Post by: elliam on November 30, 2007, 07:53:16 PM I have an Acer laptop and tonight i was playing poker and it froze so i removed the battery (ctrl, alt, del wasn't working) and left it for a few minutes and when i switched it back on it started up, the acer screen came on and then there was just darkness, windows won't start up at all now. Anyone got any ideas?

Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: elliam on November 30, 2007, 08:11:04 PM fan does seem to be overheating bcos it keeps cutting out.
lol kinboshi yes it is plugged in Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: Bongo on November 30, 2007, 08:13:44 PM The fan cuts out?
That could be causing it to overheat. I would leave it for a while (hour+) to cool down properly and then try it - see if it boots and if the fan cuts out. Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: elliam on November 30, 2007, 08:18:02 PM Thanks Bongo
i will give it an hour or so and try it again Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: ACE2M on November 30, 2007, 09:06:34 PM and get your hoover on the vents to suck out any dust.
Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: elliam on November 30, 2007, 09:44:27 PM just tried it again and the same thing keeps happening figures seeing as the warranty ran out last week.
Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: Bongo on November 30, 2007, 09:55:27 PM If you're in the UK that doesn't matter as you can claim that it is defective under the trade descriptions act or some such, as you would reasonably expect it to last longer than it has...

Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: ifm on November 30, 2007, 10:43:13 PM I dunno the startup screen is a list of ways to boot into windows so it has to be before, i didn't get the impression it was shuttin down just hanging on the black screen.
Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: ifm on November 30, 2007, 10:49:00 PM On the subject of busted windows i was given a lappy to use in poker comps.
To cut a long story short i ended up installing win 2000 on it but it on bootup it shows the 2000 splash screen then the screen jut turns off, it's as if it goes into sleep mode. Tried every boot option thru startup menu and bios and it does the same. Anyway i can access it from another lappy? I can get a crossover cable but i don't know if i'll do anything? Trouble is i only has a cd drive and it ignores the win disks Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: Bongo on November 30, 2007, 10:58:33 PM Crossover cable won't do much unless you're in windows.
Will it not boot from the CD drive at all? (presume you've checked bios) Made sure the CDs themselves aren't faulty? You could try a linux distribution that would boot from a USB stick. Didn't think i could, i have an ISO image of a win 98 bootdisk but no blank disks to put it on yet, this was to be my last attempt before using it as a doorstop. I'll check out linux. Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: Bongo on November 30, 2007, 11:19:45 PM I guess it would depend on how old the laptop is...
You can also run a linux live CD that will let you boot into linux without installing. I've never tried the usb booting myself, but the live CD works well. Ubuntu is pretty simple - http://www.ubuntu.com/ I'm thinking about switching my desktop to it, as it has many handy tools that I can't find for windows! Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: ifm on November 30, 2007, 11:50:04 PM Pretty sure usb only works when windows enables it because i know for a fact that usb devices won't work in safemode because it's minimal drivers only.
I'll deffo try linux, last time i used it was redhat back in the day! Fact i found interesting: windows 98 is 125mb's!!!! Title: Re: Laptop Helppppppp!!!! Post by: lazaroonie on December 01, 2007, 12:35:13 AM depends how new the mobo/bios is, mot modern stuff will give an option to boot from USB in the bios.
can you not just take the HD out and put it in a usb caddy ? |
