Title: Docking Dogs' Tails Post by: Rod Paradise on October 26, 2007, 02:37:29 PM I know this is banned totally in Scotland & with only a few exceptions in England/Wales.
My parents have just bought a Border Terrier/Patterdale Terrier cross, from a guy who breeds them as working dogs - problem is the tail's been docked. Anyone know the potential penalty for owning a docked dog if you didn't dock it (and probably wouldn't have had it done as the pup won't be hunted). Don't worry about it. 1: You didn't dock it, it was done when you bought it. 2: For all you (or anyone else) knows, it may have been docked because of disease or injury. For the record. If a dog is going to be used to hunt thick cover, i.e. blackthorn/bramble etc, a long wagging tail will soon be ripped to shreds. It is much kinder to dock it. Title: Re: Docking Dogs' Tails Post by: kinboshi on October 27, 2007, 03:48:32 PM I agree with what you're saying Tom, but more often than not, docking is done for aesthetic purposes rather than any practical reason.
How many boxer dogs that you see day to day are used for hunting purposes? How many boxer dogs that you see day to day are used for hunting purposes? I saw a spaniel in her 1st season out working the other day with a non-docked tail. Poor thing got strung up on a barbed wire fence and the yelping she made had us all saying what a ridiculous law this is. I agree with you that most docking is for (sadly) aesthetic purposes kinboshi, but i doubt a blanket law is the answer. How many boxer dogs that you see day to day are used for hunting purposes? Boxers weren't working dogs AFAIK - they were fighters - there's even less reason for docking them now. Cheers Tom, that's pretty much the feedback my Dad got from the vets as well. Title: Re: Docking Dogs' Tails Post by: snoopy1239 on October 29, 2007, 12:33:17 PM What does 'docking' mean?

Be glad you're not a male lamb - they remove the tail & testicles by rubber-banding them - fitting a strong tight rubberband around the base & letting the 'unwanted' appendage(s) wither and fall off.
