anybody got any experience of buying a domain name from somebody else who has already registered it? so frustrating.

It's like anything else - a domain name is worth exactly what someone else is prepared to pay for it, it has little 'actual' worth. You just have to negotiate and be prepared to walk away if he wants too much for it.

Ive sold some via Sedo, its worth having a look at there site for some ideas on pricing etc.
But like Andrew said its worth what someone will pay for it, a bit like a car number plate really.
When selling or buying trough sedo, someone makes you an offer and you can counter it, they have seven days to accept and basically keep bartering untill you get to a price oth parties agree.
Maybe get him to stick the domain with them and that saves a lot of hassle, obviously they take a fee though.

Are they willing to sell?  I've tried to buy domains in the past, and the owner has said "it's not for sale at any price."  This is obviously a blatant lie, as I'm sure they'd have sold it to me if I'd offered a million pounds.

On the other hand, some peope are happy to sell a domain for a few hundred quid (or even less) if they decide that they like you and don't want to screw you for loads.

I've emailed but had no replies yet, i tried so many things and most are just owned by companies who bulk buy, will let you know if i get any reply. my budget is tiny so there is no danger of me getting shafted.

So you are looking at lots of domain names?

By far the best way is to find an un-used domain and register your own for £5 or so.

I have christmasgift-shop.com for sale, yours for only... make me an offer :P

We have sold a few poker and gambling related domain names through one of our other sites Pokerdomainnames. You can see a list of what some sites can reach there but it's basically down to what someone is prepared to pay. A couple of simple things to know though. The .com is the only domain extension of any real value although you may wish to protect yourself by registering other extensions if your site has a strong brand and others may try and trade on that. Spelling something the wrong way doesn't work. Keep the domain simple so that it is easily rememberable and easy to say and understand. Generic domains are the most expensive at resale.

Agree with most of that, though obviously highly generic .co.uk names have a lot of value too. e.g. I know of a certain UK poker domain that has recieved offers of 7 figures. I also know of other gambling/lotto related names that have recieved similar offers... All with .co.uk extensions.

Bear in mind that if you are registering the name for main use in the UK market, then the .co.uk extension can actually be worth more than the .com counterpart. Still, if you can, always buy both versions of the name.

Finally, be very careful in buying a name that might already be someone elses trademark. e.g. Taito Corp of Japan recently sent me a cease and desist letter for spaceinvaders.com - meaning I had to give it away for free. What a stress and waste of money!

I'm currently in the process of trying to re-acquire a domain name for Mad Marty. It's an incredibly frustrating when the owner of the name doesn't reply to repeated emails. Especially when the name is of no use to you, and is someone elses Trademark.

The States seem to rate .net's quite highly too, although not in the same league as the co.uk's and com's.

Avoid the .info's, they've just been set up and have been jobbed out for $1.99 each, often cheaper just to get new business in.  Easy money for someone no doubt.
