First of all i would like to say hello to every one who uses this forum.

I am looking for a good poker software tool to help me improve my game. does any one have any recommendations?

What games do you normally play - e.g. Tournies, Cash, Sit n Go's etc.., and at what levels?

cash tables mostly at low levels. nothing more than $1/$2.

At the moment I prefer Poker Office to track my games, it has a built in odds calculator which is good enough and provides a table overlay as standard. Downsides it doesn't work on Omaha or 7 Card Stud.

The other option is Poker Tracker which dies come in an Omaha flavour and has a number of pugins available, including an overlay.

I have tried many other tracking programs and none of them match up Poker Office or Poker Tracker. I don't really use odds calculators as I find them distracting and give me justification to make bad calls/folds when I have really good reads on players.

Smart Buddy is quite useful for tracking fish if you play on multiple sites.

i was thinking of getting poker tracker myself for omaha cash games and holdem tournaments,
ive read somewhere that these programs use up alot of memory on your computer,is this a bit of a problem and how do you get round it or nothing to worry about

Not sure whether you are talking RAM or harddisk, the impact on RAM is negligible on any modern computer (within 5 years), hand histories can take up quite a lot of space if you play millions of hands and use PT for data mining when you are not playing, but for normal use this wouldn't be a problem. If your hard disk is 60GB or so and you have not already filled it with MP3's or porn or whatever.
One impact of using this kind of software is on your CPU when it is processing its data, the more data you have the longer and more disruptive it becomes, so there is a small chance of you getting timed out on your hands if you are still playing while PT or PO is processing.

A bit rambley sorry, short of it is not really much of a problem, generally.

i use my laptop for poker ,18months old, 256 mb only 40gb, didnt think i would need much as i dont play games or anythng, son does have a habit of downloading mp3s to listen to when he plays though,, yes thats what i read something about hand histories taking up a lot of space, i assume i would have the option of being able not to store hand history,i use hand history when i am playing ,or download when i wish.i was wondering if poker tracker helps when you have no knowledge of a player giving you information on what type of player he is and at what levels he plays when he joins your table,or does the tracker only give you the stats of his game from when he joins your table,

I don't think you will have any problems with your set up, its not the most powerfull but it doesnt need to be. PO and PT both use hand history information to give you stats on who you are playing against (I think I am right in saying that they both extract that information and store it in its own database so you can delete your hand histories). Unless you are multitabling 16 at a time 8 hours a day then you wont run into any problems. Welcome to blonde Mikey,  Iv just done a big software review and basically it all boils down to 1 thing. Poker office is the best poker software on the market right now. Best of luck.

Interesting why do you say that Alex, did you also look into the new generation PT3 and Holdem manager?

PT3 was unavailable at time of testing. Holdem Mgr didnt make the cut. I give it to Office for ease of use, functionality, features and overall feel. Nice and clean, crisp, newbie freindly setup. Compare that to PT and it gets my vote for all new players. I still use PT, but thats mainly because i have gotten used to it over a long period of time and i want the invested time to pay damnnit!
