Ok - so me and Andrew have had a few little skirmishes, he is to my right, me smiling at him after having raised or bet, him folding, so far so good. Then one hand where his kicker plays against me by one point and I'm down to just under half my starting stack of 10,000.

The following hand I'm not sure what happened.

Blinds 150, 300.
Me third to act  Js 9c, just call. Fold all the way to Andrew in BB who checks.  Flop  Jd  3c  5h.

Andrew checks, I bet 500, I have approx 3500 left. Andrew reraises another 2000 (he has around 12000 at this point I think).

I have the top pair but fairly poor kicker, he didn't raise me from the BB so I have to assume he doesn't have a big pair. I think I either have to fold or go all in.

What should I have done?

With 5k @ 150/300 im never limping J9 3rd to act, its raise or fold preflop. On the flop, i pass here, ur beat more times than ur winning.

Am I playing to weak - raise with J 9 in 3rd position?

By my reckoning you have c.3800 at the start of the hand so its never a call preflop for me.  I personally am folding preflop, and again in your situation on the flop.

I think you have to have conficence in you post flop game to raise with J9 3rd to act, limp is the worst thing to do here, raise or chuck them...

I agree - I am weak post flop all the time. I have a big hole in my game strength wise.

I folded and showed my jack - he showed his jack too.

at the apat events at teh 150/300 level i wouldnt be limping with anything preflop espically from early mod postion

once you hit your jack you got to play the hand but the mistake was playing J9

you still had time to wait for a better hand or a place to steal

Eh, if you NEVER play J9 from early or midposition and a stack of 17BBs you are doing the right thing. It's not a question of how well you play postflop - you could be a longterm winner at 25 / 50 online and be unable to show a profit playing J9 in this specific situation.

Once you get below 20BBs you need to significantly tighten the range of hands you openraise pots with as it is becoming more and more incorrect to raise preflop and fold; and at the same time you need to significantly widen the range of hands you are 3 bet shoving with.

I have to say, I played a few APAT events myself last season and was shocked at much of the fundamentally incorrect weak tight play I saw from people - particularly when they were shortstacked. To the OP - I do strongly suggest buying HOH2 for a decent discussion of the variations and limitations imposed upon you as your stack dwindles. HOH has become fairly outdated in many respects it must be said - but it definitely has a lot of value in terms of getting people to think in the "right" way about tournaments.

Hi tracey tracey, seat 1 from yesterday here. Can't recal that particular hand but would be interested in hearing your views on 1 or 2 of your post flop plays/folds against me. I don't think I've ever played that many hands in one day!!

If you can remember the hand's I'll do my best..

I was thinking about the times where I showed 1 card of your choosing.
I raised preflop, you called. flop was K Q x.
I bet or reraised your bet (can't remember which) you had a big think then folded.

Small pocket pair - sixes I think.
