Title: Re: The Politics show. Post by: The Camel on October 14, 2007, 03:47:49 PM Near where we live there is a charity run hostel for young kids (16-19) just freed from detention. They provide them a job, a place to live and various skills training. Many of these kids would be out on the streets without this hostel to go to. The staff are caring, compassionate and responsible. All in all it's an excellent and worthwhile scheme.
Yet, when they were going for planning permissiona few years ago the local population objected in huge numbers. Very few would argue with the principle of the place.. they just didn't want it situated close to them. This "Not in my back yard" stance is one of the most unappealing national characteristic about the British.. so many people have liberal and caring attitudes when told about difficult situations.. yet if a solution impinges on their life in any way... those attitudes suddenly change. Good luck with your fight Tom. |
