Title: 888.com 2nd semi final
Post by: 77dave on November 13, 2007, 05:48:12 AM
just finished watching this and wanted opinions on what happened during this 7 handed sng where top 2 made the final

young danish kid in pot very nervous first live comp limp passes to a raise the BB john hewston now moves allin  BB has JJ
young Danish kid tells the BB he should call   and he does   Hewston is at it with K9 hits the King and doubles through

I agree this is out of order    Andy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469) Black (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469) and John Hewston call a ruling and the TD Marty (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=978) Wilson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=978) gives a warning to the player and tells him he cant speak in that way.

A few hands later Hewston fimbles through his chips and goes to raise. Young Danish kid says why dont you make it 12k to play i can call that.
After the hand Hewston calls another ruling and Marty now again agrees and gives the dane his final warning

On Hewstons BB the Dane limps  Andy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469) Black (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469) pushes in and Hewston has a needless dwell up  while he is dwelling the Dane says "no" and passes his hand. I dont think he realised Hewston was still in the pot,

Andy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469) Black (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469) loses it and calls Marty over again and say Marty he did it again im not going to take this anymore you need to take action
Marty pulls the young Dane off of the table and gives him a 20 min penalty

6 handed with the blinds at 5k-10k and an ave stack of 115k  is this the right penalty for such a crime

Im all for clamping down on speechplay in multiway pots if it affects the 3rd player in the pot but has the Dane actually done much wrong  what penalty would you hand out if any to the player

Dave, have you been on the booze? Found some of that hard to follow. Can you clarify the above quote?

the Dane limp in with  Jc Th  all pass around to Andy Black in the SB who moves in with  Ac Tc

Hewston know has a dwell up from the BB with  Qd 7c and has no intention of calling

The Dane now says "No" and goes to pass his cards  i think not realising that Hewston was still in the pot

ruling is called and 20 min penalty given out

If it were accidental it is possibly a little harsh, especially as it is unrelated to his previous crimes. However, if thems are the rules, I guess they have to abide by them, but it's very hard to know what the rules are anywhere these days.

whenever i see Andy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469) Black (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=469) on tv he always seems to be moaning about some minor rule infringement. he wants to try some meditation or something :)

I watched most of it and the Danish Kid was told to not say anything but he kept doing so. Unless your really stupid there is no excuse for his behavior and it seems Mad Marty agreed. I don't think the lad was a saint :(

I agree he wasnt a saint   I think the first thing he did was majorly out of order but the 2nd and 3rd offences wouldnt of got notice if Hewston and Black hadnt started crying.

To tell someone to make it 12k as a raise when its your big blind is know big deal

I guess thats kinda the question i was asking do you think the same would of happened if it was the other way around

would Marty give Andy Black or John Hewston a 20 min penalty for the same offences

hard to judge wether accidental or not,    but previous warnings were  vvv clear.

marty to be applauded for sticking to his guns imo.

Can be a bit nerve racking being on TV. I have sympathy for the kid. Should have been briefed properly before going on air maybe

Excluding the 1st offence do you think he did anything wrong

Personally no. I think they were taking advantage of their status.

Who qualified for the final anyway?

Must admit I found Marty and his staff excellent during my time at Maidstone. Everything was done very professionally. With regards the Norwegian, totally out of order with the first comment, talking during the pot for the second offence( so what) having listened to Jamie Gold during WSOP 2006, he said absolutely nothing wrong. Third offence could have been waived, but putting all three together and the bleatings of Texas and the Mad Monk, who I must say treats everyone at the table like school children with him being the teacher, I don't think Marty had any other option.

Matchtoom don't pander to any 'poker superstars' and would have treated JH & AB the same. However would JH & AB have taken the punishment with the same grace as young skandie luny?

To be fair he had been warned over & over,it was obviously down to nerves .
The big name players used their status (and experience).Simply it was experienced players taking advantage of the situation, you see that in every sport.
The best thing that could have happened though was the time penalty as he came back chilled out.
I don't think marty would have made the same decision if it was the other way round but I don't think that the Danish Lad was ever going to make the same arguement. Experience counts.

Marty apparently warned the kid that unless he behaved, he'd tell them one of his (3) stories. The frozen bird, the golf-ball, or his Brother's Diary. The last is the one they all fear, it's 4 hours, & so amounts to elimination from the Comp.

Just a few points.

Tomas is a nice lad but the penalty he got was fully deserved.Marty did his best for the kid ,gave him both warnings and advice but the kid just couldn't help himself.A lot of TDs wouldn't have bothered. In the post match interview and in the hotel for the days between the semi and the final the kid had no complaints and as someone else has pointed out the penalty did him a world of good both in the semi and  in his subsequent appearance in the final.

As regards the allegation that others would have been treated differently I have to agree. If any of the pros had committed the first offence  for which Tomas received a warning (ie advising the German to call Hewston's all in raise) they would have quite rightly been penalised immediately.

The Matchroom guys did a great job of calming Tomas down during his penalty .It worked.

The pros might have emerged with more credit if instead of giving unnecessary advice  and shouting when the dealer was trying to explain what she had heard to the  td .Perhaps it might have been a little nicer if they had given the kid a little friendly advice.

I wasn't too impressed with the sudden injection of the  speed into the game when the Dane was serving his sentence.Perhaps penalties should be   imposed in terms of hands rather than time.

This seems a very sensible idea - especially when levels are measured by number of hands, as they seem to be on several of these TV tourneys.

Padraig tells it as he, & many of us, see it - the Pros did not exactly cover themselves with glory by the way they handled themselves here.

A great Maiden Post on blonde by the legend that is Padraig Parkinson.

Post more, Padraig!

Efforts are under way in various quarters, but you'd need to make the various providers of live poker in the UK actually speak to each other...

Its probably about as likely as having a standard rule book for 8 ball pool!
