St. Pancras, after whom this district is named, was a young Phrygian nobleman who suffered martyrdom at Rome under the Emperor Diocletian for his adherence to the Christian faith; he became a favourite saint in England.

A liitle ancient history for you Tikay

As lately as the year 1745, there were only two or three houses near the church, and twenty years later the population of the parish was under six hundred. At the first census taken in the present century it had risen to more than 35,000, and in 1861 it stood at very little under 200,000. There has, however, been a decrease since that time on account of the extensive clearances made for the terminus of the Midland Railway, of which we shall speak presently.

More good stuff

He remembers it well.  I think he played HU against him in the Colosseum (an early EPT event).

In the following year the same railway company obtained further powers from the Legislature (who offered little or no opposition) to take a corner of the St. Pancras Churchyard for part of their main line, ostensibly for the purpose of erecting a pier for the viaduct which crosses the entire yard, and which, from being constructed on arches, would be the means of allowing trains to be constantly flying past the very windows of the church, and at the same time to be rumbling over the tombs of the hallowed dead.

Rumbling over the tombs of the hallowed dead..........don't be surprised if you see a ghost or two

Around that time, London as we know it hadn't got that far north - Oxford Street was as far as it had got. Tottenham Court Road had farms either side of it.

Isn't this thread in the wrong place - shouldn't it be in The Rail?

Anyway, they had a test day at St Pancras yesterday and one blogger was there.

This is quite amazing:

With this new terminal it would quicker for me to get to Paris than it does to drive to Brighton!
