Title: "Poker is not a sport"
Post by: Legionnaire on November 22, 2007, 11:39:25 AM
My local newspaper has all kinds of results in its 'sports' section on a Saturday night; Angling, Cribbage, Dominoes to name but a few. When i enquired about including our Card Room results the Sport Editor refused stating "poker is not a sport!"
Does anybodies local paper include the results from their card room on a regular basis?

Nope

I would also think all those Anonymouses we get on the results would prefer them kept out too, before the CSA spots them!

Are you agreeing with the editor; Poker results have no place in the sports section of a newspaper? or are you just saying they wouldn't make good copy?

I think a good "rub down" section in the local paper would increase readership

Who would want to read a list of results from the local cardroom?

Even the people who play in a comp. typically leave as soon as they exit, and have little interest in who wins it.

(BTW, I don't think Poker is a sport).

I want to put the results in to attract more people to the room; people interested in poker would read the results! Just as i assume the cribbage fraternity can't wait for there Saturday results service.

Poker should be in the Olympics

Perhaps then local newspapers would listen

I think newspapers could/should run poker hand puzzles (like they do with chess, bridge, etc.).  I think that would be far more interesting to readers than results of tournaments.

I also don't think that poker can be considered a 'sport' - but neither are dominoes, cribbage, and the like.

And call it something like 'Hand Analysis'?

I guess that wouldn't be too controversial...................

How many people regularly look at the results service in the Live Poker section of Blonde? (And just looking for your own nane doesn't count!!).

I gotta be honest - just looked at this for the first time (as a result of this thread), and only to check that there was really some results on it.

There's one on the back of The Times 2 everyday, although I think it's more of a full tilt ad.

Copied from wiki

Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors.

I seem to remember that poker is for some reason officially recognised as a sport in Russia. But (not for the first time) the Russians are clearly wrong.

Bet you wouldn't dare repeat that statement when Mr Putin is standing next to you, eh? :)

I agree with whoever* said, "I don't consider anything I can do sitting down, with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other, to be a sport."

*If no one else claims it within 28 days, I'm keeping it for myself! :)

Of the main site sections, results service is the most viewed

Not to be confused with forum boards, of which Live Poker is one

I think this section could be really improved if you used a database rather than static webpages. You could then view the results in different ways. eg. by player.

Just a thought!

ok playing live poker in this country would soon get you arrested if you had a fag and a pint in your hands

unless of course it was outdoor

But if Cribbage is included then there is no argument for not having poker reported as well. Although I am guessing that really their response meant that they can't be bothered. I used to be in a Cribbage team and think the paper saw printing the results as a hassle and whenever they ballsed it up they couldn't care less at the emotional turmoil caused to players seeing incorrect stores.

Can anyone remember any coverage in the Papers prior to either the WSOP or the WSOPE ???

Nope ...neither can I...sadly poker is viewed as some activity for reprobates..

Mind you my local free rag had a nice piece on a mate of mine  who won a seat at the main event on Betfred

yes the local rags were full of stories about people going to win 12mill...

the bigger newspapers of course don't run a story like that as there is no point. newpaper space is expensive and there isn't enough interest to justify running an article. in the same way as the sun doesn't report on bridge

It's why I rarely get to see MP hands - I'm at the bar one round and having a ciggie the next.
