Title: O/T Bird Flu Post by: AwesomeAli on October 21, 2005, 10:08:54 PM Within the last hour it;s been confirmed that a parrot that died in quarantine in the UK had bird flu.
Are we all doomed? Who's gonna have the injection the government will insist we all have? Ali Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: Heid on October 21, 2005, 10:11:01 PM I doubt the injection will do any good - but if it hits London, you won't get me on the Tube going to work!
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: tikay on October 21, 2005, 10:15:55 PM That's awful news.

Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: AwesomeAli on October 21, 2005, 10:36:31 PM Lets get some perspective. It died in quarantine... therefore the system works... bird flu has not officially reached the UK yet..... This is true, but..... It came in on a plane so it had to be loaded and unloaded and, therefore, came in contact with people. All the people that came in contact with the bird have been vaccinated/treated. What about the people on the plane?? Is the air the same in the hold as it is in the different classes above? Maybe I am just paranoid (yes, I am ::)) but the UK is not 100% uninfected IMO Ali Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: Rod Paradise on October 21, 2005, 10:38:27 PM Remember how many were supposed to die from CJD? THousands - dead so far? Less than 100 AFAICR.
I'm more worried about getting run down or someone cracking my Aces!!! Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: suzanne on October 21, 2005, 10:41:56 PM Im more worried about the goverment 'insisting' that everyone be vaccinated. I have stood and am still standing up to the medical profession with regards to vaccinations and believe me they are relentless in trying to wear you down.

My two youngest kids are both autistic and in my personal opinion it was down to the MMR. My son had his menengitis jab at 4 and was EXTREMELY ill and so I refused to let my daughter be vaccinated. I was made to feel like an unfit mother for this choice. Now I read that there will be a mass vaccination for bird flu, presumable the old and children will be first. I for one will not be having my kids vaccinated and I am sure I will have a battle on my hands.
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: Nem on October 21, 2005, 11:32:30 PM I hope it wasn't this Parrot (http://www.gagreport.com/funny_videos_clever_parrot.htm) that died from Bird flu

Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: byronkincaid on October 21, 2005, 11:49:06 PM I'm truely sorry to hear that suzanne. It was the scariest week of my life watching a programme about it on TV and then taking my daughter to have the MMR jab a few days later. I looked into having the jabs done separately but it seems as though the government has stopped one of the vaccines coming into the country to put a stop to it. Had a big arguement with the nurse and eventually signed the form to say I agreed to let them do it. Horrible day.
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: tikay on October 21, 2005, 11:52:21 PM Ant - nope, I've not been out all week - but I'm ACHING for a game now. I missed the Blue Square comp by 5 mins, pah! May play a llittle online later, if we can get a gang together. Suzanne - stick to your guns. They can't put you in jail for protecting your kids. Got two autistuic kids? Wow, that's a handful at times, I bet, but I know quite a few children with autism - they all have one common trait - they're increrdibly loving, & loveable. Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: tikay on October 22, 2005, 01:10:59 AM Truth? I feel worse than a worse thing, splitting headache all week, runny nose, varicose veins playing up, the lot.
But tomorrow I'll be GREAT. Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: Heid on October 22, 2005, 01:14:13 AM I'm not that bad, but then I didn't have man flu :)
You poor thing! No DayNurse/NightNurse/Strepsils/Anadin - Got some brandy? Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: Robert HM on October 22, 2005, 01:19:31 AM Just a note for suzanne, I know where you're coming from a little. I have two boys, they live with their mother, the oldest, Alex 14 passed all his entrance exams we put him into and is doing great at school, and boy doesn't he remind us. William, 9, will never follow in his footsteps, autism, epilepsy and language difficulties put paid to that but he is the cutest loveable kid you could come across, and cheeky with it. Wouldn't swap 'em for the world.
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: tikay on October 22, 2005, 01:26:58 AM But William can still be happy - THATS what matters.

Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: -bw- on October 22, 2005, 01:31:32 AM Just remember all kids have something special about them
I have two daughters Jessica is always top of the class and has to win in all sports Daisy is not top of the class and is a Dolly Day Dream with two left feet but she has such a talent for art and the arts that I am equally proud will she follow in Jessica's footsteps? No Would I want her to? No I love them both the same and am equally proud Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: AwesomeAli on October 22, 2005, 01:39:34 AM Is autsim what Dustin Hoffman had in Rainman? Yes Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: Robert HM on October 22, 2005, 01:42:05 AM Yes, but the autism spectrum is huge and many ways of showing, William's main "thing" is obsession.
Yes tikay, often frustrated, often very happy, I'll try and get a pic up. Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: suzanne on October 22, 2005, 01:53:20 AM Awww you guys are GREAT im so pleased I found this forum...Thanks RFC (William) for that lovely post and yes snoopy Rainman was autistic. My boy who is now 10 is EXTREMELY intellegent, I can just see him as a geeky Univercity prof/researcher but he is a billy no mates who sees the worse in everything. My daughter is the real handful with language/learning difficulties she reads way beyond her years but doesnt understand what it means which is sad and boy has she got a temper. They are both lovely kids though... SO... bidding starts on ebay...GRAB YOURSELF A BARGAIN...only 99p for the pair with no reserve ;D
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: tikay on October 22, 2005, 02:03:31 AM Yes Robert, let's have a pic.
Here's my autism story. I was playing golf with a good friend 5 or 6 years back, he mentioned his lad was autistic. Well,, that got us off on the wrong foot, 'cos I THOUGHT he said ARTISTIC, & blabbered on about the merit of artists for 10 minutes, anyway, I get out of it somehow. I got to know the lad - he was, maybe, 18 or 20, lovely boy. Had an AMAZING memory, &, as Robert implied, possibly an obsession. He'd spend all day in hios bedroom, on the internet, learning & memorising stuff. He knew ALL the runners in every Epsom Derby since 1900! So when we went to little 2 & 3 day golfing trips to places like Skeggy, the lad, though not a golfer, would come with us. We had nightly quizzes, & we could not let him enter the quizzes as a contestent, as he'd win them evey time, so he used to set the questionss. He had an awesome mind, & an incredible memory. But he lacked - totally - social skills, &, to a degree, co-ordination of his limbs. You had to be SO careful what you said to him. In the bar at the golf club, if you said "go & get me a drink David (name changed) he'd trot off to the bar, walk BEHIND the bar, serve himself, & bring the drink back. This caused a ruction one night when the steward had a go at him, he simply said "but Tony said get me a drink"....... And on his way to & from the bar, he walked in a STRAIGHT LINE, no matter what lie betwen him & the bar. Drinks, chairs, tables, people, anything in his way he simply walked through. Carnage..... If you berated him about this, he simply could not grasp what the problem was. The sad end to the tale is that his Father is well into his 60's, & worries constantly about the lad being looked after, once Dad passes on. The lad can't work, & because he's always been looked afer by Mum & Dad, he knows no other life. I gather the plan is to put him into some sort of protected environment, some sort of, I hate the word, but "home". There are more heroes out there than one would ever dream. The kids, & the Mums & Dads. And STILL peeps insist on telling me their poker bad beats...... Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: suzanne on October 22, 2005, 02:12:46 AM That sums it up perfectly tikey x
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: suzanne on October 22, 2005, 02:18:06 AM You got my boy down to a tee (excuse the golf pun), you tell him to go a bit faster and he runs, say slow down and he walks at snails pace. A typical example is one morning he put his shoes on wrong and i said to him your shoes are on the wrong feet, he bursts out crying and says these are the only feet I have got. You try explaining that one!!
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: RFC on October 22, 2005, 02:21:04 AM Robert you know William will be the best he can be
With a name like William he has to be the best 8) it can only be worse if he turns out like another William you have met and you wouldn't wish that on anyone Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: tikay on October 22, 2005, 02:24:29 AM I never know whether to laugh or cry when I see or hear these stories of autistic kids.
Young David was SO polite - it was always "yes please", "no thank you" he addressed strangers as Sir or Madam. One day he was marching along & accidentally knocked an old lady clean off her feet. It never OCCURRED to him to see if she was OK, say sorry, he just walked on, oblivious. His Father had a theory that autism was caused by the teeny weeniest little thing being amiss somewhere, it was almost like Dad was looking for a missing key, & he hoped one day to find it, & the kid would be fine. I mean, the lad WAS awesomely bright, he spoke perfectly normally, perfrct in every respect it seemed. But he just took everything completely literally. God moves in mysterious ways, they say. Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: tikay on October 22, 2005, 02:25:29 AM How old your boy Suzanne?

Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: suzanne on October 22, 2005, 02:58:27 AM Ooops i have been found out >:D
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: Ginger on October 22, 2005, 03:57:46 AM Suzanne, If your clash with the NHS ( going back to the MMR vaccine here) has been anything like mine, I totally understand where you are coming from. My 2 daughters have allergies that prohibit them from having the vaccine, and if they were to have it there would be a considerable risk to their health. Now, has the NHS taken this on board when sending out reminders for them to have it?? LOL of course not, I have received in the past phone calls from the doctors and the children's ward on a weekly basis telling me that I am letting the girls down by NOT letting them have it!!! It's in there medical records that they can't have it for goodness sake. Grrrrrrrr.
Now, maybe others view it differently, but when a specialist tells me that the ONLY way that they could possibly have it ( apart from having the single vaccines, and only having 2 of the 3, which you can't have in the UK anyway) is to be admitted to hospital and when they give the injection they will have adrenalin on standby just in case their hearts stop. That to me says NO DAMN WAY!!!! This has been going on for years since Jennifer was a toddler, she is now 12, Caitlin is only 4 so it looks like it could be going on for a while yet too. So I hope that I now don't have to go through all this with the new "risk", or at least if it is something that they must have a vaccination for( they also both have Asthma, and obviously low immune systems from many chest infections) that it is created in a way that they will be able to take it. If not I have to do what I have had to done with the MMR, rely on as many other people getting vaccinated as possible, to reduce the risk for my own children. Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: Ironside on October 22, 2005, 04:01:49 AM can i just ask if anyone could show me the way to any blonde thread that tikay hasnt moved off the topic of the orginal thread its a blonde thing it just happens as sure as reddog being first in the queue of a buffet

Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: suzanne on October 22, 2005, 06:05:08 AM OMG ginger (((big hugs)) someone out there that knows what im going through. I too have searched the internet, books etc and i too have come to the conclusion that my kids have low immune system. To you peeps out there that dont know what it means...if there is a 24hr virus going around..it will hit my kids twice as hard and take three times longer for them to get over. A simple jab to most kids.... could be life threatening to mine. Why is it so unbelievable?? You have nut allergies..gluten..i could go on and on. The point i want to make is that this...I DONT WANT MY KIDS INJECTED WITH ANYMORE CHEMICALS. My grief is with the docs/nurses/midwifes that put pressure on you to do the right thing
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: tikay on October 22, 2005, 09:44:57 AM Wish I could respond Suzanne, & Ginger. But I'm in trouble with Iron for ruining this thread. Look after them kids. I'll go now. :tikay:
Title: Re: O/T Bird Flu Post by: Heid on October 22, 2005, 10:32:02 AM When I was little I had the polio vaccince, and it did something a bit strange to me, as apparently my legs stopped working for a while - all is OK now, but my mum stopped me from having any of the other jabs from then on - upside was that I didn't get any more strange reactions, and I didn't have any more problems. Downside was that I caught whooping cough (which I have to say was horrible). But I can't imagine what my life would have been like if my mum didn't put her foot down about the other stuff. I think she got a very hard time from the docs even back then.
I don't know what to say to you mums apart from protect your kids and do the best for them, you don't have to do anything you don't want or think is for the best. Heid xx |
