Title: Two hours of my life watching a turkey
Post by: TightEnd on October 18, 2007, 11:14:04 AM
It sounded promising with a starry cast: Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, William Hurt.

The film was "Mr Brooks" and the cinema last night was packed. I did wonder why the showing times only had this on once during each day, compared to 4 times for most of the blockbusters. Now I know why.

What we viewed was the most ludicrous tosh that started off with a little credibility but by the end had us wondering how on earth the screenplay had made it to the screen.

Kevin Costner plays Mr Brooks -- by day a dull businessman, by night a serial killer. In this role he is so wooden and unbelievable as a man with hidden depravities that it ruins any chance the film has. Mr. Brooks has an accomplice in his crimes. His name is Marshall, and William Hurt plays him. Marshall is Earl's alter ego, the voice that goads him into action. Hurt is a good actor and in this he plays the role with a sort of studied disdain that leaves the audience in no doubt that he must have decided to sack his agent for sending him this script.

After an unexplained two year break from his killing escapades, Brooks gets back into it with a couple he kills, with no explanation as to why this couple.  Funnily enough the murder is witnessed by the photographer in the apartment across the road who snaps the act, as of course the curtains are open. The audience is expected to believe that this individual is so intrigued by the murder that instead of going to the police he blackmails the murderer -- not for money but for the chance to stand and watch during his next crime. Absolute poppycock

Meanwhile Brooks is attending AA meetings in an attempt to rid himself of his addiction to murder. Yeah right.

If this isn't bad enough we are lumbered with terrible subplots involving Brook's teenage daughter (and we are expected to believe that serial killer tendencies are hereditary) and the cop on the case, played by Demi Moore, with an aplomb that deserved better than being saddled with an hackneyed back story as an heiress with a fortune-hunting husband. Because of course every heiress multi-millionaire is a murder cop in surburbia.

As the credits ran we saw that one of the producers was Mr Costner himself. That probably explains a lot.

It wins my award for turkey of the year, in the face of much competition.

Save yourself a couple of hours, and see something else instead.

At the very least you will save yourself £5 for two "small" diet cokes (small in the sense that Africa is a small continent)!

Must admit I too struggled on quite how the connection was made between "promising" and Kevin Costner!   ;hide;

Surely though Tighty, all your recent experiences at the Walkers Stadium must have held you in good stead for getting all the way through this film!!   ;sleep;    ;surrender;

As i said way back i thought it was superb, a real return to form for costner.
Everyone i know that has seen it has agreed though someone told me it was reworked for the English audience though i wouldn't know.

Just looked up some reviews and they are all very favourable, maybe just not your type of film tighty, personally i won't watch horrors or anything that has won multiple oscars post OFOTCN.

Kevin Costner and Demi Moore, of course it's a piss poor movie...probably only enjoyed by people who thought that "Fuck you for a million bucks" movie was good and who though "Dances on the prairie while getting outperformed by the wolves" was actually the best movie of the year and deserved the Oscar.

You were right Tighty.

The Academy thought so too, awarding it the the best movie Oscar, ahead of Goodfellas...
