much appreciated by him I'd expect.  But you know what his help was worth to you, so maybe you feel he deserves more?

Was going to say 'nice gesture', but it's more than that isn't it?  :)up

Totally agree with Tikay and Boldie, but 5% minimum.

Probably better not to bother than give 2%.

You could always give him more but get  him to do something towards the project too.

8-10% would be a nice amount.

if the buisness is a mickey mouce job then 10% would be fine

but if you put alot of work and money into it and need to sell a share to raise capital 2% could be a healthly handout

lol :D

Sure if the company ends up worth millions then 2% is massive, but even giving 10% away, he's still keeping a most of it.  The guy introduced Dave to poker and look where Dave is now.  I'm sure he doesn't expect a penny, but I think a gift should be a generous one considering the amount Dave has taken from poker in general.   Even nicer would be a proper gift to remember - buy in to the WSOP, EPT etc but perhaps that's a bit too expensive :D  It would be nice though :D

I think 10% is very nice for the first 3 years then 2-5% as a maximum there after.

How much do you need to thank  someone. Who knows if he did not introduce you to
Poker you may have done something else and be mega rich. This dude may even of held you back
teaching you poker.

If fact give him nothing no commitments no % surprise him when you come good and if
you still feel the same way fine

Good Luck

Regards

M

It looks like 5% it is then. Thanks guys, I was scared I was being a tightarse.

This is of course assuming it makes money, I could end up bankrupting the poor sod.
